i generally like having a background tv show/movie going while doing other things like gaming. an entire season of a tv show i like on random works best. switching out disks would be too much of an inconvenience for this....
IT management and System Administration is 2 different things.
Primarily people with management degrees do IT management, and people with some sort of CS degree do sysadmin. The best thing for you would to be in a small company (around 50 or less) that doesn't need an IT manager and do both responsibilities. After a time at this, you can decide if you REALLY want to switch to full time management, then go to school for it.
This is what I've been doing, and I've found i enjoy doing sysadmin stuff (researching new technologies, troubleshooting network/hardware issues, helping people find better ways to do things with technology) ALOT better than doing the management side (brainless/continuous meetings, listening to stupid complaints/gripes, having "management" meeting).
we used to be able to safely get molested by priests, get blown up on our on time with our own chemistry sets, shoot anything with any gun, solve any problem with violence, not inconsistent chatter, drink and drive on our own time... now everything is a liability.... and our personal liabilities are the responsibilities of random insurance companies!! is there no personal responsibility anymore?
Parallels was a bit shakey, but it may have been because i had windows 2003 suspended. I tried to bring it up, no dice, just beach ball, I changed the amount of memory from 1gb to 768mb, and that dumped the suspend, it then started up. my non-suspended ubuntu linux came up fine with 512mb. I shutdown the windows 2003 machine and moved it back to 1024mb, and it came up fine again. So be sure to shutdown your vm's is the story i guess.
I used to hate macs, and stuck to Windows/Linux. Then I got a job as sysadmin at a half mac/pc business. They didnt hire me for my mac skills, but my server skills. I found out Apple came a LONG way since that POS pseudo OS called OS 9. I ended up picking up a macbook and its been great so far! I found out that its not macs I hate but MacTards (moronic Apple followers who buy macs for macs sake, not to actually do anything with them) So I consider myself in the 2%, but will never be one of the idiots who rant about how great they are, its just another tool for me.
I attempted an install on a motherboard with IDE and SATA components. This motherboard had the option to switch boot order of IDE or SATA. When you install 7.10, it assumes IDE comes first and sets up GRUB that way. I happened to have the BIOS set for SATA to come first. While I could edit/etc/fstab and/boot/grub/ to fix this, I'm not sure most typical people could.
