So what you're saying is you want unlimited license to steal other people's intellectual property? That its a "good deed" to use someone elses work for your own profit without compensating them for it? Because that's what this is - its a violation of the GPL - by using the GPL code while not disclosing derived works. So yes, it is stealing.
Rubbish, your comparison with the Tivo is completely wrong in all respects. The Tivo doesn't allow you to run your own code in place of theirs, which is one of the key problems that GPLv3 seeks to overcome, ie. tivoization. In contrast the Neo1973/OpenMoko is totally open-source by design, so you can replace any supplied host code by your own without restriction.
You're missing the point - the fact is that moving drivers out of the kernel and into the firmware in order to restrict the user from being able to modify them is a CLEAR VIOLATION OF THE GPL. This is in a similar vein (notice the orginal post didn't say exact same case) of the what Tivo did to restrict users from modifying code.
Well that wouldn't give you greater GSM functionality, it would *modify* GSM itself, which isn't the intention at all, and it wouldn't be certifiable by the FCC nor any other GSM operator anyway, so it would be impossible to sell the unit as a GSM phone. Calling for that shows no understanding at all.
Of course it would be certifiable as a GSM device because it would ship with complete GSM functionality. The ability to modify that via software does not render it invalid as a communications device. If that were so, GNU radio hardware would be illegal. Apparently you the one here that shows no understanding of the device or the issue at hand at all.
It locks you out of accessing the hardware fully, in the same vein that Tivo does. The only level of control over GPRS/GSM communications you have are AT commands. Any control below that is competely done by firmware from which you are restricted.
I predict that a chipmanzee will be our next president, we will have a permanent settlement on mars in two years, world peace will be declared tomorrow,
pigs will fly, etc. Futhermore, I feel no need to explain my position.
Oh! So now the RIAA is trying to ban the whole fucking internet. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!!! Crooked coporations make hilarious ridiculous statements in their senility of their twilight years just like real old people!!!
For fucks sake! The only thing you can see all over the internet for the past week is how they put a version of DCS-1000 on steroids on backbone routers with the switch permanently set to "everybody" and "on", and your worried about FUCKING COOKIES. Idiot!
P.S....feel that little lump on your neck? That is the microprocessor/gps module that they put there.
DEAD LINK. Anyway, the only point of doing this is if you are too lazy to open up your fucking aMule client. And really, if you are too lazy to do that, then you are too lazy to install a fucking extention. So what's the fucking point?? Oh, and it is SOOO worth risking the stability of my browser for a gismo of a vastly substandard filesharing net.
Ok. The scene now has: 1. The ablitiy to dump data from Xbox disk into ISO 2. A damn good understanding of media checks (thanks to this) which will help enterprising individuals be able to hack . these dumped ISOs to play when on burned on standard media.
Great! Not that this doesn't help the homebrew/linux sceen, but is MUCH more significant to being able to pirate/bootleg games! Wow! Turns out that the M$ "content protection" sceme was more focused on locking out linux/homebrew than it really was about anti-priacy! Not surprising from a company renowned for their unlawful anti-competitive practices.
Yeah, the thing is, in a free market system, it is impossible to offer LESS product for MORE money and seriously expect to stay in buisiness. Case in point: I am using Alltel basic DSL. Get ~1.2mbs (hey, far from switch as you can get, should be ~1.5). They also offer 3mbs, but that is not the point. They don't block ANY ports, or have anything else. Yeah, I could get Cable and it is faster (4 mb/s) BUT their shit goes down like once a fucking week AND they block mad ports (and lie about it when tech support was asked about it). You could tunnel, but this doesn't always work. I'm not sure about packet shaping, didn't stick around to find out. This is why I switched to DSL when I moved. Shit. If you really want to D'L, use the shit at school. Most of the kids there are tech illiterate, so there is alot of unused bw there - (average on the workstations is like 8-10mbs down, didn't test up).
You know, the way the MPAA/RIAA resorts to new and desparate DRM technology that is "unbreakable" and will "stop piracy" kind of reminds me of the behavior of a compulsive gambler. The gambler always loses against the house (hackers) and continously resorts to increasingly desparate and self-destructive behavior. In an unrelated comment, I wonder if the manufacuters will embrace this as a way to effortlessly sell a whole new generation of equipment or resist due to costs of retooling.
Just makes me wonder if NSA, et. al. already knows something is going to happen, just like they knew about 9/11 months before it happened. Then they "leak" this scandoulus report about how they abused their powers right before congress is set to renew Patriot Act, knowing it would produce the reaction it did from congress. Then, when said event does happen its "because we didn't have the Patriot Act". Then an even more draconian series of laws gets whisked through Congress, and no congressman or senator will dare stand to oppose it, thus stiffling dissent (hey, it worked GREAT the first time).
....until you are strapped to a table in an RV, getting your organs ripped out while still alive.

And what kind of control do you need over the GPRS/GSM ?
Heh, if you have to ask you wouldn't understand.
Do you have any control on your DSL modem ?
Actually, yes I do.
It locks you out of accessing the hardware fully, in the same vein that Tivo does. The only level of control over GPRS/GSM communications you have are AT commands. Any control below that is competely done by firmware from which you are restricted.
