  2. Don't disable anything on Social Engineering Using USB Drives · · Score: 4, Insightful

Alright, I've read a lot of people saying "just disable USB devices". Someone said that everything should be locked down and that training people is useless.

Disabling USB devices will not work. Even if you do it perfectly, that is, disable all storage devices but not keyboards, mice, etc. Why? Because CD-ROM drives have the exact same problem. I don't think floppy drives have any type of autorun function, but you can still put deceptive file names on them. Same problem with Email attachments.

Now, go disable email, CD-ROMs, floppies, USB devices, and memory card readers at your office/school and see how much work actually gets done.

You must either educate people, or restrict them to the point where they can't do their job in order to prevent your network from being infected. Given that the latter results in a huge loss of profit, I'd try to educate people.

No, that's a rip off too. See you have to FLY to the end destination to land, why the hell can't I just do that right after takeoff?

Seriously though, I agree with some of what this guy has to say. Driving games and multiplayer games that won't let you drive car X or use multiplayer map Y are annoying.

But you buy games like halo and half life so that you progress through the plot. If you want to start on the last level then what's the point of even buying the game? Just buy counter strike or command and conquer if you want instant-action everything-unlocked games. If you want to most powerful weapon that allows you to blow up tanks with the click of a trigger on the first level, that's what a cheat code is for; but regardless, if you have that gun on the first level, you'll ruin the game.

The same goes for mmmmmmmorpgs, I don't play any of them, but I do know that the entire point of playing an mmmmmmmorpg is so that you can create a character, develop skills, find items, etc. If you take that aspect of the game away then, well, you don't have a game anymore.

  8. From a high school sophomore on Science Ability Down in U.S. High Schools · · Score: 1

Here's why I think science scores are down:

The curriculum has been dumbed down over the last 10(ish) years under the thought that "math and science are so complex that students can't understand them unless we make it easier". Thus, you end up with the textbooks using sandwiches to describe how molecular compounds form, and using eggs (the food) to describe how a mole (unit of measure) ratio works.

This is meant to make it "easy" for students to learn science, but all it really does is make science as a whole seem stupid and juvenile as well as very hard to understand.

Yes, Apple produces a lot of products that work well together. Ipod works with Itunes works on Apple computer which runs I[insert name] software.

The problem is when the user needs something slightly different than what they offer. The one little application that only runs on windows is enough to stop people from buying anything apple related.

Apple's boot camp aims to fix this problem, but it clearly states on their web site that they don't support windows or boot camp itself. Who's going to risk destroying all of their Apple files so they can run one little windows application? (people who visit slashdot don't count).

Apple needs to make a version of boot camp reliable enough that they can support it for anyone who's bought an apple computer. I'd buy an apple laptop in a second if I knew there was some assurance that I wasn't going to corrupt my entire Apple OS install when I try to dual boot.

I suppose this might seem a little off topic, but I didn't see anything related to mobile devices in the article. Oh and by the way, one of the articles in the post is only available to subscribers of the web site it's hosted on.

This of course creates enormous problems when you're trying to research any of the following:
    - Breast cancer
    - Naked eye astronomy
    - Nazi oppression during WWII
    - Moby Dick
    - Whiskey rebellion

My school also filters myspace.com. It hasn't helped anything though; it's not like you have a computer whenever you're in a classroom. You either have to be in the tech lab or the library to even be sitting next to a computer, our classes rarely warrant a trip to either.
