maybe it would be unsinkable if only it would ram the bloody problem head on instead of trying to turn and cutting right along the hull (or whatever kernels have in this titanic analogy...)
A lot of linux distros do stuff like this though... I use fedora (although if I'd have had perfect knowledge at the start I might have chosen Ubuntu) and in that you can't read/write NTFS, you can't play mp3, you can't play comercial dvds... why don't they just say on the site that they are opperating under Russia (or a country with even less regulations about copywrite) law and then have done with it, making a really good, usable out of the box distro
1) SONY IS ACE!!!!!!! (which will get modded down as troll), or
2) SONY IS SHIT!!!!! (which will get modded down as troll), or
3) this site has actually helped me in deciding what to buy (which won't get modded at all)
seen as we are all glorified karma whore at base we won't do any of these things, because that would lose us karma... if only it was a number with no uper limit we could have real karma whoring competitions...
I only use my office suit as a glorified typewriter with a handy spell checker, like 90% of all other people in the world. The ONLY things which keeps me using M$ office to some extent is that; 1) the spell checker is sometimes a little better with some words (a negligable gain)
2) it has a grammar checker (a significant gain - even if it's not perfect - I do really need it though because of how bad I am at grammar)
3)the word count between the two is radically different (so I need a M$ reading). I recently wrote a 5000 word essay as part of my degree and the word count on Word was about 4906 and on Oo it was about 4997... I had no choice but to use the M$ reading because that's what my teacher would use and if her word said one thing she would take it as gospel truth
However, we're still all buddy-buddy with them because of oil. If we weren't dependent on oil, we could pressure the country towards democracy or at least leave it as some sort of backwater of no importance and focus on developing more friendly allies elsewhere
I can't help but see a flaw in your reasoning here, whilst it's true that the US govt. does seem to be dependant on oil I wouldn't say that this is evidence that they don't have technology to create energy easily and effectively. There is already the technology needed to generate vast amounts of energy from renewable sources; so there is no NEED for oil anyway (sorry about the capitals -wanted to make the point though)... if we say that it would cost $1 trillion to introduce a radical scheme of wind, wave and solar energy collecting then it would already not cost much more than Iraq. Then there would be no need for oil at all... why won't they do that... maybe the oil companies?
it's worth mentioning that I'm not against the iraq war (so don't flame me), I think that the right thing was done for the wrong reasons, which is to say; getting rid of brutal murderous dictators is always worth while.
you want something as deep and well crafted as a novel then it'll pretty much have to be a novel. There are limits to what the comic/ graphic novel format can do, you can't really have pages of deep description, it all has to be able to be expressed pretty much as a picture with only fairly small amounts of dialogue. If you don't like gory pictures and violence then a lot of the stuff out there won't be for you. I thought spawn was quite good, although tastes will be as individual as what you like to watch on TV.
it reminds me of a quote that I read the other day about the problem with weather forecasts: It is right far too often for us to ignore it, but wrong far too often for us to rely on it. And mobile phone... they cut off too much to even be used as a full time emergancy phone, maybe this is just a way of getting twice the problems. Also it would look like it was always raining over my mum's house, she seems incapable of getting or keeping a signal... so it won't be perfect
It is interesting to note that the best way to filter out child porn, in my eyes, would be to create the ".xxx" domain name for all pornography (defining it would be hard but so long as a sensible line is taken it'll be ok). Then someone could be in charge of ensuring that all the girls on the sites are over 18. This seems so obvious i don't get why they haven't already done it. They don't even really need the ".xxx", they could just start a wide spread well resourced acrediting scheme, well resourced with enough staff... why do people who claim to care about the children always try to block the best way to do it... or is it because it would cost money?
I actually read something about them actually doing this as a "feature", although to some extent it is there on XP, if you open up a folder with music in it there is a button to click to "shop for music online", I read that they were planning on expanding on that "feature"
(I use the quote marks because it is a feature only insomuch as death is a feature of the plague, it is indeed an intended facet but one which you would do almost anything to avoid)...
if you look at themes on XP you can only get more by buying them through some shit service that they sell (they used to be free)... how much more will they try and sell... I guess after reading about this and the logical extention of being spammed by my own OS I won't be as annoyed about re-installing Fedora Core 5 tonight (I accidently uninstalled all the kernals on my computer... d'oh!)
