  4. Devil Advocate on Are End Users to Blame for OS Flaws? · · Score: 3, Insightful

As long as end users are receiving messages like this this blaming the end user is still a bit of a stretch. What will really make a difference is when competition returns in full force to the operating system market. It took over a decade of the Big 3 auto makers making the automotive equivalent of a turd before the Japanese auto makers began to see large market gains, and the drivers didn't need to become mechanics in order to make that happen.

Suggesting that the end user, the same people that answer "Word" when you ask them where they saved their file, could offer meaningful programming suggestions isn't very practical. End users aren't programmers and beyond feature requests or UI suggestions I can't really see them offering much. I apologize to those that like more in depth car analogies. It's been a long day and I just couldn't bring myself to try harder.

There is a point in any products design possibilities that when reached makes the product very undesirable. Something that is bigger than a pda but too big to put into a pocket, smaller than a tablet but too small to have a practical screen, something as powerful as a laptop but without the convenience of a full size keyboard. I am one of those relics still addicted to the Palm products, I have a TX and for all intents and purposes it can do everything that I need to do when I need a quick mobile fix, otherwise I fire up the laptop for real work.

The author laments the fact that there are some enterprises that do not contribute to the community yet draw substantial benefit from that same community. This is the same problem we have with free speech in that many people will benefit from the fact that they can speak, and earn a living from that speach (read: Dvorak) yet only a smaller subset of those speaking are actually saying anything that edifies society or benefits it meaningfully. If the FLOSS community is going to espouse freedom then they'll have to suck it up that the leeches are free to use it.

This is a long time coming, and I'm excited about this but has anyone really considered that one of the benefits of mechanical storage is that the data can still be pretty easily recovered if the hdd isn't bootable any longer. $29.00 for a SpySweeper license

We're at $797.98 right now and we haven't done anything. Lets add a little more for the Ghost license etc if you want to image the machine.

Windows might be cheaper at it's most basic, the problem is that windows isn't much cheaper when one considers the additional stuff you need to purchase for it to be safe and functional.

To be fair, you would still need to purchase a cal for the Mac if you are going to connect to a Windows server.
