Yeah, but you also have to consider the opportunity cost. That is, what would the workers be making if they weren't working for the "sweatshop" (a word which, BTW, is loaded with meaning beyond just compensation; "sweatshop" makes me think of kids in chains receiving regular beatings).

Just to play "devil's advocate"... one rupee per hour may be better to these folk than half a rupee or no rupee per hour. Simple economic theory tells us that if there were better wage-earning jobs to be had, the workers would flock to it, and the gamesmithing companies would have to raise their wages as a result to attract workers.

The local governments have to establish the minimum wage laws, but the question is whether or not their economy can sustain that minimum wage.

There *is* a benefit here... US companies investing in third-world economies. We view it as criminal if the company isn't paying US wage levels, but at least they are investing something... which is always better than nothing.

At the very core, what the fansubbers are doing amounts to charitable work for a for-profit organization. At some point that company is going to step in and assert their ownership over their works, lest they fall into the public domain.

Look at the logical cocnclusion of fansubbing:

    - Japanese company creates anime feature
    - Fans subtitle it and redistribute it on the internet
    - A large fanbase for the company's works grows outside of Japan
    - Company responds to consumer demand by releasing officially dubbed versions
    - Company has to shut down the fansubbers because of the direct competition

Honestly, success for the fansubbers (raising awareness of the feature) means that the company will have to pursue legal action against the fansubbers.

Chalk that one up to the educational market, and the huge investment they had in Apple ][ hardware and software. There was too much money at stake for Apple to just walk away from it.

Apple's final solution was to sell the Mac LC with the entire Apple ][ chipset on a daughtercard. IIRC, that didn't sell too well and most schools just bought Macs or PC's.

The biggest ISP in the world is going to shut down their servers that replicate Usenet, and that's a good thing? (Well, for me personally, I don't care about Usenet, but for those who use it regularly, this is a majorly bad turn of events).

Dood, AOL users aren't leaving the internet. If AOL shuts down their operations completely tomorrow, their user base will just switch over to NetZero and Netscape and a bazillion other ISP's.

  18. I have to agree on some points... on Mac mini All About Movies? · · Score: 1

The lack of of a DVD HD or Blu-Ray drive is not a problem, if Apple is looking to make their money on content delivery. The unit already has a basic DVD drive so that it's a useful component in your living room, but Apple would make the money on the HD content.

I agree that the lack of an IR port is problematic. Other posters here are pointing out that an IR remote is available as an accessory, but come on. If Apple's strategy was to have a significant installed base of Mac Mini's for delivering HD content to the TV on the day that they roll it out, then they definitely dropped the ball by not having an IR port built-in. I have to buy an adapter to use a remote? Come on, Apple is a little more attentive to design issues than that. Jobs's vision has alway been to reduce the clutter coming out of the back of your computer. And it's going to discourage a lot of people from hooking it up to their TV if they have to have a keyboard and mouse attached. Huge oversight there. If Jobs had simply said that the IR port was for iTunes users, nobody would have questioned it since the Mini is aimed at iPod users, anyway.

I suppose Apple could just sell a Bluetooth remote, but they left Bluetooth as an option as well.

Lack of a decent audio out is the other real killer. Again, you have to buy a peripheral to get what should be basic functionality in a media center component.

Third problem is the lack of S-Video out and the narrow scope of Cringely's vision (yes, I know, buy another peripheral if you want S-Video!). This is supposed to be targeted towards HDTV owners, but is that a big enough market for Apple to make any money on? And if not, then they have to fall back on regular TV-owning slugs like myself.

So, for me to use this on my TV, I have to shell out another $115 in peripherals, not counting Bluetooth card and wireless keyboard and mouse, which would then bring it up to $225!

I will say, though, that it's interesting that the 5.1 sound M-Audio Transit is sold through M-Audio's site and not the Apple Store. They don't stock it but it was too important to leave off the page. That was no small decision by the Apple Store, to potentially disrupt the buying experience by having you go offsite.

Personally, I hope Cringely's right, but I just don't see the forethought there yet. Maybe reading his column will give Apple the idea. I'd hate for Microsoft to be the only player in the media pc space.

The smart thing to do would be to do a live stream ONLY to the Apple Stores, not to the general internet audience, so that you'd have to go to an Apple Store to see it live.

But, no. This is all about Jobs throwing a hissy, so nobody outside of MWSF gets to watch it live.

when your company is run by a charismatic visionary. When he's up, he's way up and he brings everyone with him. When he's pissed, he's way pissed and he lets even his customers feel the heat.

That's why a lot of the older Mac users (myself included) cringed in '97 when Jobs took over full control of the company. Sure, he's got the marketing touch, but he can really be a brat at times. I mean, why did he kill the Newton division, which was a) way, way ahead of Palm and Microsoft, particularly in vertical markets, and b) out of the red and starting to make money? Could it be that he killed it because it was the brainchild and pet project of his former rival, John Sculley? Is there really any question?

Obviously, it's not because Jobs is opposed to marketing non-Mac gadgets; the iPod is doing phenominally well. And we know that after Jobs killed Newton, he tried to buy out Palm, which was largely staffed by those former Newtonites that he axed. So, why did he give up a market leadership position and then scramble to get it back? He killed Newton out of spite. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Jobs is a great visionary, but he, himself, needs somebody to pull on his reigns every now and then and remind him that this isn't all about stroking his ego.
