We had an employee here (a friend of mine) that quit. I replaced him with a series of scripts and now I 'do' his job and mine, too. There's still a little bit of manual stuff that isn't standard enough to be automated, but it's nowhere near the 40hr/wk job that he was doing. Just as with this situation, things had stabilized enough that there wasn't much human-work left and he moved on.

The Wii has already broken the 'lock' that the joypad controller has on gaming. Of course, the PC with its kb/mouse had already done it once anyhow, so it wasn't such a feat. The only reason that the joypad had any lock on the market was that it is -so- effective. No other controller gives so much control in so little space in any environment. The Keyboard technically has 104 keys, but only about 1/3 of them are readily accessible while the other hand is on the mouse, and only 2/3 when it's on the home row. The keyboard is nearly impossible for living-room gaming, as is the mouse. The WiiMote requires space around the use for proper functioning as well, so even it doesn't 'beat' the joypad for general gaming. The kb/mouse and WiiMote only beat the joypad in their particular areas of expertise.

You know, for the 360 and ps3, you could say most games are ports or FPSs. How's that any different?

"The few Nintendo games on the system that are good are well... such a small amount of the library."
The PS3 came out at the same time as the Wii and there are -far- more games on my shelf for the Wii than the PS3. In fact, it rivals the 360 section of my shelf, which has been out twice as long. Just because -you- don't like the games doesn't mean they aren't fun.

I'll agree that the Wii's graphics are poor at best. Every time I fire it up after playing another consoles, I go 'Eww' at the ginormous pixels. But then I play the game and forget about it. I still play text-based games from time to time, so graphics is not a requirement at all, let alone 'good' graphics, for fun gameplay.

In fact, my only real complaint about the Wii is the controls. The pointing is inaccurate at best, and confusing at worst. (I've had to tell my family 'point at the center of the screen!' a couple dozen times when they got the pointer lost.) The motion sensing has serious issues with left and right. The classic games play horribly on the wiimote, and FPSs should just be outlawed on it because the controls are so bad.

But that's only with more typical games. With games that were designed for the Wii (Wii Sports, Carnival Games, Wario Ware) the controls are beautiful.

"The Wii may sell lots of hardware but hopefully it diminishes back to gamecube levels, so Sony and MS can pick up the slack, I want to see those 2 competing better so we, the gamers get more choice and lower prices."
You want the cheapest of the systems to go away so the expensive ones are only competing against each other? Do you seriously think the Wii had nothing to do with all the price drops and model changes? Do you think that less competition in the market somehow means more competition? The only way your statement would be even close to correct is if 1 or both consoles were failing and at risk of just disappearing. Neither are, and they won't be any time soon.

Websites are designed to be used in a browser. Removing all the controls and stuff makes them hard to navigate, and the lack of tabs is quite a pain as well. I've seen that it has settings to add the navigation/etc back in, but then... Isn't it back to just being a browser? The biggest problem with this is that sites aren't designed for it.

In fact, I just tried it in GMail (on our domain) as well, and other than the fact that it's in a seperate process from firefox and they shouldn't crash each other, it's crap. If you click any of the links at the top, they open in browser. (I assume this will still be the case if you can 'installed' the 'app' for those as well.) None of the firefox extensions are available. Speed (of course) isn't improved.

And the worst part? Making it happen for a new site means creating a file, zipping it, and launching it separately. I could write a script that will quickly do that for me from a URL, but I shouldn't have to.

Unless I'm extensively working with a site that tends to crash the browser, I doubt I'll get much use out of this.

Personally, even though I'm techie, I'm sick of running servers at my house. I'd much rather let Google run my mail, calendar, etc, and have a webhost for my site. I'm happy to pay a company for VOIP instead of running asterisk, and I don't have to worry about major downtime if my 'server' dies. It costs more, but the time I don't have to spend upgrading and maintaining hardware is worth it. I get to have fun at home, and all the essentials are 'off-site'.

In fact, one of the things I've been wishing lately was that I could get Firefox to run in 2 separate processes, since it tends to crash (lots of flash-based sites) and take down my work as well as my play stuff I'm doing. If this will keep them separate (on linux!) then I'm happy. Also, I've had times when I needed to use a proxy in 1 browser and not use a proxy in the other, and firefox doesn't like to do that even if you tunnel one from another computer. My current solution is to use Opera for 1, but that means I can't use a lot of my extras, like better-gmail and noscript.

Personally, I hope this works well. I don't think it's a revolution, but rather a nice feature.
