Why oh why do we expend so much energy attempting to come up with technical and legislative roadblocks to stop the spamming schmucks out there? Wouldn't it be easier to make it illegal to ADVERTISE in that manner? Go after the businesses that pay these jerks.
If that's not possible, couldn't someone just host a database that users could add the name (+address/phone info), url, and offending spam-message to? That way an organized boycott/reverse spam/snailmail campaign could be lodged against those who pay to clog the internet with their muck? I couldn't have been the first person to think of this...perhaps something like this already exists?
I bought a 5080 this weekend because of the past article stating that the new ReplayTV hardware would not have the features that I've wanted since I bought my 3030 (most notably ethernet streaming for archiving via DVARchive). That being said, does anyone know of a way to block software updates from ReplayTV? Do they come from the same IP address as the program guides? If anyone's got an IP address (or range) please let me know! My 5080 works as well as I'd want it to right now...no need for them to remove my beloved networking!
But for those of us with >30gb of music (if we could even afford a 30gb iPod), we can never bring our ENTIRE collection. Obviously, even 10gb should be plenty, but that's not the point. And what if my wife wants to listen at work? We have to have TWO iPods? I'd rather utilize what I'm already paying for and run Andromeda from my cable-modemed G3!
Besides, it sure is nice to have my entire collection available to me from any broadband-equipped internet connection. I have listened to my music from hotels many times without the need for my iPod.
If I remember correctly, van Eck phreaking gathers data from radiation emanating from the clock/memory buffers in the video card, not stray electromagnetic radiation from a CRT. In Cryptonomicon, they monitor a guy's laptop.
I have an aging B&W G3 and a bunch of old PC parts. I don't need a monitor. I already own Jaguar, and I'll still utilize the single user license by not running it on my G3 anymore. This looks like a good solution for me until the second generation Powermacs with the IBM 970's are available. (I doubt I'll be able to afford the first gen ones.)
Sometimes I put my T68i next to my computer monitor/speakers at work. When I get a call, there is a telltale series of buzzes and blips...and about three seconds later my phone starts ringing.
I can not seem to listen to any tracks on the Music Store. Keep getting "504" errors. Also, iTunes4 has some funky new button styles, and uses a different font!
Great news! I had given up on Safari as of Friday due to the latency issue. I hope it works for me, too.
As for the scrollbug...is that the bug where only half the page scrolls sometimes, completely munging up the display? God I hate that...so I might have to stick with Chimerino for a little while longer?:-(
Actually, even the 640x480 version had quite a few hiccups on my tibook 550 1gb RAM. Maybe the quicktime could use some further optimization? I've never had this kind of trouble with other high resolution trailers, i.e. Star Wars.
I use yahoo mail whenever I do anything online, but I give my "private" email address (my own domain) only to friends and relatives. In the two years I've had the address, I've literally gotten THREE pieces of spam...the last time was about two months ago. I have no idea how they "found" me, but it's not like I appeared on someone's list or else I'd still be getting junk emails!
As a Wash U alumnus(sp?), all I have to say is if I had a dollar for every time someone confused Washington University in St. Louis with the University of Washington or even George Washington University, I'd be on my way to the International Space Station right now...
Well that doesn't count. It's a nonstandard size, and impossible to use with any other card. I'd hardly call that comparable to this product's PCMCIA slot.
First of all, you have to have the Windows networking client installed. That's usually not an issue, but it isn't something EVERYBODY uses. Then you have to search your local network for machines with shares...and if it's a big org that could mean many many options. Then you have know what shares on those machines house the directories you are interested in...and if the "mp3" directory isn't at the top level, you could have some perusing to do. Then when you find the directory, you have manually create a playlist in your player of choice...and repeat the process for each share you want to utilize.
With Rendezvous-enabled iTunes, your machine automatically finds all other machines on the network that are sharing via iTunes. It will even display their playlists so you don't have to create your own. You don't have to do anything but launch iTunes.
Your argument is like saying, "Sure I can microwave this microwaveable popcorn bag in two minutes...but my gas stove, popcorn popper cookware, bottled popcorn, and Wesson oil can make popcorn too, and only five times slower! And all I need to know is how much corn and oil to use!"
Homesite/CF Studio makes Interdev look like a circa 1997 web development tool. It might be OK for VB (puke), but it's god-awful for web development. It's typical MS fare...awful interface paired with a trying-to-do-too-much mentality. I fear the day I might have to use Interdev to develop for our Cold Fusion site...of course if this goes through CF will probably be squashed into the ground.
Unlike some other posts I've read, many web developers do NOT use Dreamweaver because they can't stand "visual" development. I'm perfectly capable of writing my own code thankyouverymuch. However, it is much to Macromedia's credit that they own the best tools around...for both visual and textual web development. They were smart to buy Allaire.
A while back Apple posted an interesting business case for using Macs to archive forensic photographs. Here's the link: Digital Detectives in Wake County, NC
While using Macs isn't necessary for this, I think they have a good process using burned CD-ROM's. Interesting read...check it out!

I purchased Andromeda and I love it. I just wish there was a way to count tracks and manipulate/use ID3 tags like Netjuke.

It doesn't seem to have the functionality of the new iPods (new games, customizable main menu, etc.). At least we got AAC playback though. Whew!
(What else would you expect from an ex-Microsoftie?)

Methinks a missing L3 cache might be the culprit.

I had the same issue. Rebooted. Still a problem. That's what we get for buying a machine with no L3 cache.

If the phone companies aren't included by default, then what's the point? 99% of telemarketing calls I get are from them!

Uh...call me crazy but the iBook does NOT have a PCMCIA slot.
Is it me or is that logo a two-colored sideways ass? Awful.

EXCELLENT post. Spot on, accurate, insightful, and lucid. Couldn't have said it better myself.

This is why I have a ReplayTV (in addition to better overall functionality). SonicBlue isn't the network/marketing industry's BITCH.
