I can't believe Google is disrespecting users with periods.
Since there is no word on a fix yet, it would be interesting if Microsoft rolls out a 3rd party patch which warns Gmail users when the recipient email address has periods in it.
Omen sounds like the Chinese New Year Monster which comes out every year on new year's eve to terrorize villages, who would have to set off firecrackers to scare the monster away.
Chinese New Year is on 29 Jan this year by the way.
It's going to be interesting -- Can Google outsmart the government like Microsoft did, or will the bottomless goverment eventually destroy Google and take over all the logs, or even operate Google as a govermental service?
I think overall mankind's productivity has increased thanks to the technology. I can't say if the IT world would be more convenient if 95% of us were using Linux.
It's like when cars were first introduced, there were not speed limits, cars were hardly locked and tyres were hardly threaded......
As cars become more common, more people died in car accidents, so you can't drive too fast anymore, must wear seatbelts and cannot drive drunk.
As car thefts become a norm, we must lock our cars, when that's not enough, we need to put on the steering lock, alarm, then immobalizer, and now the security datadot. However, I think overall we do benefit from the introduction of vehicles.
I bet only young people in Korea use this service?
I know many who do not (or simply refuse) to have a mobile phone, so if mobile users get a discount, non mobile users (that is, traditional consumers) will truly be disadvantaged.
I sure hope they have taken into account for SMS delay, SMS MIA, deleted SMS, lost mobile phone, hacked/guessed barcode and whatnot. In short, is there a Plan B when someone lost this eTicket, or a cracker guessed/keygened a barcode and used it before the real owner did?
Paperless ticketing, while important, will only cause monetary loss, imagine if a country is crazy enough to adapt paperless voting where voters don't get a "vote receipt" in case something or someone messed up the results.
Goo-do-no-evil-gle also has a stake in Baidu, which conveniently offers painless search for MP3 downloads.
I guess it's better to be there (do a bit of evil) than not be there (no evil).
From the article: "Western technology companies could have a powerful case if they acted as a group in telling China that they are under tremendous consumer and political pressure to stick up for free expression."
You mean like countless protests, threats of sanction on China's poor treatment to basic human rights, which result in nothing? Or do you mean North-Korea or Iran's nucular plan despite pressures from western countries?
I guess it's time for parents to wake up and realize that their children have grown up and are strong and indenpendant enough to ignore or repel parental guidance. These parents can either act nice in order to live peacefully with their children, or get kicked out of the house.
Normal computer users do not have to understand what is really going on with computers, they are simply -- users. Like users of washing machines, they don't need to know how the machine spins, or how many gallon of hot water to mix with cold one when how why.
So in layman's term, computer is an electronic appliance, you plug in the power, turn it on and use it.
If you own a Microsoft-branded machine, it usually comes with preset icons, DO NOT MOVE OR DELETE OR CHANGE THEM, just click on those icons to perform your daily task, like Outlook Express for email, Internet Explorer for web and online banking. When you're done, click on the START button to shutdown, it's like you need to open the front door in order to get out.
Remember, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT modify your appliance by adding, removing or changing any settings or program, this will void your warranty. You don't simply add a 12-hour timer in your washing machine, you just use the 3-hour and 6-hour options built into the machine.
Viruses may attempt to enter and destroy your appliance by asking you if you want to install such-and-such program. It's like your husband asking if he can put his red shirt in a load of white washings, and the answer is always NO. Saying yes to anything that changes your appliance in any way will void your warranty, which includes installation, modification and uninstallation.
If you really need to do something risky, such as visiting a new website, try getting a program named FireFox. It's like when you're washing your new $500 bra for the first time, you use a bra net. You may continue to use the bra net every time if you want to.
A factory-default (that is, unmodified) machine will usually do what we call self-maintenance, like a self-cleaning process in some washing machines. You may notice your appliance being busy for a while, then tells you your appliance has been updated, which is good.
Does that mean that when Vista comes out, I can play Duke Nukem Forever (which rumored to make extensive use of WMF) safely because this vulnerability should have been well and truly patched?
The reviewer said "There's only so much you can do to shake up the formula in a fighting game". I wonder if there a fighting game out there which is similar to Gran Turismo, i.e. a Fighting Simulator?
Frankly I'm a bit tired of pure fighting, but if I can play a character, who comes into the scene with nothing but a pair of dirty underwear and eats out of rubbish bins.
First I'll have to compete with street animals like cats, dogs and the occasional bears, then maybe some thugs and police. As I fight, I grow stronger, faster, meaner, and acquire more fighting skills and styles.
When I reached a certain level, I will be spotted by this Donkey King, who pays me a little, and train me up to fight with some amateurs, and later pros.
The money I earned can be spent on further training, personal fighting training that I don't get from DK, or I can use it on drugs to temporarily improve my performance but will hurt me more in the long run -- the choice is mine.
Then maybe somewhere in the middle, I will be offered some mini-mission-style jobs, like modelling, acting, drinking hot coffee or playing beach volleyball, all with a tradeoff such as missed opportunity for some championship fights and becoming weaker.
My life and health is not unlimited though, they will decline as the game progresses, and it is up to me to announce my retirement, find a girl to marry, have a couple of children who, when I finally died, can become my playing character again and continue a new journey.
This should give enough variations so that if you regret something you did in the life, you can play as your children to choose another direction (such as not accepting DK's offer and continue as an Indy Fighter competing against DK).
Same here, I played Ghost Recon a long while back, and was invited to try out a clan. After being accepted, I found out that most of them are working people over 25 or so.
Good thing about this is there was never a Rambo in the clan who ran around shooting everything, we spent a lot of time communicating and plotting the attacks.
The article is advising people: "Besides avoiding Microsoft products, one way would be to use substitutes whenever possible. If you run Windows or the upcoming Vista, use a different e-mail program, browser, and/or media player than the ones that come in the box. Stay up to date on patches and anti-virus software."
I thought most importantly users should be responsible enough not to simply click on or open anything in front of them.

Relax! Japan is still the land of the rising sun, except this sun is made in China.

Does that make Google the sore thumb now?
If DoJ is truly interested in porn, especially child porn, will Google surrender all releated searches?
Or till 2007 when HD-DVD is widely adopted in every home.

Yeah that's all good, but what's the point of having a fast-face-scanning girlfriend while I can enjoy playing Hot Coffee with better framerates?

If the sentences contain spelling or grammar mistakes, the player is rejected
Are you always playing WOW alone?

But is it as fast as getting slashdotted?

Never trust someone who writes GPL with a stylized L.
A more important question is, what can the Open Source community do about it? Legally and Koreanly?
Am I showing my age if I add:

Bush will decleare atheism.
I thought that's what the wars are for?
Paris Hilton will stop being famous.
Is she ever famous?
Linus Torvalds will soon to begin working at SCO.
Hasn't SCO been using his code already?
Microsoft will produce quality software
Geez you got me on this one, I can't really say it's already happening.
I believe China has had its fair share of violent protests (which usually led to revolution and overturn of a government) throughout its history.
What I'm trying to say is, What shall be can be the is of what was - Lao Fu Tzu
Does that mean China is serious about competing with the world, thus imposing the ban to ensure quality graduates in the future?
List 45-50 are slashdotted, so here they are:
45. Blend in with a device everyone has
46. Untangled from useless features in cheap chinese knockoff
47. Free of battery failure with compulsory annual replacement
48. Go deaf
49. Buy back from eBay the iPod you gave someone for XMas, with original receipt and no shipping cost
50. Invitation to the iPod nano class action lawsuit
Physically, yes, only a few seconds, but all the valuable asteroids will be mined by then!
