I find it more sad that people think crime will be solved by removing the tools of that crime. After guns are removed and people start using knives they will be the first people to limit the size of knives people can buy. After that?

Crimes of passion may be prevented by minor gun control... but I'd venture to say that the recent publicized acts were all premeditated and legality of purchase would have had little (if no) affect on the outcome. This wasn't some guy that decided one morning to go out and "get him a human head."

How is high speed rail going to help commuters? By the time the train got up the 200+ MPH it's supposed to go you'd have passed by the station it was supposed to stop at.

High speed rail is for vast distance city to city traffic. It's not going to reduce local commutes and it might only help those people who have over an hour commute. Even then you'll probably spend more time getting to the station, waiting for the train, and getting a taxi from the station to your work. You may actually be spending more time trying to get to work.

From what I understand... if you ship your software and someone patents part of it... all you have to do is state your claim and it could cancel said patent:

    301. Citation of prior art and written statements
    (a) IN GENERAL — Any person at any time may cite to the Office in writing
    (1) prior art consisting of patents or printed publications which that person believes to have a bearing on the patentability of any claim of a particular patent; or
    (2) statements of the patent owner filed in a proceeding before a Federal court or the Office in which the patent owner took a position on the scope of any claim of a particular patent.
    (b) OFFICIAL FILE — If the person citing prior art or written statements pursuant to subsection (a) explains in writing the pertinence and manner of applying the prior art or written statements to at least 1 claim of the patent, the citation of the prior art or written statements and the explanation thereof shall become a part of the official file of the patent.

    311. Inter partes review
    (a) IN GENERAL — Subject to the provisions of this chapter, a person who is not the patent owner may file with the Office a petition to institute an inter partes review for a patent. The Director shall establish, by regulation, fees to be paid by the person requesting the review, in such amounts as the Director determines to be reasonable, considering the aggregate costs of the review.
    (b) SCOPE — A petitioner in an inter partes review may request to cancel as unpatentable 1 or more claims of a patent only on a ground that could be raised under section 102 (Novelty/Prior Art) or 103 (Obvious) and only on the basis of prior art consisting of patents or printed publications.

Amusingly, the upgrade race is stalling (IMHO...) The games coming out are not really tapping into the performance of hardware today. I recently (August) upgraded my Core2Duo with 4GB and nVidia 6800GT that I bought in March 2005, but it still did everything I asked of it. Even though it was 5 years old, I gave it to a friend who still uses it. I expect my new machine (Corei7, 6GB, ATI5870) to last longer than that one did.

Granted, it's not the "10 year" plan of the PS2, but it's not like I have to upgrade video cards every year (ugh, so much money wasted in those days) to play the latest games with respectable performance.

That's not the only reason... I never said that.

But it's most likely one reason. I can't count the number of times I had my Mom tell me she couldn't open some video and it turned out to be a codec issue. Otherwise, she liked the system I setup for her to try. In the end it boiled down to: "I couldn't open everything so-and-so sent me" so I had to set her up with a VM for XP.

The problem with this approach is that Microsoft pushes the plugin they wrote out to all those chrome users on Windows.

Will they push my ActiveX plugin to allow alternative formats in IE to all their users as well?

There's a definite imbalance of power there. One one side, the users are going to get it (usually in some obscure patch message: "Improve Internet Explorer experience.") and the other; the user has to go out and manually obtain the plugin.

That's really what's it's about (IMHO) Microsoft would rather keep you using pay/patent protected codecs because they can slip them in on a bulk license while keeping other alternative OSes (mainly Linux) from having that support (for legality/monetary reasons.)

If an open codec were popular, anyone could use it and people may not miss Windows support for 'X' codec that isn't available elsewhere.
