This decision is bad especially concerning Japanese Anime. There are quite a few people who would stop at nothing to ban Japanese Anime here in the United States. A lot of those people are corporate executives who don't want anything to get in the way of our work culture which is defined as you work during your awake hours and the only other activities is sleep, shower, eat and go to the bathroom. Gov't officials are like corporate executives. The both have similar attitudes of live to work, not work to live.
I have been on the elephant side but I think it is time to throw both of their asses out and permanently send them home. People like Pelosi (D-CA), Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Tom Davis (R-VA), Boxer (D-CA), Feinstein (D-CA), Kennedy (D-MA) (supposedly on limited time), Schumer (D-NY), Lautenberg (D-NJ) need to be fired from their jobs. Tom Delay (R-TX) is already gone.
It is time to hand Congress to third parties such as Libertarians, Greens, Constitution Party and others. If that doesn't work, the whole party system should be shit canned. Instead, each person running for a seat would be non-partisan, that it, no money from a national party but instead money would have to come from the district that he represents and that money would come blindly to him when he is running for office. Blindly would be defined where they person does not know the source, therefore be influenced.
Nah....... Ballmer throwing chairs ? He is just an amateur. The pro on throwing chairs is none other than former IU Coach Bobby Knight. He knows how to throw them !
When I worked in the corporate world, when I went to take a dump, the first thing on my mind, I want to be left alone ! My habit was I would go to a different floor's bathroom to pinch one preferably one that had very little or no traffic. Something like the men's room on a floor that have all women on as an example. In my case, the building I worked in had 5 floors. Our company had part of the 3rd floor (had their own bathroom which was separate from their regular 3rd floor bathroom), the whole 4th and 5th floor. The 3rd floor also had doctor/dentists offices, therefore, the bathrooms had literally no traffic. The 3rd floor bathroom was my favorite to use when dumping a load. Combine no traffic with some anonymity which contributes to a nice dump.
When I worked there I happened to have a manger that was an asshole and I got called in one time by him and got my ass chewed out for using that bathroom. I was told the bathroom was for use by clients who visited the doctor/dentist's offices, not for us employees. He started the conversation with, "Bathrooms here on the 5th floor not good enough for you to use ? Why do you have to use the 3rd floor......". It is almost a similar situation to this Website. He was also bitching that he couldn't find me in my office or in the computer lab. He mentioned that if I was not going to be in either place for more than a couple minutes I would have to find him and ask permission to be away such as the bathroom for example. I am glad I don't work for that asshole anymore !
When I need to go to the bathroom, I don't want to be interrupted to have a conversation, nor do I want to hear other people yapping away while they do their business.
It seems like the East Coast states are more puritan on attitude. In the company I work for, I deal with our counterparts in MD, NJ, PA and the attitude is "live to work" but also the attitude that you are not to enjoy yourself. They don't want you to enjoy the money you earn with high taxes by leaving you enough to get by but not enough leftover to spend on enjoyment such as vacation. You also have the more strict social rules such as dress. Out in the American West where I live, social and even work life is casual. I been to the East Coast and I gotten subbed in some places for showing up in jeans/sweatshirt. This is outside of work ! I could care less for the uptight East Coast puritan attitude including having to be very formal when dealing with certain people and their insistence with sticking to hierarchy. You have great ideas but you are told to know your place and shut up unless you are higher up in the working world food chain.
Sounds like our Republican Party (USA). Democrats like Jimmy Carter wanted it, Republicans said no. Fast forward to 2004/2005, assholes like Sensenbrenner insisted and were hell bent on getting it and now were stuck with it. Democrats were against it when it was pushed. Now they control Congress, why haven't they pushed for its dismantlement ? Sensenbrenner also loves this damn Driver License Agreement where our driving databases will not only be shared within the USA but alsi with foreign countries like corrupt Mexico.
Thanks to fuckheads like Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, we have Patriot Act, Real ID Act and Department of Homeland Security (DHS). I got a speeding ticket in Missouri thanks to a DHS police officer driving on the highway. As soon as Hilliary gets the White House, we will have a 55 mph speed limit and have something like a nationl highway patrol run by DHS who will make sure we don't dare drive 56 mph.
