  1. Re:In Summary on Court Grants RIAA Summary Judgment Motions vs. Limewire · · Score: 1

While I don't like windows OEM licensing, i know why they do it. At the same time, if you lost your oem install disk, downloading another copy of the disk (from perhaps a BT site) but then using the oem code on the machine it came with should technically be legal, as it is the use of the product not the use of the installed that is being licensed here. As far as I am concerned, if they don't state the terms of the license on the package, they must be pretty loose, at least it seems this would have legal standing, or does it mean that you are not purchasing a license and instead purchasing a product. If that's the case I suppose that changes a lot of things. That's something that needs to really be sorted out some day soon.

No kidding! That and show that you can make flash run on mobile platforms you do have access like android phones. How many times now has the android flash rollout been pushed back? 3? 4?! And Adobe is complaining they can't use it on the iPhone?! I suspect half the issue with flash is the lack of developer skill, that many develop in a way that makes it work but don't debug and slim their code when they are done (ease of development makes for ease of cutting corners and lack of good code I suppose). Call me a fan boi (trust me I'm not, even as a mac user, I am a large critic of apple in recent years), but I side with Apple on this. Show us Flash working well on other mobile devices before you complain.

The RIAA and MPAA have made it very clear that when you buy a CD or DVD you aren't actually buying anything more then a license. So if I own a license for a movie or album is it still illegal for me to download it? If you already own it, is it still stealing? A DVD you own getting scratched is a good example of this.

  4. Re:Games too on Is Apple's Attack On Flash Really About Video? · · Score: 1

I was going to say just this. How long have they said it's coming and it's still not here? I am betting they can't find a way to keep it from killing batteries or stuttering on most phones. I don't blame apple for not wanting flash, I bet we'd see the battery life be about an hour maybe 2 at best. The iPhone os is based on OS X and any mac user can tell you flash on the full thing doesn't run well at all, never has, probably never will. Likes to freeze browsers completely/cause them to crash. Why would apple want that on their phone based on the same software on a device with far less power and ram?

Even with access to the API, adobe is only implementing it on a few machines, most any machine that's not brand new won't use it because adobe can't be bothered.

I was wondering that too. As far as I know playing H.264 videos is free, hell if you have a mac you can use imovie (comes free with a new mac) to encode your own h.264 videos. If you don't QT pro is $30 and you can encode all day long (basically iMovie just adds a gui to quicktime, almost everything it does you can do in quick time pro though it might take a bunch more effort). How much does flash cs 5 cost again?

  8. OS X Machines on Why IT Won't Power Down PCs · · Score: 2, Interesting

I run 5 mac labs and while I schedule my machines to start up and shut down everyday (off completely on weekends), I do NOT allow my machines to sleep for a very good reason. If I allow them to sleep, os x when used in a server and remote home folder environment (os x server) will tend to freak out when it wakes up especially if someone is still logged in. I've seen machines beachball for minutes before it finally figures out what is going on.

I am planning on not turning my machines off at all soon, this is because I am going to start running folding at home on all of my lab machines when they are idle. I figure the lack of off time is warranted by the fact that I am contributing to the scientific community.

Also, the school is going to start installing SW (bigfix http://www.bigfix.com/content/power-management) on machines that will allow them to track how and where power is used. Then they want to tweek settings so they can show how much power they have saved. What this means for me, is I need to waste as much power as I can during these trials so I can continue running machines how I want to and still show savings. Seems silly but those are the hoops i suppose.
