"A studio sells a normal R-rated version of a film for $20 on DVD. It decides to sell a censored PG version for $30 (it's a niche market, people are willing to pay more for the censored version.)

An outfit in Utah comes along, buys a copy of the $20 R-rated version, edits it to PG level, and sells it for $25.

The studio is out $5, and it's an easy to argue copyright violation."

WTF? The studio is out a theoretical $10 as the $5 difference does not go to the studio.

That said, the only 'additional versions' they sell are "unrated." Not exactly what patrons of said outfits are after. It's like trying to ban MP3s instead of /selling/ MP3s (wrong **AA, I know, but they all act the same way, don't they?).

*disclaimer: I haven't bought a Rated R movie in years. I do not find them appropriate for my children & I chose not to be a hypocrite in raising them (not starting a flame, to each his own). I have rented a few edited R Rated movies, ultimately this is $$$ in the pockets of the MPAA (as much as renting anywhere else). This revenue will go away, as when I can no longer rent edited movies I will not rent the unedited versions. I will just wait for TNT to play them 1000 times in a weekend.

I graduated long enough ago that IM did not exist in [my] school (12 years ago) and I was an art major (read=all of my electives were art classes & I took art instead of studyhall - equiv to almost a whole year of just art) so I got away with a bit in the name of creativity, however I would have goten into trouble over something like this. Hard to say if suspended as the medium didn't really exist then, but we had a /very/ low tolerance for expressed violence in jest or otherwise.

Might notta been the norm, but was definately pre-Columbine.

Four words: WIFI on cheap laptops. My new Acer laptop has one of those crappy broadcomm wifi cards that has no linux drivers. Sure, I can use ndiswrapper, but now it becomes harder for the average joe. Also, until Linux becomes better at hopping from AP to AP regardless of encryption (obv. still need a key ;)) with the ease of XP, I will still need XP when I'm on the go. It sucks, I dual boot w/ ubuntu for when I'm tethered (wired nic works great) but I am not geek enough to find it easy to change my wifi settings every time I go from home to work to a friend's house to perhaps a client's office to home. Just not worth it. Mad props to those of you doing it, I'm just not geek enough. -JazzLad -- Sorry for spelling/grammar errors. I was raised in the USA, we're lucky I can read/write ;)

But, alas, you have nothing intellegent to say. At least you didn't say it. To me that is sad. BTW: I am aparently a rarity. I am a /happy/ Vonage customer. The features are a little slim, but of course I read up on them prior to signing up so I won't whine about them. The uptime is far better than my previous VOIP provider (Lingo/Pimus) but costs $5/mo more. Like everyone else I want $5/mo VOIP with 100% uptime and CD quality audio (that automatically cleans up the other party's audio) that I can use a wifi phone with that came for free with my no commitment plan that gives me the complete company directory for when I have trouble (which I won't, because they are perfect) that has every feature I can think of & when I do think of somehing new, they implement it immediately. I guess we will all have to wait for GoogleVOIP ;) -- This is not interesting, funny, flamebait nor trollish. Also not insightful enough to waste mod points on.
