  7. Technology saved me from the RIAA on Indies Blossoming Despite RIAA · · Score: 1

I think that cheap electronics and the internet are to blame (for everything!) for the growing popularity of indie music.
Back in the 80s and early 90s, I really *wanted* to be indie, especially when I would see that bumber sticker that says "Corporate rock still sucks." But I just couldn't get into the bad sounding, low-talent self-made cassette crap I would here down at the local "alt" record store. Jesus, I didn't want to buy another Madonna CD, but the alternatives were noise or silence. I'm sure there was good quality alt music out there, but I couldn't find it. It was just not possible for a kid in a southern US town to know about an ass-kickin DJ from Toronto, or that weird (but talented) rapper from Rio. There were no mp3s for download in 1991, but there was a Sound Whorehouse with a giant display of Garth Brooks CDs.
Things are different now. I haven't bought a "big 5" cd in several years. And I don't steal/pirate/liberate music. But my hard drive and CDRs brim full with fucking excellent tunes produced and distributed by indie labels and self-produced artists who are glad to hook you up with some free mp3s just to get their songs heard. And you know what, I usually end up buying their CDs. Maybe to get those other songs that aren't available for download, or sometimes even when I have all of the songs already, just to support the cool artist who provided me dozens of hours of sound with no expectation of compensation (And once to get the bumber sticker included with the disk).
Not only can I easily sift through the crap to find the gold now, but the ultra-low barrier-to-entry for digital music production has created even more indie music than I ever dreamed existed in 1991. Sure there is more talentless noise, but damn, I never thought there would be this much good music hiding on lonely web sites waiting for someone to download, burn, and pass around.
So fuck you RIAA! I don't buy big5 CDs, and I've never used kazaa. But I've got lots of music, and somebody is earning my music dollars without giving you a cut! Eventually lots of people are going to realize it. You'll have to shut off the entire internet to stop it now!

So I installed GAIM, it doesn't have the notification area thingy.

Firstly, you need to be running a nightly snapshot or CVS of gaim (the 0.60 series). I don't know what version is in FreeBSD ports, but you can grab the nightly from the GAIM download page. After it's installed, go into the plugins page of the GAIM settings, and toggle on the "tray icon" plugin. The status icon should appear immediately (if you have the system-tray/notification-area running).

And sometimes, the window bar is on the top; other times its on the left. I don't want it on the left, but I'm confused as to what happened. None of my configuration files changed, but using the newer version of GAIM has removed the icon. Any hints?

I'm not sure what you mean. Is it a window manager problem? In KDE, you can right click on the titlebar of a window and select "Save Window Settings", and kwin will map the window to the same size/location every time.

In gnome 1 I was able to put applets for gaim and xmms in my sidebar. They are unobtrusive there and available on all my desktops. It was wonderful. KDE doesn't have these.

Both GAIM (in nightly snapshots) and XMMS now have "dock plugins" that place themselves in the dock area. (KDE calls it "system tray", and GNOME calls it "notification area") The dock applet API is a freedesktop.org standard that both desktops are using. So KDE docklets work in GNOME 2.2 and GNOME docklets work in KDE 3.1.

  13. Re:Won't work. on LGP Announces Game Development Project · · Score: 1

The only way to get game developers to come to Linux is to develop a Direct-X like API that makes it easy to develop Linux-native games.

What's wrong with SDL / OpenGL? It is stable, featureful, and cross-platform. The API is full featured, and the implementation is rock-solid. Throw in OpenAL, and you have got everything that DirectX does (except stupid patented crap like force-feedback input) in a standards-based package.
That is about as "linux-native" as it gets. I can't think of a single desktop-targetted distro that doesn't include the SDL libraries. If more windows developers used SDL for their games, then the Linux and MacOSX ports would be almost effortless.

My main fear is that KMail and Konquerer won't be good Evolution/Galeon replacements.

