  1. Re:Hulu? on Stargate Universe · · Score: 1

BSG meets SG:A meets ST:V meets ST:TOS, but more BSG than anything else

The camera work and the editing is very BSG, as well the relationships of the characters and the whole military-vs-civilians structure of the story. And some folks seem convinced that Rush is Baltar.

ST:TOS is coming into play here because the ship will drop out of warp each episode as it finds the next stargate, and the crew will explore strange new worlds and new civilizations, and boldly go where no one has gated before.

The problem there is that most sci-fi franchises seem to be at their best when there is a frequently-recurring antagonist. ST:V tried to create recurring villains, but how do you do that when the ship is traveling at warp speed in one direction? The stargates may alleviate that problem somewhat.

Think about how complex the PC and console gaming industry is... game developers rely heavily on reviews published on popular websites and in magazines, along with all of the advertising revenue they spend, and the money they spend to secure shelf space in retail stores, and even TV and radio advertising.

The App Store is just coming out of its infancy, where an app can shoot up in popularity simply by virtue of being the first of its type on the market, and almost all of the marketing was done by Apple. Smaller review sites are popping up on the web, while some of the big players have yet to really come online (I see that Gamespot has some iPhone reviews on their site, but still lacks a tab for the iPhone/smart phone gaming).

There's going to be a lot more spent on marketing, in a variety of outlets; it also means that we are going to have to pay more for games to cover all of that marketing expense. This whole industry of mobile apps is just getting started.

There may be enough wind in the world to supply our need 40 times over, but is the cost of tapping the energy source competitive with the cost of coal, gas, or nuclear power?

We know that there are all sorts of natural energy sources around us, but its the financial cost that keeps us from recovering it.

"A new study by Harris Interactive notes that currently, one in ten Americans (10%) own an HD DVD player, while just 7% own a Blu-ray player. Crazy, right?"

If you look at the chart, they've separated out the PS3 owners from the Blu-Ray player owners. Combine the 7% Blu-Ray owners with the 9% PS3 owners, and that's 16%. I'm sure that most PS3 owners didn't feel the need to buy a separate Blu-Ray player.

I totally agree with broadening your horizons, and trying to socialize with people who aren't necessarily exactly like you.

My suggestion would be to join a social organization. My particular favorite is the Junior Chamber (formerly the Jaycees). Membership is open to anyone between the ages of 21 and 40. What they do, in a nutshell, is put on a variety of projects throughout the year -- some educational, some for fundraising, some for community development, and some are just for fun. You will learn a LOT about leadership and organizational management, and you will meet a broad cross-section of people from your city or community. A listing of chapters across the US can be found here.

Here's the thing: you need them and they need you. Most chapters are in need of tech help, someone who can do web stuff and the like. You need them because someday you are going to want to change jobs, and you may meet someone there that will help you get your foot in the door at your next company. I also know a lot of JC members who met their spouses there.

I mention the Junior Chamber because it is specifically geared towards young folks, and they are very active in a variety of ways. If not that, then there is the Chamber of Commerce, Toastmasters, Lion's Club, Rotary Club, and about a billion small groups on MeetUp.

Oh please, Project Natal didn't take off years ago when it was called EyeToy, what makes you think it'll take off now ?

It really depends on the marketing. Microsoft has a really hot product, but if they treat it as a simple add-on, as the EyeToy was treated, it's not going to go anywhere. Some developers will add support for it; most will ignore it, because it's just extra cost to support it.

The Wii is a success because the whole platform is built on motion control, and every game HAS to support it.

Does Microsoft have the balls to bundle the Natal with the next XBox and make it the primary/only controller? It's a helluva risk.

You have to take this report with a grain of salt, though. A lot of people set up blogs just to see what the fuss was all about, and probably did nothing with them. Similarly, I just read an article that said that the majority of Twitter accounts only have one post. I wouldn't consider a blog or a Twitter account with less than, say, a dozen postings, to be abandoned, since the authors weren't serious about them in the first place.

Over seven million blogs still active is a healthy number. I'd like to hear a report from Technorati that filtered out the blogs that had less than a dozen postings, and I'm willing to bet that the "5% still active" rises to 35 or 40%.
