  1. Anyone should be able to sell blocks on Mega Bloks Wins Supreme Court Battle Against Lego · · Score: 1

Especially after such a long time of existence. Having said that it's hard to imagine Lego being replaced because competitors cant outdo them on features or it'd ruin the simplicity of the thing and they can copy it but basic Lego isn't to expensive and Lego has the advantage of being Lego with an image created over decades that a competitor cant match. But they should be allowed to try compete, good for everyone.

Linux is de-centralized so it cant ever be killed like other companies can by patents and other lawsuits, just ask SCO, you'd literally have to win against hundreds of companies worldwide and even then people are always going to be modifying the source on an individual level. It's everywhere.

USA has generally kept ahead by inventing stuff and that's why it'll probably stay ahead of Asia, the economies future isn't going to be reliant on writing some basic HTML code at minimum wage, it's going to be dependant on continuing to come up with great new ideas. Asia is generally looking to be a solutions provider for everything under the sun rather than making their own stuff. And they're renowned for making inventions slightly smaller and adding a clock. Anyway, good luck to them.

"You realize that him remaining in jail for the next 60 years will cost far more than £425,000, correct?" Obviously but that's a flawed arguement. Society keeps people in jail at great cost in theory to protect the population from harm which may or may not end up costing more than keeping whoever in jail. Nobody sane releases criminals from jail to save costs and taking into account human nature it's surely the publics will, most people would rather the government pay 4.25 million incarcerating him for life than having him running around in 6 years with 425k and living in a private helicopter.

That'd be an outrage if he really ends up with all that, they should make a condition he never gets released unless he says where he hid the cash if he withdrew it or moves it all back into the UK if he transferred his profits offshore. Otherwise he should rot in jail forever.

"The 23-year-old was also convicted of threatening to destroy or damage property, concealing criminal property and fraudulent trading. "

It doesn't appear he was even charged with spamming, "Francis-Macrae was found guilty of two counts of fraudulent trading, one of concealing criminal property, two of making threats to kill, one charge of threatening to destroy or damage property and one count of blackmail. ".

And when he's making 100k pounds per week I doubt that many ppl are paying for junk, he prob was scamming somehow.

Because it was the original and it has the community, people don't go here for the outdated site technology/design and the questionable editorial quality, they come here because of the huge base of users who will rant on about anything and everything. So it's hard to say without being tainted but Digg may be technically better but it'll come down to who has the best community and how many people are reached by that. Slashdot has the benefit of a simple front page with just stories posted and tons of people replying, not to much clutter and almost a decade of user buildup.

  9. Make them pay for the laptop on UN Internet Summit High Points · · Score: 4, Insightful

I've travelled extensively throughout the 3rd world and with this attitude the program is going to be a disaster "The goal is to provide the machines free of charge to children in poor countries who cannot afford computers of their own,". If you provide them free of charge all of the most abject poor are going to get them and sell them, especially all the children who have hardly enough $ to eat, and many parents would send their children to get them free so they can sell them. It's not nice but it's reality.

Selling cheap stuff as long as they pay for it and cant resell it for a profit isn't such a bad idea however I've generally found that even the poorest people interested in pcs have been able to get a dodgy box to learn and use their skills to get some sort of computer related job.

Having said that if your entire business and profit revolves around profit even if you can work on Ubuntu or whatever it's probably a better idea to work with Windows since your dealing with clients and windows related issues. But whatever makes him happy.

Specifically in the ram and video card department. I mean the people who want OSX anyway are always going to pay a few hundred extra because they want that but to increase market share and become more mainstream I really think they have to make sure they offer the right ammount of power/screenquality/ram/whatever else for the $ , not just a cool physical design.

It's the UN and it doesn't have to be control anything to have an opinion and a plan. The UN thinks because it represents vague pie in the sky ideals that it has a mandate for everything as if it's some sort of conglomerate of saints when its history proves it's anything but that. Filled with corruption and incompetence everywhere and huge wastage of funds with no accomplishments to show for it. Even Kofi Annan the "chief saint" is awful, when he was head of the U.N. Department of Peacekeeping Operations in Rwanda and Bosnia the General in charge of the forces was sending desperate messages to Annan about the impending massacre and the need to seize the arms from Hutu militias at which point Annan told him to back off and remain impartial, obviously the massacre resulted as a direct result of Annan forcing the force not to act to prevent a massacre. And that didn't stop him getting promoted to secretary general eventually after practically facilitating a massacre by going out of his way to ensure no preventitive action occured. The UN is all humanity according to itself but the reality shows it's all scum and corrupt and causes problems for practically anything it touches and that would include the internet so somebody needs to tell them to go to hell.

I can see the need for the internet to be saved if root entries were being removed for political reasons or what not but there's no problems with the current situation. I don't really see the imminent collapse the article mentions, the current system is here to stay, if people don't like it they can form their own and whatever happens will happen. Nothings broken and the internet is running fine under USA with no government interference of ICANN so there's nothing that needs to be changed.