Good post and I like almost everything that you say, but I must disagree with this part
The mathematical model of conflict ("Game Theory") only has a solution (ie: win no matter what the opponent does) when both sides know absolutely everything, ergo the only way to establish a sane IT security policy is to assume the attacker knows all the defects and exploits that exist, whether they are published or not
I don't think that game theory has solutions such as this... lets take the prisoners dilemma, it has now "win" solution (assuming rational actors) even if both sides have perfect knowledge. To make this claim you would need to be able to show a model of game theory which worked out in this way, and to be honest I think that this isn't the case. It is rational for crackers to try and get exploits which will be advantageous, and it is rational for the OSS people to want to fix it (partly for vainglory... maybe a bit of diffidence). Because of this there is no "win" condition; it continues forever and will do so, you cannot end the game, unless we all agree to write good code and not look for/exploit holes... which probabl won't happen...
when people are saying auto-updater I wonder what you they are talking about... when he said it I had in mind something like windows where it does it without telling you and you have no idea what's doing what... in fedora you have yum; which will update all your packages but you do actually have to go into su - in the terminal (or there might be a GUI... I've never bothered to look what "software updater" is...) so it's not really truely "automatic". My question is when will this update make it into yum (thunderbird has taken ages and still not got in)
you bring up a good point, the gamecube was ace... also I can tell youi If you've been fdrinking then the name is actually really funny and you don't even have to be a 12 year old girl... which would be admitedly weird... come to think of it slashdot is reallly funny too
Another reason why this might well not work is that if you go on the site it doesn't even seem to work in Linux (the files are ".mov" so if I'm right you'd need quick-time for that which is an apple product which people who don't have apples might not have (I don't and wouldn't get it)... how are they going to convince me to change if I can't see it (In my country they won't let these adds on TV from the sounds of it because there always is problems when people make direct explicit comparisons to other products... so it won't be on tv for me either)
now it all makes sense why MSN was running the other day with a story about how macs are not secure and will cause you to get viruses etc... they must have got wind of this early. Its a shame I'll never get to see these adds on TV though, the Advertising Standards Agency wouldn't let them air, they recently blocked a mac advert because it said that the CPU's job in a PC was boring... : S... I wasn't aware that CPU's could really get bored
I find installing on XP really easy and I do genuinly think that linux should look at automating the process through creating a standard like the ".exe" which has the install code written for most versions... they could put in a command to see exactly which kernal it was if that was needed... but relating to what you said about closed source drivers "work[ing]" I would have to disagree, if I install the Nvidia driver from them on my fedora system it will screw up my X and create loads of problems down the line if I ever want to change cards... open source is the best way, even if that means making them in the community the hard way
What you had in mind was indeed the orriginal, often called Voltaire's dictum (sorry if I spelt that wrong) my sig is a somewhat nerdy joke about me considering that it is only my opinion which is worth dying for (for anyone) and that so long as I have freedom of speach it's all good... I suppose if I were to consider the nature of power I might find deeper ramifications to others not being able to speak out, I mean, if hegamonic marxism really is right then I might not notice one manifestation of the ideological state apperatus and I could get caught out... or if I consider the 3rd dimension of power (Lukes' thesis) being ostensibly thought control then it's hard to know if I even have free speach myself (as someone else sets the agenda and could through a systematic policy shape my preferences)... But I think that might be over analysing
...how this can be "safe" (as far as it can be anyway) with cars which are automated going on roads for which the system works (I'm assuming most are based on the idea of staying within the white lines) I worry about this quote...
We believe the robotics community is ready to tackle vehicle operation inside city limits.
- Dr. Tony Tether, DARPA Director
You can build the safest car in the world but there is always a need to be able to take a very quick decision to avoid some other idiot who might be breaking the rules of the road and not be in an automated car... still, if we all had them...
I don't disagree with your sentiment but I think that you're being a bit harsh the whole red flag thing, you need to look within the historical milieu in order to try and understand it. I think that that was less about protectionism and more about making the public feel safe (and obviously actually keeping people safe... don't forget, the first cars didn't have break and even with modern technology they are still not perfectly safe
He's right, no one will ever hold any qualification against you because any qualification is better than none. I've experienced first hand how these things have no bearing on your ability to actually do anything useful on a computer... when I was in college (that's the UK one, so I mean 16-18 years old) I was forced to take a City&Guilds "Key Skills" certificate, I actually think I failed because it was tantamount to a "I know how to do very specific things in M$ apps that I would never use for anything" certificate. My teacher knew so little about computers that when i showed her how to see envirnmental variables in command line she was really shocked - she nearly passed out when I showed her that the securtiy on the college systems were that bad that even as the lowest level user I could add admin privalages to my account. This qualification in my opinion is worth nothing. But it has not negative value. QED.
I don't know why this got modded funny, for me it is very true and accurate (insightfull would probably be better). anyway, I've had a similar experience with fedora, the forum that I go on (fedoraforum.org) has a lot of people who are willing and able to help and it's been really useful as a complete n00b to it to get going... unless I've missed out on the joke (due to being a n00b) and the Ubuntu people are actually nobs, in which case I look like one now...
A lot of people are bringing up the same points about how you have choice in firefox and what have you, what I'm wondering is; does anybody use the little search bar anyway? I have a personalised google home-page as my home and everytime I want to search for something I open up a new tab an go there... I even try not to (because using the search bar gets firefox money and I'm too poor to donate - so it seems nice) but I just can't remember and end up opening a new tab out of habbit... does anyone use them?
If that was the case it would be "Super Intel core duo 7: alpha code B9"
maybe it would be unsinkable if only it would ram the bloody problem head on instead of trying to turn and cutting right along the hull (or whatever kernels have in this titanic analogy...)
