To prevent the havoc and resulting downtime (which would result in us going off the air) these machines are not connected to the rest of the world, just each other. To add something to the machines we use audio cables and record directly in.
Perhaps a future solution for your friend could involve using a similar system (With printers and hard text) to keep the data secure.

"Well if you don't know how to recompile your kernel so your sound can work, you don't deserve to be using linux"
The computer is no longer a geek exclusive, it is now being used by *SHOCK* average Joe. If you want to stay relevent don't tell Joe "RTFM you n00b," instead you need to walk him through it, because 50% of the time, the Manual ain't gonna help him.
People shouldn't have to violate (maybe, maybe not, depending on what day it is) U.S. Law to play the most common Digital Music and Video formats out there. Yes, we all know Ogg is superior, but until more people start using it, to Average Joe it is F-ing useless. Average Joe, who, in using linux for his pr0n and mp3z, is NOT spreading ads and viruses. I couldn't care less about market share, I couldn't care less about your "Ideals" over a bunch of 0's and 1's. If a linux distro could, out of the box,

    1. Play DvDs
    2. Play Common Music Formats (i.e. Mp3, Wma, AAC) (with DRM if possible)
    3. Play Flash Correctly
    4. Not require the CLI for common, end user tasks

Linux could win tons of converts, and less Average Joe's on Windows means less spam, virii, and ads in your inbox.

    1. gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
add deb "http://packages.freecontrib.org/ubuntu/plf/ breezy free non-free" to the very end

    compare that to windows
    1. Get on google
    2. Search for K-lite codec pack (if you're like me and know what you're looking for)
    3. Find a safe site to download it from
    4. download it (it was 17 megs last I checked)
    5. install it...
    6. hope you can (or have a friend who can) sort out the directshow codec hell you now have
    7. install quicktime, realplayer (or their alternatives) and vlc

  7. Re:Wonkfest on Jack Thompson's Violent Game Bill Signed Into Law · · Score: 1

The ESRB ratings are enforced by many retailers. I remember the irony of having to purchase my friend (2 years older than me) Half-Life at a Target, because he forgot his ID card and was told he couldn't buy the game without proof.

    </Factual information><rant>

I'm a populist, I think it is the role of the government to protect its citizens. But this is going beyond protection.
I'm a gamer, my parents wouldn't allow to watch R-Rated movies (with or without them) until I was 15. But when I was seven my dad put castle wolfenstein on my PC and he taught me to play DooM so we could test the network. Why? because they understood I could tell the difference between fiction (DooM) and real life.
Sure, there are some people who can't. But these are the people who also think that WWF (or whatever stupid new acronym they are on) is real and should be imitated. These are the people who break their necks trying to fly off a roof (at age 15). These people do need to be shielded from videogames... and television... and all media for that matter. The general population, however, does not.

    </rant> <Solution>

This bill is not trying to fix a broken system. A fixing bill would be:
    1) No minor under tyhe age of 16 shall purchase video games carrying an M rating by the ESRB
    2) No minor shall purchase video games carrying an AO rating by the ESRB
    3) Any retailer found selling said rated games to said minors shall face a fine of X dollars.

We do this for movies already in WA, State Law says you must be 17+ to buy your own ticket to an R Rated movie. If parents don't mind their kids playing violent videogames, great, they can buy them.

    </solution> <conclusion>

Thompson is simply reacting like the lawyer he is. He is frightened no-one will take him seriously anymore, so he creates a bill that will allow him to continue manipulating and twisting what he can get his hands on. Instead of doing the logical solution (proposed above), the legislature (most of whom have probably never played a video game or understand the ESRB) thought it would be a good idea. Hopefully it'll get amended in the future.
    </conclusion>

To me though, it was just a slower firefox (with a color scheme that looked like easter exploded).

The reason I'm writing this is to respond to the file alongside songbird comment. I think Songbird is going to be significantly more sucessful in beta, because it has a broader appeal. It is the firefox of media libraries. Also I doubt these tests include other common user issues (like clicking the same function over and over again if it doesn't respond immedietly). Maybe I'm just not understanding what these do... but if I'm even half right, real world tests are the way to go.