What better way to piss off your customers than to do this bullshit ! How much money do they get from the occasional customer versus the customer that orders alot ? Instead of shitting up service for the occasional customer, they can offer something like free shipping if you put in a certain number orders beyond a given number in a given time period. Something like put in more han three orders per month, you have free shipping for that given month's period.
Back in the 1980's, some group financed by GEICO Insurance proposed banning radar detectors. The group was known as GUARD (Groups United against Radar Detectors). They succeeded in getting them banned from military bases. They also proposed to get radar detectors banned by colleges/universities by using the same method - withholding federal money like this current bill. This was back in the days of 55 mph national speed limit. I noticed a lot of cars had radar detectors in that time. The rule they wanted was the ban on the use and possession.
According to some, even having a job is a privilege. I was told that one time. I say, bullshit !
I had a manager at one former job demand I bring in all my financial statements especially my stock accounts. I refused based on the ground that it was none of his business. I told him that he should only be concerned that I do my job and nothing else.
One rhetorical question, are we going back to a type of society where your outside activities especially legal are subject to employer scrutiny ? We don't like people who are into extreme sports working here. You (pointing to someone), you have a motorcycle... That reflects poorly on us, get rid of it or we get rid of you ! Before we hire you, we would like to come over to your house on Thursday evening and meet your family..... The line is being redrawn in the sand to where employees lose their rights or have their personal affairs intruded upon.
I was in Japan for vacation visiting family. One house I stayed at had a hell of a good Internet connection through NTT. I uploaded large digital pictures and videos. It was quick and also, did not have the stall down like here in the USA. If a file goes over a certain size, the transfer rate is either slowed down to dial up speeds or even stopped and the connection fails.
Why are we so behind the times on Internet, some of it could be the corporate executives that run the telecom companies get fat paychecks versus the money going into R&D and infrastructure, another is the RIAA & MPAA. The MPAA especially because fast rates are conducive for large file transfers such as movies and artificially keep us behind in order to defend their outdated business model.
Where I use to work at, there were penalties if you participated in certain activities such as bungee jumping, riding motorcycle, drove a high performance car (sports). Some states such as Colorado has laws against this known as "lifestyle discrimination". Even with those laws, your manager can still hold that against you without documentation. Performance appraisal is one of the means for them to express their prejudice.
I don't know this is a good idea. Right now flights between places like LA and OZ & NZ, there is not much to do except to sleep especially since it is an overnight flight. Bring in laptops and cell phones into the equation, no one will get much sleep due to someone talking or the glow from the laptop LCD. If it was a day flight, a different story.
A good compromise would be to have a work area someplace in the plane where you can get thing accomplished without bothering anyone else. But space is money. The more people you pack in, the more money the airline makes.
Here is my personal experience back this past winter, I did a trip between LAX and AKL (LA, CA & Auckland NZ). It was an overnite flight which takes ~12 hours. Qantas exceeds what we have got used to on domestic flights. Even though it is airline food, you get fed dinner and breakfast. As an added bonus, you get free alcohol. After the meal, the lights are totally turned off. On my flight down no one turned on their reading light, it made for good sleeping even in coach. On the flight back, I had one a-hole nearby who thought it was good to read in the middle of the night. It would been better to go up into the galley area to read. During the flight, I would get up every once in a while and go to the galley to look maybe read and be considerate of my neighbors.
Why would anyone in their right mind take their work laptop on vacation especially overseas ? Then again, this is America, a live to work society.
Even though I work in Corporate America, when I go on vacation, I want nothing to do with work during that time even though executive management gets upset that I don't want to be available for work related items such as calls in my absence.
I do take a laptop with me on vacation but it is for personal use such as personal e-mail, process digital pics, surf the web such as getting insight on a vacation spot.
When I pickup a new DVD, first thing I do is rip it and then I take the.iso image and burn a copy - for my personal use, not given to anyone else. I then take the iso image and put it on a different drive where I can watch my movies without having to use DVD media. Again, it is not given to anyone else.
So the DVD-CCA wants to make it difficult for me to play how I want to play it such as bypass the commercials. Some DVD's, you are forced to watch the ads. No FF, no MENU - all prohibited operation. What better way than to piss off your customers !
