As for video games, I would think Atarti 2600 probably. I remember switching the RF switch box and firing it up while listening to whatever tapes I recorded off the radio! [I am sure someone will tell me thats nothing, they stuck transitors in potatos while walking uphill both ways to get music.] Oddly enough, I got my Atari 400 and 800 many years after my first systems (2600, 7800, Odyssey, NES, etc).

Computers, um...I know I died many times on the Oregon Trail. However, what covered wagon was I in? Tandy something or other, or Commodore 64? Apple 2 maybe at my elementary school's library perhaps.

  3. MaglevLink on Maglev On the Drawing Boards · · Score: 1

We have a system in Southern California called Metrolink that basically hooks up the Los Angeles and surrounding counties. Given I am from the east coast and would *love* to be able to take the train/subway to work; I always try to make excuses to use it. However, given the structure of the communities in not only Southern California, but also any city that does not have rail systems; makes this almost a pointless issue. You will still have to drive to whatever station, take the train (if your lucky point to point) and then find alternate transport to the final destination.

I been planning a trip from OC to San Diego and I only wanted to take the train. I have two options currently. I can take Metrolink to Oceanside, then transfer to the Breeze system (could be wrong about the name), then get on the SD Trolley to finish getting downtown. Three train system transfers alone between two neighboring majorly populated areas. Not station transfers on the same system. This of course is minus driving to the station and then taking taxi or walking a mile or two atleast in downtown SD to the final destination.

There have been many proposals about Maglev and other trains to Vegas which again would be great. However, the most promising and realistic option would end the line in like Ontario or Victorville or similar area. The issue here is, the bulk of the drive is coming and leaving from OC (if we are only talking about taking 55 to 91 to 15), so once your out past Victorville, long as there is no accident its usually ok. Literally half or more then the average time is just getting the show on the road or the final 10% (don't forget 87% of statistics are made up, but any SoCal'er will know what I am talking about).

About the best I could think of, atleast for the area is high speed link between the airports, to Vegas, and maybe up the coast. Then also make the trains available at real hours. I could take Metrolink to Union Station, then um, red line (maybe?) to Hollywood to party. However, last trains run very early on weekend so it is of no advantage. Even my aforementioned trip to SD, very few trains on weekend are scheduled. I realize why, but thats also part of why its not used as much on the weekend.

Sorry to diverge, but just wanting to point out, SoCal, like many areas of the country will have many other infrastructure issues to overcome first before adding Maglev on top of it, no matter how great I think it is.

Regardless, I cut my teeth in the C++/ASM world and jumped into .NET kind of early. Did it have some issues to start? Sure. Does it still have some? Sure. As all languages and platforms due. However, I feel many people felt that .NET (and subsequently the CLR/IM, etc) was meant to be cross platform hardware-wise, while MS took it to be only on Windows (sort of a Windows JVM so to speak). Hopefully with this change, all the effort gone into .NET can now be harnessed on Unix platforms. Sure, many of us can simply use whatever stack is available, but it be nice to spend most of the time in one so you can focus on the product/problem at hand, not worrying about the idiosyncrasis (sp?) of a stack you don't spend most of your time in. Again, not being pro MS here, but I do know it would be nice to have the option to develop the same in Linux, for example. I know mono is there, but I always felt it took the .NET - down approach, instead of the CLR/IM - up approach. (Again, could be wrong as you can't have one without the other, but I feel many .NET people are out of theie element in Mono.)

You will be frustrated and annoyed having to carry to many things. As for the electronics issue, I guess camera and music are fine, but forget the laptop. That will just be begging to be stolen. What would you rather do, enjoy your trip, or basically babysit electronics around the world? I totally get what your trying to do (stay connected, blog about the trip, etc), but internet cafe's will have to be the way to go. You can try and make some friends along the way that have laptops (or even locals) so you can upload your pictures. Take a notepad and a couple pens and just write out your adventure and just type it up later. Not reason to dwell on your prose, write done, what, when, where, why, etc. You can fill back in the details later. You don't want to see the Seven Swans Pagagoda and not remember what it was called later on, but long as you write blurbs to yourself about what you did and when (so you can get the order right), you can easily remember the rest later.

Like most people, I find it hard to believe teachers are treated so poorly on many levels. For them of course, the two most important (in terms of it being a job) are money and time. You can point out some get three months off in summer, but what about having to get up 5:30am *every weekday* and leave at same time *every weekday*. Lets be honest, how many non-blue collar jobs are that strict in terms of schedule? Not many.

As for different pay scales, go with achievement bonuses or something. Now granted, it is entirely possible you have a truly disinterested student body some years, but I would think more often then not, a good teacher can get things going one way or the other.

If a teacher is not certified, how about, oh I don't know, get it for them, free of charge? If they are already in the system, get them up to snuff. You know, help each other out?

Everyone can point out how broke the system is, but like anything else, while these people are in the system, it only takes a few tweaks here and there and things could be much better off. No one can expect this to change over night.

I had a blast. Granted, story line is moot, the boss fights are pretty much the same. When you increase the difficulty, it just makes your shield/life go down faster and enemies are stronger and come around faster.

The graphics I think are good, the style is great. It had a very E-SWAT feeling for me, which is extremely positive. As for audio, come on, it has DJ Krush (-esque?) music during the main menu, what else you want?

Being able to run around the city, jump around the city, blow things up, etc, is great fun. You can't go into buildings, and I have not done much driving yet (too much fun jumping around skyscrapers to worry about it) but it did not so much appeal to me.

There are other minigames like racing around the building, following a green beam of light.

As for the penalty issue, its no big deal. Sure, sometimes there is "collateral damage", but long as its not a habit, your fine. Plenty of gang hit squards to blow up if you need to destroy something.

Regardless, beauty of all this is, you can get the demo and decide for yourself. I really liked it.

However, I do see what everyone else says. This game *could have been* great. No major flaws, its just a solid base waiting for a sequel I think at this point.

You can play games with other people at other times, you do not need to rely on your co-workers for that.

Also moving 120 miles for it? No job is for certain. You may get their and find you can not stand them. But in the process you give up everything just to find out. Thats a big negative.

Debt? Debt sucks, and one is paying substantially more? Again, should be obvious by this point.

As for job prospects. Yes, there are more .NET positions. But also note that maybe you should not look at just PERL positions, as most people say .NET when they mean (.NET/HTML/IIS/SQL Server, etc), as they Linux webadmin when they mean (LINUX, Apache, MySql, PERL, PHP, etc). But I get your point. If you truly only focus on PERL, then you have an issue, but I doubt you do. Good jobs will always be around for smart people.

So yeah, since debts a concern, and moving is never really fun, and its offering substantially more money, and only actual kind of benefit you really push is a "possibly more fun environment over the big place", hands down, go for the .NET position.

As time moved forward, the placental material merged into this area as well. One thing leads to another and basically it became an independant birthing(?) unit.
