  1. Slower Dimension on Warp Engines In Development? · · Score: 5, Funny

What if my Apocalypse battleship slipped into a different dimension where the speed of light is slower, and it would take me another 200 years to move my finger to the 'OFF' switch 2cm away just to come back again.

  2. Reactive vs Proactive on Microsoft to Patch WMF Exploit Early · · Score: 5, Insightful

Microsoft is releasing the update early in response to strong customer sentiment that the release should be made available as soon as possible.

It would have been nicer if they make patches available as soon as possible with or without strong customer sentiment.

  3. Slashdotted on Yahoo IM Translator · · Score: 1

  7. When A Man Loves A Woman on Apple Laptop Reliability Survey · · Score: -1, Troll

"I asked them to fix the latch, and instead they replaced the hard drive and logic board. The latch still needs to be fixed! But man, I love this machine."

If this was a Dell survey, the very same problem will include wordings like "Indians", "Piece of Shit", "Hate", "Never Again".

  8. Re:Been there, done that, this worries me! on Nissan and Microsoft Create Videogame Car · · Score: 1

It probably won't take long but both Nissan and Microsoft will be few layers away from potential law suits. Insurance company will like that too because they usually don't have to pay out for such user-mod.

It's like that dude who modded Xbox to play pirated games, Microsoft will be sued for promoting software piracy.

  9. Mirroring Robots on Robot Demonstrates Self-awareness · · Score: 2, Insightful

What I want to know is, if we build two of these robots, position them facing each other, and instruct one of them to mirror the other one (i.e. lift your left leg when his right leg is lifted), can the first one recognize someone is mirroring it?

And can these robots still recognize their mirror selves if we secretly place a goatee on them?

I believe one of the reasons why we can recognize ourselves is because we are told what a mirror is for, hence we are constantly updating our self image database. I'm pretty sure I'll get confused too if a cloned me standing in front of me.

  10. DIY Compilations on Best Videogame Compilations · · Score: 4, Interesting

Since the cost of these games to the game industry is very low, wouldn't it be nice if gamers can pick the games they want from one source (i.e. all available games are sold via a middleman), instead of buying a 101-collection with only 2 desired games?

If iTunes can do that for songs, can a similar company do that for games?

  11. The Wolf in Sheep's Clothing on E-Paper On Cereal Boxes · · Score: 1

When kids see flashing pictures on cereal boxes we don't expect them to just ask for the product, but to say, "I want it"

I envision the day when cereal company is selling hackable E-Paper that comes with edible cereals, or iPod that comes with a BMW.

  12. Blame Game on Cyber Attacks on US Linked to Chinese Military? · · Score: 5, Interesting

Does this sound like another blame game when something bad happens in USA? If they have already traced the source and still couldn't fend it off, I don't know what they would do next, calling President Hu?

These attacks come from someone with intense discipline. No other organization could do this if they were not a military organization

Does this rhyme with "Space exploration is both demanding and dangerous. No other nations could do this if they did not have a space shuttle".

  13. Under-waged on U.S. Engineers Undercounted · · Score: 4, Insightful

The problem now is not U.S. Engineers being undercounted, it's about them being underwaged by rising countries like China and India.

And let's not be fooled by this per-million figures.

    The friendly article stated:

    USA: 225,925
    India: 215,000
    China: 644,106

How's that making USA produced more engineering graduates? And more importantly, what's the point of producing more of a product when nobody buys from you? This kind of self-comforting is poisonous!

If anything, this huge amount of graduating engineers every year is what caused the problems in the first place.

  14. UNIX on Java Is So 90s · · Score: 1

  15. $25-$75 billion on IPv6 Transition to Cost US $75 Billion? · · Score: 5, Insightful

$50B difference is huge, this goes to show nobody knows what's going on.

I guess USA's high internet adoption and usage actually hinder its move.

This reminds me of China's ability to build its new Shanghai rail based on the magnetic levitation system, while other well-established rail-using nations like Singapore may find it difficult to switch. Talk about right place right time.

  16. Living condition on Colds May Trigger Childhood Cancers · · Score: 2, Funny

If a kid has to suffer cold, most likely her family's financial condition is not good, therefore cannot provide a lot of necessary nutritions to her developing body. Could this be the cause too?

  17. Moral Victory on The Register Takes Aim at Wikipedia Again · · Score: 5, Insightful

And then what? Does that make the Register story obsolete too?

While I don't think Wiki should worry about all these whingings (does TheOnion have moral responsibility to warn its readers?), Wiki users might get more out of the whole ordeal by asserting (via an entry) the unnecessity of moral responsibility in Wiki.

  18. Screen Resolution on Opera to Put User's Face in Times Square · · Score: 4, Interesting

For me, I would rather have my photo on opera.com for a month.

By the way, does anyone know the screen resolution of this thing? I checked here but it didn't say much, and Wiki says it's often very low resolution.

  19. Games on Would You Like Some Fries With That Download? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I doubt movies will be popular, but games may actually be a good idea.

First it rolls out trendy games (like King Kong or whatever's hot at that time).

Then every week, it rolls out new levels for the game, which can be downloaded and brought home.

  20. Circumstantial on Intel Calls $100 Laptops Undesired Gadgets · · Score: 1

I think technical demand is circumstantial, and I'm sure poor students/families wouldn't mind a less powerful computer as long as they have a computer to use.

Intel is judging this product from a commercial point of view, but what MIT is more about benefiting others than making a profit.

  21. Finish first on Tulane University to Reduce Engineering School · · Score: 1

My opinion is to graduate on time, if you want to continue studying, you can do some post-graduate courses branched out from your major.

And if universities are cutting engineering courses, maybe by 2007 you will be in hot demand!

  22. Usefool on Hard Drive Window · · Score: 5, Funny

You would think that with technology this advanced (the Taiwanese one, not McGregor), yet we can't put a feasible breathalyzer in the car and determine if a driver is under the influence or speeding.

And what happens when these toilet paper with Slashdot RSS clogged up the toilet?

While the music is the same (ie x-x-x xxx), each person interpreted the "lyrics" differently, I wish Beethoven was still alive and finished the lyrics!
