Patents laws are different than copyright laws (although I don't like them entirely either) and cover different things. Just the time frames involved will give you an idea. The length for a patent is 20 years (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patents) and a cpoyright lasts the life of the author plus 70 years, and 95 years from the date of first publication or 120 from creation for corporate authorship (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright). Both could be shorter but copyright is definately more bloated.

I don't buy the "crippling economies" argument. Making the changes, whether needed or not, will not destroy the economy it will only force money to change hands. There are a lot of people that change would cost money (e.g., coal power plants) and there are a number of people that could make money off the deal (e.g., nulcear power companies, solar technology companies). Yeah, if in one day you decided that all things that might affect global warming had to stop instantly things would be bad, but that won't happen. All change will be phased in over a period of time, whether it is fast enough to solve the supposed problem or not.

Back in 1999 I had an internship at a "spaceport" in idaho competing to be the home of Lockheed's failed Venture Star (X-33). The advantages in Idaho are you start at about 5000 feet elevation and if you want a polar orbit the farther north the better. Since the plan was to pick 2 sites idaho (like about 30 other sates) thought they could have a compelling reason to be the second, every one assumed florida would be one. Based on my experience there and the problems we were facing because we would have to fly close to calgary and edmonton I have to say flying over DC is definately a very long shot. The population density of the east coast will be very problematic for anyone trying to launch east that is not on the coast. If you launch from the mid west by the time you get to the coast your rocket will have enough velocity to bring many more cities into play during an error/failure than those you fly directly over (Boston, NYC, Phili, Baltimore, DC). I am not saying it is impossible but you will have a very hard time proving to the FAA and the public that there is a 10E-9 or even 10E-6 chance of killing someone during an error (these were the kinds of numbers we were trying to show for launching north from idaho). For reference population densities of canada can be seen at http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/peoplea ndsociety/population/population2001/density2001 and population densities of america can be seen at http://atlas.nrcan.gc.ca/site/english/maps/peoplea ndsociety/population/population2001/density2001.

This link (http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf) has the federal income tax tables for adjusted gross income. Your effective tax rate for $30K is 13.7% w/o FICA. Add 7.5% and you get 20% which is only half of 40%. You have to make a lot of money to pay 40% tax, but it turns out that the more you make the easier it is to buy deductions. I am not trying to defend the tax system (I especially hate regressive taxes and loopholes that poor people can't afford), just trying to help with the facts.

  15. Re:Still Not Six Sigma on How They Make LEGO Bricks · · Score: 4, Informative

How easy it is to obtain depends almost entirely what you standards are. For example if you make metal forgins and you say you can live with an internal defect that is 0.25" in diameter you will be able to attain a 6 sigma process much easier than if you said your standard was 1/10 that size. The sigma level for the same product line can change just based on who the customer is. The higher the regulation of an industy and therefore necessity for quality (think nuclear or aircraft) the less likely you are to have a high sigma process because you can't tolerate the same kind of defects. That is why nuclear grade materials or aircraft certified parts are SO much more expensive than your run of the mill hardware store (home depot) parts/materials that look the same. Go back to material forgings, material that goes into a nuclear reactor has to have much smaller allowable defects than say the same material (like stainless steel) that will be used for you hammer in your house. To get material that meets the requirements you have to inspect much more product and reject at much higher rates.

That is not exactly true. I get live quotes from all american exchanges, but if you want Level II quotes from NASDAQ, for example, you have to pay extra for that and you do get more than the quotes. You will get the information for all of the currently placed orders with their limits. Thus you can better predict where a stock is headed. For example if want to buy stock XYZ and you just have a live quote you will only notice that the last trade was made at say $5.55 and you might say I will buy at that price. The level II quote might also tell you that there are say 12 orders to sell XYZ ranging in price from $5.55 up to $5.60 while there are 120 buy orders that range from $5.20 to $5.54. This will tell you that the rest of the market doesn't think the stock is very attractive at $5.55 and will likely go down.
