actually you'll find VGChartz says PS2 has around 118 million PS2 owners. You're probably using the figures from the "Hardware Comparison" chart which doesn't contain Europe figures.
Anyway, when most people say "the PS3 is in exactly the same situation the PS2 was in" they fail to mention some pretty important differences:
The PS2 was released a year and a half earlier than its other main competitors (Not including the Dreamcast) and flew out of the gates, selling in Japan faster than Sony could produce (at a rate higher than the Wii) and subsequently at the US and European launches went on and did even better.
The PS3 released a year after one major competitor and at the same time as another, and after a quick start sales fell to record lows and stayed there for six months to make the PS3 launch faster than only the failed consoles. (doesn't even beat the PS2 Japan launch)
If you care about these things, the Xbox version is meant to have exclusive downloadable episodic content (for a fee, of course).
In terms of content, at least, the Xbox 360 version is better. In terms of how the game actually plays, well, no one will know until it comes out, obviously.
well I know vgcharts is a taboo word here, but they have Europe at 2.10 million Wiis currently with Australia making up a lousy 90k of those (we were never a Nintendo nation).
They appear to be the best (freely availably) tracking source for Europe, they had PS3 at.95 million when this announcement went out, and considering Sony is likely to overestimate, I think it's pretty decent.
I just built Linux From Scratch, and had very few issues with the compilation process (given, it was all spelled out)
I have also built a few packages from source for Ubuntu, to add patches, without much hassle. (although the dependencies are resolved automatically)
I will admit, however, that these cases the dependencies are solved automatically. But would it be too difficult to have automatic resolving of dependencies with distributions of source?
would it really be that much of a step for./configure && made && make install to be compiled into a nice little gui so that gradma can just double click the CD and have it compile (automatically installing any dependencies), install, and then run?
There is no reason why compiling from source should be any more difficult than installing, it's just that no one's gotten around to making a simple graphical compiler.
Although people might complain about why it takes 48 hours to install OpenOffice.org
wow I'm amazed that a homosexual would be welcomed more than an atheist... I suppose it shows that a larger portion of Christians are beginning to accept homosexuals... even more so than they accept athiests.
It'd be interesting to put up a 72 year old thrice-married atheist homosexual hispanic woman and see how they went;)
and do you think that they will still be running it and allowed to do what they want once Microsoft has domination of the gaming world?
At least the advantage of Gaming is that there is no real inertia, everyone starts at the same point every five years. If MS gains a monopoly its usual tactics won't keep it there.
Erm, this is a 3d game. So the main difference between Windows and Mac/Linux world is DirectX vs. OpenGL.
Putting out an OpenGL version of the game for mac means that porting to Linux from the mac version should be much more trivial than from Windows to Linux.
we had around the house somewhere a big wooden box that kind of looked like half a phone. It was an acoustic modem, and apparently you would put a telephone on top and it would just play through the reciever. No idea how fast it was but it must have been damn annoying.
Linux isn't my favorite OS, and it's admittedly a young man's attempt at ripping off Hurd, not Windows NT. Yes, the GUI of Linux is ripped off of Windows, but that was ripped off of Mac anyway (which in turn was an improvement on Xerox).
heh, gotta love that spin.
Linux "Rips off" Windows Windows "Rips off" Mac OS Mac OS "Improves upon" Xerox
Aww, that's so cute. Feint praise. Never seen someone use that on the Net!
Who the hell are claiming that the graphics are what make the game so good. The amazing level tools and very rich physics/dynamics engine are what everyone is talking about. The graphics are just icing on the cake.
Dude, you need to work on your reading comprehension. Try reading this thread from the beginning. Anonymous Sony Fanboy says:
That's what I suspected, just another console fanboy trying to downplay something incredible because it's not on their system.
Grow up guy.
I've been to many GDCs over the years and I've seen many demos of new games or tech. There has never been a reaction to a game from developers like there was at GDC in all the years I have attended.
Feel free to share with us what you think the structure of LBP's engine and specifically lighting model is in broad terms on the system. You clearly know more than most of the gaming world's best developers. Right?
So allow me to put it in terms than even an Anonymous Coward could understand:
ASF says: zomg graphics on LBP great! developers are going nuts Rycross says: no, developers were going nuts about the physics and user created content in LBP, not the graphics. ASF says: zomg you dumbass nin fanbot!! everybody loves LBP, they were going nuts!!!1one you are stupid! Sony + LBP FTW! Rycross says: the developers were going crazy over the gameplay, not the graphics you say: nobody said the developers were going crazy over the graphics! The game's about user created content and physics! dumbass
Of course, you could have been trying to back up Rycross, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.
yeah it's a shame Bungie couldn't come up with a Resistance killer. Oh wait, if Halo 3 flops (half the sales of original Halo) it will still have sold twice as many copies as Resistance.
Oh sorry, Anonymous Sony Fanboy Coward, I didn't meant to ruin your dreams of Sony world domination. I'm sure Bungie is going to run back to the drawing board after you told them how Halo is going to fail as a Resistance killer. Oh wait, wasn't Resistance supposed to be a Halo killer? Or is that for Killzone?
"The word you is after"?
How's that glass house treating you?
both games will be identical content wise, with the exception of the 360 containing downloadable content

that's all you have to offer?
Why not change the definition of "Australian"?
or the definition of "Available"
or "2009"
or "99%"
well I know vgcharts is a taboo word here, but they have Europe at 2.10 million Wiis currently with Australia making up a lousy 90k of those (we were never a Nintendo nation).

now if only we could download some of those titles here in Australia.
I am sick of getting shafted for no reason by Nintendo

second greatest?
you mean after the moon landing? =)

apparently it's only region free for HD, ie, you can't play a PAL game on an NTSC console
r ee-but-theres-a-hi-def-catch/
http://www.joystiq.com/2007/05/07/ps3-is-region-f
just something to keep in mind if you don't have a HDTV

Then play those games. They exist.
They are not Starcraft.

Of course, that was before my time.
but imperial units don't have prefixes.
so it would be 12 throngs to a bould (US bould, a british bould is 16 throngs). and 3 boulds to a data-furlong
of course it doesn't, because your home PC has more than enough power to run 2 applications.
When you run 200,000 applications, or 400,000 applications, you will notice a difference.
didn't someone at Nintendo say that Twilight princess would be the last Zelda of its kind way back before it was released?
if the number of transactions doubld, you would need more infrastructure to deal with hit
hence a correlation
heh, gotta love that spin.
Linux "Rips off" Windows
Windows "Rips off" Mac OS
Mac OS "Improves upon" Xerox
but he didn't! He signed himself off as "Nick"
should be easy enough to find
