Conversely, you want to develop for Windows Mobile instead and MS will not only let you for free but provide the tools and an emulator to do so all at no charge (Visual Studio Express). You don't even need the phone to pull it off. If Apple really wants to be the big name in town it has to open itself up to developers. Windows did not become the big name in town by shutting people out. Apple must realize this.

  6. There's an easy way to do this on LOTRO Dev Talks About Bringing MMOs To Consoles · · Score: 1

Build for the console first then a computer second. Final Fantasy XI: Online did this six years ago and we're still half a million strong; SquareEnix must have done something right. The biggest issue is getting past not having a keyboard. In XI, you can use just about any USB keyboard and get it to work with a console and you're all set or use the soft keyboard (which is pulled up in one buttonstroke) wherever you need to. Hell, even the little Xbox 360 controller attachement works for this. It works because it stays within the constraints of the weakest console, in this case, the Playstation 2. The game and all of it's expansions still work flawlessly on Playstation 2. While a lot of people agree that, for the most part, it holds the game back a bit, there is also a majority of XI players living in Japan. So the game works because it was tailored for the weakest console then ported upward. Granted, the PC version looks the best but the Xbox 360 Version is VERY smooth in framerate and color. If you make a game for the PC in this sense and try to backport it I'll bet it won't work very well.

Then who or what is this laptop made for? I can see this, at best, being a tool for children in elementary schools (I had a laptop since third grade, supplied by the school) to get them closer to computers and allow them to learn somehow, but they'd have to be locked down heavily. Like no internet, no games (durring class) and some other things. I'd include a heavy range of software from simple learning tools and educational software, to things like programming tools and stuff of the like to have the kids play around and use these machines to seriously help them.

Giving computers to children who can hardly read isn't going to help. I'd rather give the money to a food bank.

  19. Speaking of EA and DRM on EA Denies DRM Problems With Sims 2 · · Score: 1

This actually happened with Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars. In patch 1.05, they introduced a heavier version of their DRM, similar to what this article describes, but within a couple weeks of it's release, released another patch (1.06) which got rid of it altogether because of the massive series of issues it kept causing with big guys on the ladder.

1.07 Introduced the Mod Development Kit and runtime environment.
1.08 Was a patch for the MDK.
1.09 Will be a balance patch.

However, will EA ever get around to the hundreds of thousands of errors just like this? In a similar fashion of censorship described above, they deny these errors exist. Why do they happen? Apparently from my reading of hundreds of posts involving these errors, they all revolve around mutlicore and multi-CPU machines. According to some googling, this was a problem with Battle for Middle Earth. What is EA's official response? It's because we're either: Running Emulation Software (a resounding no), outdated drivers (majority no), lack of fulfilling system requirements (big no) and networking issues (no through a horrible laugh). Another thing that bothers me about this game is that the main executable and many other things reside inside of another file appropriately named game.dat (you will see it in the above screenshot).

However, this is truly a shame. Why? The game ****ing rocks! I have to play it on an old 2.8GHz P4 (all other computers in my network are mutlticpu, emulated or not) with other shoddy hardware on the lowest settings possible, but it's still fun to play as a game, while not looking visually appealing at all. I'd rather play it on my Quad-DuoCPU machine, but I can't! Is this game a waste of money? You bet it is. With EA and who they are, do they really think they can survive making a game that can't run with multiple CPU computers when every other game in the series can do so without an issue? Okay, I've had enough.

  25. I can't say I agree here on What is the Best Console Controller of All Time? · · Score: 1

Particularly with the Dual Shock and the Atari stick. Let me break it down.

Xbox 360 controller: Doesn't feel bad. Pretty good in my book, but seems kinda small at some points. Though, I wish CNET would check their facts. This is not the first standard wireless controller. If I recall correctly, certain Gamecubes were released with Wavebirds as standard. Also, I would hardly call this controller original, it really incorporates tons of other things from other controllers, though the headset jack is quite interesting.

Playstation 2 Dual Shock Analogue Controller (damn that's a mouthful): I'll have to admit it wasn't bad. Though, once again I come back with checking facts. The analogue control stick wasn't first put on pad by Nintendo, it was Sega with the Dreamcast. Really I think this controller was a copy of Nintendo when they came back with the first force feedback device for a controller (Hint: Rumble Pack). What really irked me about this controller was how flat it was. The buttons didn't really seem to jut out of the controller, making them easy to miss sometimes.

Nintendo 64: Now I liked this controller, but it had one important flaw which I couldn't get used to and this is because the control pad and the L button required you to take your hand off the stick and move it to the left side. Granted, a lot of games only used one or the other, but the minor flaw was there. One of the fun things to exploit with this was playing Perfect Dark with two controllers, though it was still somewhat flawed there. This was fixed in the Gamecube controller. (See below)

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Good controller, not the easiest to hold, but still worthwhile.

Atari 2600: Um...what? A controller with one huge analog joystick that often requires a large amount of strength to move and one button? I have to disagree here. It's too big for one, hard to move around when you're four years old (I started playing games at an early age) and finally it's impossible to use by someone who's left handed. The button itself is on the left side and I use a stick with my left. It just doesn't work here.

Gamecube Controller: Yes. Just yes. It's like an N64 controller done right. Get rid of the left side additional and make it integrated with the main body of the controller. The sizing and design made it comfortable in big hands as well as small hands. The addition of analoge shoulder buttons made for interesting levels of gameplay, particularly with something like Rouge Squadron II: Rouge Leader, because it allowed you to vary your speed more easily. A lot of people found the button design weird, but when you got down to holding it, it felt very natural.

Wii Remote and Nunchuck: Another fine work. It allowed for gameplay that extended beyond pressing buttons. Wii Sports and Wii Play (do you? /laugh) took this controller and made it very fun to play. Swing a golf club, shoot a pool cue and even go fishing with a realistic real (I jumped to Twilight Princess) and you've got a fine controller. You had fewer buttons to play with, just the motion of your wrists and arms could accomplish so much and it even allows someone who's left handed to swap everything around and have it feel very natural. Yes, it hasn't been out for a year yet, so I'll give CNET the benefit there, but I'm interested in seeing where this goes.