I did a recent trip to California. One of the routes was US101 from SLO to the Bay Area. One thing, I encountered many left lane hogs and 90% of them were high end vehicles with people talking on their phone. You blink you lights to get them to move over but they were pretty obstinate and insisted on sitting there. They even drive UNDER the speed limit.
Because of these quite a few morons, there is a reason why we need laws concerning cell phones and driving.
Another instance, yesterday in Indiana - in one of the posh towns of Carmel. I was behind this man in a Lexus. Light turns green - a left turn signal which don't last too long. I had to honk a couple of times to get him to move. He finally moved and I then proceeded to pass him. Looking at him a couple of times through the rear view mirror, I observed him doing office type of work with his phone, looking at a sheet of paper and looking down quite a bit and then looking up.
The gist of this, when people drive, the task at hand is driving, not talking on the phone, not doing office work, not doing make up or hair. The job is driving which requires full attention. Part of driving is being considerate of others on the road such as getting out of the left lane so others can pass and to allow those who want to driver faster to go on by.
So far, it is mostly small states that are rebelling but bigger states need to rebel like California, Texas, NY. Unfortunately, CA is looking at going along to get along.
On the unfunded mandate, you will get abused and pay for the privilege thereof !
We are fast becoming a society where the government is free to do anything unless specified by law and the people cannot do anything unless permission permission is granted by the government. Opposite what the US Constitution originally specified - people are free to do anything unless specified by law, government cannot do anything without permission.
Working for "The Man", it is defintely like that. Eventually it will get to the point where we are treated like children and have to ask permission to go take a dump !
40 days suspension is excessive ! One or two days might get the message through of not showing disrespect but 40 is harsh. Leave it to zero tolerance policy....
Not only there is Slander & Libel but there are political games such as in the worplace. Adult bullying is somewhat different that is it done behind closed doors instead of in your face. In the workplace it can be done by sending "innocent notes" or concerns to higher management to where it is guranteed that you will not get a promotion even though you deserve it and are qualified to get it.
Even worse, those in charge play other games. In my previous job, my manager and a couple of his "butt" boys gave me a lot of hassle and lot of it was underhanded. I was happy to leave that place. I still work for the same company though but a different project. When I was at my previous job, I had my truck stickered with a "tow notice" since in their opinion, it is an eyesore follwed by my manager's call, "Please come to my office" and a butt chewing about the notice. I had to go back to the job site after I left to see my 2nd line manager and my bicycle on the back of my car was vandalized while I was inside. Yet, nothing cannot be done, nothing was witnessed.....
I am getting ready to leave my current job and in fact looking at leaving the company. I got demoted - one of the last things my old manager put in right before before I left but took about 6 months to take effect, that is, took effect 6 months after I left. I am dealing with that mess.
I was in NZ back in Dec/Jan. Loved the place and want to go back ! Also, Kiwi's don't care for political correctness unlike here in the good old USA. There, you can do and say what you want and not worry about the 1 out of a 1000 gettin upset and their opinion taking precedent over the 999 others, therefore, you get penalized such as lawsuit, job loss, etc. Here in the USA, we don't have freedom of speech anymore thanks to P.C.
Same thing happens in the workplace, misbehave, pay for it at work. You can lose your job for using drugs - pee test at work, test positive, fired for example.
Worse in the area of marketing, public relations. Get arrested for an offense even if found "not guilty" later, you still lost your job !
Either the school does control the lives of the kids outside of school or it does not.
The authority of the school should end where the school grounds end
The original Real ID Act legislation called for states to sign the Driver License Agreement as written by the AAMVA which would require states to share their driver license data including sensitive information such as Social Security Numbers not only with other states but also with foreign countries starting with Mexico and Canada.
If I had a say, I would repeal the law and in addition, not allow states to use Social Security Numbers in motor vehicle matters and go as far as returning to the original intent of the SS# as for management of Social Security benefits only and no other purpose. The number would not be used for credit, motor vehicle matters, businesses, etc.
Be like monkeys and throw feces ! (fling poo)

I have been pulled over before in UT for petty things as well such as no license plate light - and I am from Colorado. Same with tinted windows.