No worries. Just keep Evolution and Galeon. I switched from GNOME2 around KDE 3.1RC2 and haven't looked back. If you're worried about consistent look (feel is another story) then you have a couple of options.
You could get the Geramik theme for gtk 1.x and 2.x this will match the default Keramik theme in KDE, and even inherit any color changes made in the kde control center! This is what I did, and now the GIMP, GAIM, and Pan (and mozilla/phoenix) all match my KDE desktop perfectly.
You could also try the Wonderland theme (called BlueCurve in RedHat) from the RedHat Artwork package. It will theme gtk 1.x/2.x and kde consistently.
Another more difficult option would be to use the Liquid theme for kde, and dig up some Aqua[Graphite] themes for gtk. Since Aqua-ish themes exist for everything that is skinnable, you get a reasonably homogenous desktop.

With a little effort, you can have a beautiful and consistent Unix desktop, regardless of which apps you need to run or which desktop you choose.

It happened to me. When paperbacks started costing > 9 dollars, I stopped buying them. It hurt to decrease my favorite entertainment, but with my scifi/fantasy appetite of 2-4 paperbacks a weekend, I just couldn't afford it.

Then I heard fictionwise was giving away hugo and nebula award nominees. How could I resist? I downloaded them all. After spending a happy hour tweaking Weasel Reader, I settled in with my Palm to devour some words.

I was like the recovered junky, who, having one hit, falls deep into addiction again. But I still wasn't going to pay 9 bucks for a paperback, or worse, the same amount for an ebook. I trolled Project Gutenberg, Baen, OReilly look for a good read. That held off the monkey on my back for a little while. Still I needed more. So I went back to fictionwise, credit card in hand, looking for my fix. I discovered that unlike some ebookstores (cough, cough Peanut Press) not all ebooks were overpriced, DRM'd e-versions of last years NYT bestseller list. fictionwise has TONS of great novels cheap. Real cheap. In text format. Did I mention cheap? And even better: novellas, short stories, serials, all manner of quickie escapism that fit perfectly into the time it takes to ride the bus, or watch your clothes dry.

So now I'm hooked on cheapie short stories from fictionwise. On Friday nights I used to go down to the Blockbuster and rent 9 dollars worth of DVDs for my weekend entertainment. Now I spend a fun hour browsing an ebookstore, and for 4 dollars (0.30 - 1.50 each) I download a half-dozen good stories to fill my free time.

Toolkits written *on top of* Xt, like Athena, OLIT, and Motif, are able to interoperate much better than say Qt and Gtk+. You can embed Athena widgets in a Motif app, or vice versa. It is not so easy with non-Xt toolkits. It helps if you think of Xt more like GDK than GTK+, like a sub-toolkit. Nobody writes apps completely with GDK, but *lots* of apps use it indirectly.

  25. Galeon with three widget styles on Mozilla Jumps on 'Lean Browser' Bandwagon · · Score: 2

What irks me about galeon is the half-way integration. The app framework is nice, all gtk/gnome goodness, but in the gecko render window itself I get a mishmash of three widget styles. First there is the "mozilla native" widgets, which are unthemeable by any means, used for form buttons and the little arrow buttons on dropdown comboboxes. Then there is the gtk widget used for the actual dropdown list in a combobox (complete with gtk-themed scrollbar!). Finally, the scrollbars that border the render window and sub-frames are themed with the mozilla theme.
Unless you use the Raleigh gtk theme, the "classic" mozilla scrollbar won't match gtk. You could try theming gtk with a Mozilla Modern theme and setting gecko to use Modern so the scrollbars match, but that's a cop-out, and nothing will fix the "mozilla native" widgets in the HTML forms.
If you are like me and use the elegantly flat ThinIce gtk theme for your desktop, then galeon looks like the frankenstein monster it is, all bolted together from barely compatible parts. Call me when galeon looks as slick as Konqueror running the Liquid theme.
