Since Vista's release in fact. I have tried it with both onboard sound and Audigy 2 ZS

    Symptoms:
Quicktime will not play local files with 5.1 sound. Causes BSOD or slowdown and no sound emitting from Movie file.

When Vista was first released Quicktime would not work at all unless you have Quicktime Alternative on. It even destroyed RAID arrays. Apple quickly released the 7.5 version that fixed that. However 5.1 sound still does not work even with AC97 Audio, which quite frankly is crap especailly 3 months down the line. All other media players work fine (Cyberlink PowerDVD, Media PLayer 11, Winamp, etc) all with Multi-speaker setup.

As such Quicktime is not even installed until they (Apple) sort this crap out, which will porbably be months away yet. The 5.1 sound was woefully broken in XP with Audigy for months before they fixed it whean Quicktime 7.x was first released with that feature, and I dont see it being any different here. Anyone saying its the OS's faul are just the usual bunch who want to diss on Vista without actually TRYING it for any length of time. Vitsa for me works fine, except the few "minor" apps like Quicktime, and until the venders sort out thier prodcuts it isnt going to change.

  4. Bah! on Jumping to Conclusions on BIOS, Phoenix, and Windows · · Score: 4, Insightful

What this BIOS porbably does (apart form the mentioned updates on the webpage) is add the SLIC data for Toshiba into the BIOS. All OEM venders need to have the SLIC data in the ACPI section of the BIOS so they can use thier OEM Digital Certificates that they supply on the Install for Vista DVD's. The Digital Certificate allows Vista to be instantly activated on a PC with the SLIC data, VLK, and Digital Cert.

They are just covering thier own backs that on the slight chance that the data changes in the ACPI could cause some crap on other OS'es. The user probably set a password, or corrputed his BIOS during the flash phase, and is pointing fingers at anyone else so he no longer looks like a dumbass.

I get this all the time with people who bring thier CellPhones in for repair becuase they locked thier phones and forgot thier password. They state clearly that they never changed it, and when I load the phone into my PST's and retreive the code the look of realization comes over them and say, "oh yeah, I remember it now"

Fact: AMD isnt going to die/lose customers
Fact: Its not M$'s fault its the MPAA et all
Fact: its probably not going to affect 98% of AMD's Customer base as it is anyway.
its the same with Vista and its DRM, the slavering masses came out of the woodwork again saying that Vista wont let you do jack all. Totally untrue and all FUD.

I can in fact rip a DVD in Vista and burn it and play nonDRM video files just fine in Vista. What I CANNOT do is to use Windows Drag and drop copy to copy my protected DVD Content to the ahrd drive. But a little tool called DVDDecryptor (which is old as dirt and no longer in development) still works in Vista and with one click of a button I have copied content to the hard drive for porcessing and burning.

Im 100% sure that someone will make software that will do the same thing (do what you are not supposed to do) in this case too. Its only so AMD can keep MPAA, Sony etc happy. Intel will probably be the same if/when this comes to light. so what are you all gonna do then? all start breaking out the Commodore Amiga's and C64's so you are DRM free..

The iPhone will go the same way as the T-Mobile Sidekick. An expensive "toy" for those who can afford it. Everyone else will buy the more function rip-offs coming out by LG and the like and they wont be restricted to just One carrier (Cingular, which BTW have about as much signal strength in our upper end of the state as Voyager one does now, Verizon and US Cellular rule this roost so the iPhone is not an option)

You'd be suprised how much better it is. - Network speed was inconsistent and seems to be bound to movements of the sun. I havent had a single issue with networkspeed in Vista. Again its maybe because of the bloat. - Many printers (including my HP 2600n) are still unsupported. Not sure if this is HP being their usual crap self or just a complete inability to get Vista to play properly with network printers. This is HP, again... Look around you'll find they wont support most printers till "later this year" its not like Vista was in RC for like 12 months or anything... Im sure 12 months is MORE than enuff time to write drivers... - Aero. Why? Because it needs to look nice??.. It has to be at least competitve to OSX and some Linux Distros.. You arent froced to use it, you CAN turn it off you know... Totally invalid point.. - So many features like "Map Network Drive" have now been moved so they can only be access from specfic areas like "My Computer" But its still there??... So they cant change how an OS looks? so whats the point of releaseing a new OS that looks just like the last one.. Im sure you'd bitch about THAT too... - The updated XP style for control panel etc is really frustrating. Again you can turn it off and use the nice detailed view ... a pointless argument. - When opening some MS Office 2007 applications, the screen would corrupt then everything would hang for about 3 minutes. Obvioulsy a driver problem probably a BLOAT problem.. I would put a good bet on it that if you re-installed the OS and got the latest drivers again it would work fine. I have no such issues at all. - Maybe a problem with Vista's sound libraries? Music sounded tinny through Vista, but cleaner in XP on the same machine. You can even get pre-modded BIOS's for most popular motherboards now so you dont have to do the hacking yourself.

This has been around for like 4 weeks now...

I'd give links, but Im sure its against the rules so I wont..

If they blacklist the current OEM keys' then most of the PC's sold thru Dell, HP, Asus will also be blacklisted. Wont be good PR thats for sure... and even if they do its only a matter of using Keyfinder on the latest OEM install to get a new key.

The Paradox one will probably be worked around as it modifies the (VISTALDR) Bootlader and it will only be a matter of time before M$ releases a patch to fix that.

I remember discussing this very issue with Peter Moylenuex and Les Edgar when we was trying to get a game published by Bullfrog (They were actually trying to get into the publishing game until EA bought them out... little known fact). Peter said that the Amiga was being killed by Piracy and that the consoles would take over.
