  1. Bad idea on Hong Kong Using Children to Hunt for Piracy · · Score: 5, Insightful

The first problem with this that comes to mind is that there are a lot of piracy websites that have images unappropriate for kids.

Yes, yes, I know that any kid can go online and find whatever they want to look at. I'm getting at that maybe this isn't a task for children (in the government-run sense).

Well, ofcourse we will rush right out. Even if several people are saying "Wii" or "360" because of the price, there are still millions saying "PS3! PS3!"

And of the argument of "it costs $600 and only plays games": How many people spend $1,500 or more on a gaming rig? Sure, it does other things than just games. But if a person spends $600 on a PS3, they have have $900 to buy a computer to do those "other things".

Doesn't this mean that your drive fails when it runs out of lube (and therefore you have to replace the drive)?

I mean, I don't know how many people are going to want to take their hard drives in for the equivalent of an oil change or a fill-up every few months or once a year. We've had cars for 100 years and some car owners still don't understand you have to change the oil every some-odd number of miles. On the other hand, we've had computers for 20 years and some people still think that the computer has a cup holder. (See yesterday's tech support stories discussion).

The latter is a distinct possibility (although I'm still leaning towards natual causes).

But look at it this way: you have millions of dollars available to you and you are facing what is effectively a life sentence. You're out on bond, so you could run (but there's no way you could just run). So why not grease some fingers, fake your death (heart attack is possibly the most reliable if you've set it up right), and run away to some place out of the way. Maybe even include some plastic surgery.

It's possible, although I'm leaning against this being true.

  11. Language Lab at a University on Your Favorite Support Anecdote · · Score: 1

Working at a language lab makes for some weird stories. It was a lab full of macs (I'm a PC person).

One day, this professor who's always around is showing me her fancy, thin, mac notebook. She's pointing to one of the plugs on the back and is saying it's a USB port. I look at it and say "That's not a USB port." She insists it is. I tell her "I don't know what it is, but it's not a USB port." She tells me she's the technology chair for her department. I tell her I'm a Computer Science major.

Just then my boss comes up and looks at it and says "That's a monitor port." Apparently, because the notebook was so thin (or Apple being different), there was this USB-sized plug for an external monitor.

I worked there for my entire undergrad career. I've got plenty more where this came from.

    - when boarding the plane (ofcourse, plus ticket)

When I asked the woman at the metal detector why were there so many checks, she said they all check for different things. I was confused as to what else they'd be looking at other than "does the name look the same as on the ticket, and does the person look the same as in the photo."
