While I still highly doubt it, I'd also point out that you'd have to find out exactly how long the "model" (not as Apple defined it, but in an equivalent sense to the rest of the PC industry) was in production. Otherwise the comparison doesn't really mean a whole lot.

  7. Re:record clarification on iPhone Battery Replacement An Unwelcome Surprise · · Score: 1

The only reference I could find to that was stating 5 million units sold in the years between 2001 and 2004. That's just not very many units, and I'm pretty dang sure that the original iMac (the config that initially released, none of the little "bumps" that Apple likes to give its line) didn't sell 5,000,000 units. It's plenty plausible that over-all the iMac has, though.

  8. Re:to put this criticism in context on iPhone Battery Replacement An Unwelcome Surprise · · Score: 1

There's some fudging of the numbers there. Apple calls every computer of a certain line an iMac, regardless of its feature set, components, etc (i.e there is no iMac 130, iMac 225, etc -- they're just iMacs). Most other computer manufacturers have different model numbers for different feature sets. So, while the iMac *line* of computers may have sold a lot of machines, I guarantee you Dell has sold many multiples of that number in Latitude and Optiplex models for the same time period (since 2001 there's been at *least* the 240's,270s,280s,620s, and 745's at least in the Optiplex line that I've worked with and the C6xx D4xx D6xx series laptops in that time).

The iMac sold a lot, but let's not get carried away. Dell has probably sold more desktop computers to date in 2007 than Apple has sold ever sold iMacs.

I suspect this is a red-tape licensing issue not a technical issue. The companies in question probably bought individual Vista Business licenses, found that Vista wasn't gonna work so hot in their environment, and then wanted to use the licenses they already paid for to use XP instead. So now they can do it in batch format instead of having to do individual "downgrades" (so to speak) for every licenses.

The thing about the iPhone is that Jobs has already talked about getting 3G into the iPhone (in the Macworld 2007 keynote). I don't know who would buy a $499 phone with a 2 year $59/mo contract for a device that will be admittedly be superseded by something much better. MacFans essentially do this on a regular basis with Apple products anyway.

SCOTUS found that just because you're a taxpayer, doesn't mean you can bring suit on behalf of all taxpayers.

It does seem odd to me that the kid was on public property and this was still the decision, but it's been established for long time before this that minors(students) have less constitutional rights than those of the age of majority.

    1) There doesn't seem to be a method of record keeping. Thus, companies can't do reporting, which means there's no quantifiable method of figuring out efficiency. If one of your test machines is old and crusty you bring it to the Tech Stop and they give you a new one. They track everything by swiping your ID when you "check out" an item. If you need more equipment than your job description allows, your manager just needs to approve the action. Seems to me at least that this implies there's some sort of back-end for asset tracking.
