The next closest major city is about 7 hours away.. and at around 350k people, it's not really "major". Now that i think about it, the closest big city is about 9 hours away, and it's not a Canadian city at all (Minneapolis).

That said, we've sure got a lot of fibre here. Our government has been pursuing an expansive and expensive project to network the entire country. I don't think WiFi will ever be part of the big picture here, largely due to the massive amounts of basically uninhabited country between our cities.

When i was a kid, i lived in the Yukon. Watching the lights was a near nightly occurance. To this day i swear you could hear them. I've read all over the place that they're not supposed to have any sort of sound that a human could hear - but if you ask anybody who's lived with them, they'll all tell you that sometimes, if it's just right, you can hear 'em.

I live further south now (still in Canada -- Winnipeg, to be precise), and we can still see the lights at least once a week, in the winter (if you leave the city).

If you *really* want to fully experience the lights, there's only one place to go - Churchill, MB, Canada. Why Churchill, you ask? As it turns out, it's almost right under the most active Aurora Borealis area on earth. They get visable activity there over 200 nights a year (as i recall - it's been a few years since i've been up there). Various governments around the world have a joint atmospheric studies lab up there, and there's a rocket-launching pad too. Did i mention polar bears?

Oh, hey, some links would probably be cool.

  12. C/AIM Web Style Guide on How Should Government Web Sites Be Designed? · · Score: 1

The Centre for Advanced Instructional Media at Yale has published a book in both online and paper form. It is entitled Web Style Guide, and has been an invaluble resource to me and my students (i'm an IT Technologies instructor).

It assumes you already have some understanding of many of the topics it covers (i.e. it's not a guide for rank newbies) - which is one of the things that makes it good. It covers everything from interface design, to information chunking, and beyond. Best part? Free.

What it isn't, is an HTML guide. You'll learn no HTML as a result of this manual. What it is, is a theoretical and conceptual (with practical examples and follow-through) look at what designing for the Web is all about.

I would definatly recommend that every web designer, or anybody who works with the web, give it a read. If you're interested in making a government website, you should find a lot of the manual speaks to the types of concerns you have.

I'm not sure if any of you who see it this way have actually ever *seen* the original Star Wars movies, but, they're full of humour. In fact, i'd sooner classify them as Sci-Fi Comedies than Action movies.

The 64k limit was (is) a popular barrier for graphical demos too, with an absolutly incredible amount of power crammed into each and every byte.
