There is a fourth option. Price the product to the market. As the recent court case points out, the recording industry has fixed prices in the past.
Further, as a fan of '60's and '70's music, I have bought vinyl records, 8-track, and cassettes. How can cd's by the Stones, the Beatles and Pink Floyd not be anything but pure profit? And they cost the same as new releases (ie. Backstreet boys, etc.) Go figure.
This is old news. I think I read about this, or a similar project about 5 years ago. They Basically take the wings off and put the body on a pivoting column. It is supposed to be ideal in hurricane areas. The body of the plane is aerodynamic and holds up well in high winds.
But why this is current news beats me. Maybe I should no go read the article. Typical slashdot reader.
I wonder about the future of these things. When I was in high school only girls took typing (to prepare them to be secretaries.) My typing is horrendous. I wish I had taken typing.
Today, keyboarding is taught in jr. high to every student. Twelve year olds type better than me.
I would love a tablet pc with good handwriting recognition, but in ten years will that be the same? I wonder if the tablet pc came about because some exec is from a past generation and lacks good typing skills. If so, what will happen when the next generation comes along and can type well (or type better with just their thumbs) and has less of a need for a tablet.
Quote: Were journalists intentionally targetted as journalists? Probably not.
Which is why I think the study is flawed. Sure, as an US citizen I get frustrated with the lack of good journalism that many posters have commented on. There truly is a lack of good (I.E. varied and about controversial, even vital topics) journalism in the US. But that is not what study was based on.
If journalists are targeted for arrest based on their being journalist or writing about controversial issues, that does hamper *freedom* of the press. But arresting journalist and everyone else that crosses police lines to protect lives does not.
Based on the criteria of the study, the US deserves to be ranked 17. But I don't believe that the study measures freedom of the press.
While I don't believe the FUD from Callum, there is a difference between my 5-6 bucks spent in the theaters and my bucks spent at Blockbuster. Blockbuster pockets much more of that money spent than does my local theater. The studios pocket most of the money spent in the theater. Having said that, I do not forsee a time when people stop going to the theater to see a movie.
I think this as well at times. But then I think, this would work only if I were the only one in traffic to have this ability. If everyone had ultralights we would all be stuck in a mid-air traffic jam.
I have seen a lot of comments critical of the article, but have not seen one critical of the basic presupposition: that each generation has a unique identity (maybe my lameness filter is set too high.)I think this is a major flaw in making these broad characterizations.
I am technically a baby boomer but share most of the traits of a Gen Xer. What makes me a baby boomer? I was born after WWII. OK, riiight.
My mother and I are both baby boomers how can two generations be part of the same generation(figure that one out.) Besides my mother and I have little in common when it comes to political ideas, financial status or educational background (which in my mind create ones identity more than the year they were born.)
Finally, look at the 60's counter culture- Babyboomers. And the Counter-counter culture- also babyboomers. So what identifies the baby boomers, conservatism or change? The answer depends on whom you ask.
We need to just drop the Gen *blank* titles and realise that they are all just gross over-generalizations.
Which is exactly why the article is FUD. The Great Depresssion affected people in all demographics of society. The dot com bust affected a select few (though the affects might be just as devastating for those few.) But to say that *all* of Generation X (which is implied) may have seen the best years of their lives already passed them is a gross overstatement.
Yes the article is a bunch of what ifs and maybes, but what if it wasn't. We cannot stick our heads in the sand and pretend that everything will be ok in ten years just because it is now. We need to think about these issues, weigh the evidence or lack therof, and make policy/personal decisions to prepare for the future. If the evidence points to the fact there is a low likelihood of dramatic global change then we are none the worse for thinking about the possibility. But if dramatic global changes happen and humankind is completely unaware and unprepared, then we are screwed.
I agree. But why will someone come up with a solution? Because they know a problem exists. These types of articles serve a purpose in that they get people to think about the problem before it exists. Once the problem has been identified and thought through, someone prevents it from being a real problem to begin with.
This is akin to saying the airlines are responsible for the terrorist hijackings. Do we need to make laws that the airlines cannot allow hijackers on board? No there are already laws against hijacking that place the responsibility were it belongs.
Same with the internet. Do we need laws that say ISPs and internet backbone providers cannot allow kiddie porn to flow over their network? No, we already have laws that place responsibility where it belongs.
So what is the solution 5-10 years down the line when we have higher quantity storage devices? Is there some other substrate material being worked on that can withstand the centrifugal forces of higher speed burners?

Wow! That's liberal parenting if you are ok with your ten year old having children.;)
No, not the ones the RIAA would like to beat "pirates" with. I am talking about BMG/ Columbia. I would like to see how the popularity of these clubs affect the music industry numbers since CDs sold through clubs do not count in units-sold stats. In these recessionary times I would assume that more people are joining clubs.
If the sound quality is indistinguishable at 128kbps and one is in a free format there is a reason to at least start encoding new files in the ogg format.

Or better yet, just walk out of the store with free goods. It works against the RIAA and the MPAA.*
*I'm kidding her folks. I know the stealing metaphor breaks down in the real world because IP is copied not removed, etc.
Is the amount of radioacive material any greater than used to be in old glow in the dark watches?

Instead it is All Saints Day. Irony?

How about Y2K. Have I just not read down far enough to see this one mentioned?

Of course if he keeps the law suits up he may need a CGI audience as well.
Maybe the researchers are retired NASA engineers and forgot to convert metric to US standard measurements (or vice versa.)

Hey if MTV doesn't play music, why should the Sci-Fi channel show science fiction.
Beta who?
Hey, you just ruined thirteen slashdot stories. That is a weeks worth of news. ;)
"Are you reading, RIAA?"
Actually they are, and it makes them very scared. Hence they tighten their grip on the distribution channels.
