    This conversation can go two ways depending what continent you are on (North America or Europe). In the US you are right in Europe you are likely way off. Europe has an efficient train system that goes much faster and people don't have to travel as far (a distance taste test is provided below) to get to the places of interest. That and the fact that European trains can travel about three times as fast as US trains makes all of the difference.

    Don't get me wrong, I don't like Bush that much either. However, I don't have any confidence that a Democratic congress and/or president would do much better for the people.

    I don't know if this can be speciffically attributed to Bush. I would be more inclined to say the government as a whole makes very stupid decisions based on budgets.

    I think the biggest reason that firefox is not mainstream is because it isn't the default browset on most peoples home computers. I tried to get my family members (just average non techie joes) to switch to it but the conversation went somthing like this: me "you guys should switch to firefox, it has a lot of neat features" family "i don't feel like installing it, and now IE has tabs see" me "ugh" I think most people will likely not do work to get a better browser when what they have seems to be OK.

    I am in the military and have had my personal information lost/stolen 3 times in the last 18 months. 1) By bank of american "shipping" backup tapes of my account history and other gov crad holders in the back of somones car, 2) Veterans Affairs laptop, 3) Someone hacking into the DOE. This kind of thing happens all of the time and there aren't any real consequences for anyone in either the public or private sectore. As you all may remember the VA loss affected 26 MILLION people.

    I don't think it has anything to do with justification. If you can get exactly what you want for free and very little risk of punishment then most people will do it. I think of it kind of like speeding by a couple of miles per hour. I get what I want (home a little fast or through that yellow light) and there is almost no risk. People won't stop pirating until cost/risk of being punished is much higher (its the same reason you tend not to speed in a school zone, the huge ticket).

    Is this (10,000psi) a maximum tensile loading or maximum shear? Most glues have poor tensile properties.

    A PE of 80 is based on last years earnings. It will be 40 this year. Investors on wall street pay up for growth and google has a lot of that. Last quarter they missed estimates when they only got 80% revenue growth from the previous year.

    If google makes this years earnings estimates (which there is a great chance of) it will only have a PE of 40 (yahoo's forward looking PA is about 60), which is not that overvalued at all. You have to look at value per share (each share this year should earn between $8-$11) not absolute cost per share.

    come on. If you are sitting at your computer with a high speed internet conection up in another window is it really that hard to do something else for 30 seconds. I watch three rounds of the NCAA basketball tournament like this and never paid attention to a single commercial. The commercials won't be that bad, just go to the kitchen and get a snack or visit your favorite website. The real benefit here is that you can watch the show that you want on your own schedule for FREE. No paying those bastards at comcast anything for ON DEMAND.

    The addiction does need to be addressed. The difference between pr0n and D&D is that not every boy on earth feels a need to play D&D. As was discussed in numerous other posts the sexually need is very physical (i.e. much closer to cocaine than D&D is).

    The difference is the access. If there is someone who would be addicted to porn has free and discrete access to it that person is much more likely to become an addict and start the self destructive behavior that follows. So there is a difference if you have seen a porn mag on the playground or having to make a public apperance at a gas station to purchase it and seeing it in your room.

    But you are assuming that the people who work at walmart would have good jobs with health insurance if they didn't work there. Many of the folks there aren't employable else where and would still be "subsidized" by the rest of us.

    One way to sell things by weight is just have the RFID in a lable that was printed off like when you get meat with a bar code on it. This would require a veggtable attendant in the super market though.

    Another piece of evidence that Google is not concerned with stock price is the fact that they do not give earnings guidance to the street. They could have easily avoided the recent tumble of share price if they would have called the lower earnings last quarter, then the street would have expected a "measly 82% revenue growth" instead of 130%. Remember that page and brin both lost more than 2.5 million today on the stock decline.

    Caller ID is free on Cell Phones. I don't have a land line and no one knows my cell phone number unless I give it too them. I only have a cell phone. I often time don't answer my phone unless I recognize the number. I turn it off when I don't want it to ring. The government doesn't need to be involved. If you don't want people to post stuff on your blog then put a password on it that you can give to people to post. Again, the government doesn't need to be involved.
