The reason i am considering a Mac for my next main computer is because i am sick of Windows with its patch-patch-patch.
Why would i want to boot XP if i am convinced to make a switch? I have always considered The Apple Computer Company as an icon to how computing should be done. Why do they want to go so commerical now.
Years ago i tried the dual and triple boot thing when "System Commander" first came out and made resizing partitions easy without having to reinstall anything. In one case i had 4 OS's on one machine; DOS6, W98, Redhat, and OS/2. Guess what...its too much work! So i agree with you, "get another box."
"America and the European Space Agency continue to spend billions of dollars exploring space dust"
Lets hope they don't bring back space dust that will melt our eyeballs from their sockets. Because no one can afford health insurance!
Who gives a shit where the dust came from? Who gives a shit if water existed on Mars?
I know *I* don't. But someone more important then me does! The project got financed.
"Do you really believe that America landed on the moon"

I could not agree more. The people that will pay for radio are generally sick of the bombardment of commercials we hear on radio and see on television. For the most part, they are an older crowd that listens to a broader range of music and are willing to pay to skip the commericals.
In addition to that, the music executives made the same argument in the 1970's when the cassette player/recorder became popular; and they made it again in the 80's when the "Reel to Reel" recorder for the home became affordable. Their claim then,(and seems to be now) that their sales would be impacted in a negative way. But, Guess what? Their industry grew despite the popularity of the home cassette recording devices (as well as reel to reel recording devices). In fact, I am sure many of the people that recorded their favorite songs on the radio latter went on to make a purchase. That would surly explain why they grew despite the claims of impacted profits.
IMHO the music industry makes a moot argument; except, in the case of those that want to record an entire CD to make bootleg copies for profit. But even then, the crooks can buy a CD and make copies and don't need to record off the airwaves. So preventing the home user from recording a few of their favorite songs, or, for that matter, preventing the the kid down the street from downloading his favorite rap-crap amounts to nothing more then greed.
The real reason record companies are loosing profit these days is because the artist has become smart, and they will no longer sign contracts where the labels get the majority of the profits.
In response to: "..animals with any intelligence, like apes and large monkeys"
Apes and large monkeys, as well as their offspring, do not spend their "imaginative time" making a choice to murdering or not to murder a prostitute in a video game like human offspring do.
Whats needed here is for the video game industry (and media as a whole)to police itself and show some restraint. Having Freedom of Speech does not mean having a right to permissive speech. The freedom of speech protections in the constitution can only work properly when they are grounded with some type of morial rule system that comes from the individual. Remove the morial value system and free speech becomes nothing more then permissive speech to the point that it infringes on others. When that happens, we get laws restricting activity; Then those laws are used as president to restrict more activity, and before ya know it we have no more freedom of speech.

Many of the poorly run organized religions of today have distorted the message of Jesus. Jesus and his good news was about God's Kingdom, and how we could be part of that kingdom.
Jesus never once endorced religion, as is proven by his contempt for the religious leaders of that time period.

I remain skeptical also. Forcing (or tricking) the body into having a specific chemical reaction could cause other reactions that may not be wanted. Then another drug would be needed to suppress that, and so on and so on. Which is good for drug profits, but not always good for the patient.
What has gone by the wayside in the last 100 years are natural herbs and plants used for cures. Plants have been used for thousands of years around the world with good success.
An example of a plant used to help the body heal itself would be 'Ginko Biloba'. Ginko has a well documented hisory (The AMA did a piece on ginko also)of increasing peripheral blood flow in the body, as well as increasing blood flow in and around the brain and eyes. And, it did it better then the drugs without side effects. Ginko has also slowed the progress of Alzheimer's Disease and when caught early enough halted it. Ginko has helped stroke patients recover faster.
Another herb that has been documented to relieve a diease is "Saw Palmetto" and "Nettle". These herbs naturally slow the hormone that causes some cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia not caused by bacteria.
I say skip tricking the body into health with man made chemicals and give the body what it needs to heal itself.

Monsanto and others try fool with mother nature. The problem is mother nature cannot be fooled or fooled with very long without dire results.
I think the approiate phrase that applies here, for those that try to trick mother nature, would be:
If the earth tumbles into a catastrophic state large enough to kill off vegitation as well as mankind, i am sure there will be no seed that will survive. But it sounds like a nice attempt to fool mother nature.
How does it work?
In the long run, it does not work. (see history of the Roman Empire)
Several presidents over several decades have tried without success to get something called a "line item veto". A line item veto would allow the president to veto specific lines that were added to a bill that have nothing to do with the original law proposed.
Why were these items added? Its works kinda like a game show called "Lets make a deal". I'll vote for your stuff if you vote for mine.
A Line Item Veto law would possibly stop to alot of pork belly spending, pet projects, and other assorted laws that the majority of Americans really do not want and do not have time to monitor being passed.
"...a set-top box to convert the signal should be all that's required, and hopefully the economy of scale should mean the boxes become pretty cheap."
Why should a handful of companies that support DTV be able to convince lawmakers that this is a necessary item for the American consumer; thereby, forcing them to buy a DTV, or, forcing them to purchase an add-on box to view television that they already can view without it?
The folks who want DTV and HDTV have every right to it. This is supose to be a "FREE MARKET" economy. What this is NOT not supose to be a "Forced Market" economy where laws can be passed to force consumers to make purchases.
Also, standard non-cable-non-wireless television is paid for by "private companies" via their advertising fees. In addition to that, "public television" is paid for by private donations.
So why should the sponsors of non-cable television, and why should the private donators to public television be forced to pay higher advertising costs and sponsor costs because public networks now have to purchase DHT equiptment?
This is such a transparent issue. The Dems's love this proposal because everyone in Europe has it. And the Republicans love it because it is "big buisness" orientated.
Whats the bottom line?
The folks that do not want DTV should not be forced to take it and they should not be forced to purchase additional electronics to use their existing televisions.
Who knows...
Next they will force people out of their homes so a new shopping centere or office building can be built!

DTV has its roots from line 21 EIA-708 closed captioning. Which is actually a left over from 1970's technology that has been reworked and reworked.
Many arguments on/. say DTV will free up airwaves for first responders. And it will. But why can't we find a new technology in communications for the first responders, and, create a new industry as well as jobs in the process. This issue was around long before the need for more airwaves. So that being connected to this issue is moot.
This issue goes beyond the arguments I have read on/. so far. The real issue is a handful of companies are allowed to persuade congress to basically force everyone in America to accept this technology.
IMHO this is the same as a few large businesses being able to force people to sell their homes to make way for progress.
Is progress needed? Yes. Do we need ram it down everyone else's throat? No. We do not have a land shortage in America, but we do have over crowed cities.
