Obviously you're not aware that the British brutally controlled the whole of india for a long long time, and with less than 20,000 soldiers. that's a country of close to a billion people controlled by 20,000.
one question for you, do you think that by apple making money from helping to take away the human rights of people then they are strengthening "our own freedoms" as you put it, and thus, down the line giving us more of chance of helping them should they decide they do want to be free? how far would you go with this? just how flexible is your moral compass?
also, your point of view is pretty convenient for big business isn't it - would it surprise you to know that your belief is an echo of one put forward by Rupert Murdoch a few years back...? someone who clearly believes that the needs of big business are more far important than freedom or democracy.
They may not be developed in the same way that many other nations clearly are - e.g. third world, but the economy up to very recently has been predominantly agrarian. When i started working with some Chinese programmers in the UK a few years back, i was quite surprised to find that all their parents were peasants. From growing rice to writing code for Gentoo in one generation.
The other thing that surprised me was that none of them had brothers or sisters - govt policy on population control ensured that even the concept was a bit strange to them.
However much they're come along, it's worth remembering that the companies behind the train and associated technology are not Chinese - old European companies have done the business there.
wow that's scary - pretty much what i suspected google's postition on privacy was, but to hear it out loud is amazing nonetheless. i've a feeling he's gonna regret that comment but its good to know where we stand.
for the last few years i've been using http://www.scroogle.org/scraper.html and would recommend it to anyone. i've been accused of tilting at windmills in the past, but i guess i can live with that, especially now that he's made his position quite clear.
you have to be joking right? - either that or maybe you should move over to the story about a certain type of person testing software for large companies..? i reckon you could shed some light on the matter.
"If you don't like racism then you should start by treating all races identically." This is crucial to the debate actually, and mistaken if you ask me.
I've always thought that the best way to deal with racism is to encourage the idea that you should respect differences and not ignore them. You might even feel that you would want to celebrate diversity, rather than use color as a reason to divide and spread hatred amongst people. In my experience that works quite well.
Racism is a bit like a virus and it can spread very quickly in the fertile grounds of economic hardship and ignorance; I would argue that it needs to be actively fought against. Images portraying black people as apes clearly have a racist dimension and are designed to further the cause of race hatred. In my opinion that's why they should be restricted.
To be honest - this game looks great. If it has the graphics of Oblivion and the depth of BG2, then it should be the best game in a long long time. Long overdue, even without the big guy.
Yes the Flynn effect is quite an interesting aspect of IQ - it would seem to suggest an environmental rather than a genetic basis for IQ.
I've always thought that IQ owes more to ideology than science, so it makes sense to find the evidence is against it. That IQ survives as an idea is worthy of investigation but as far as i'm concerned its pure pseudoscience.
Sure, there might be a lot of academic psychologists who still take it seriously... but there are also academic psychologists who are busy in their departments measuring peoples heads.
very true. have a look at the recent success of flash games. unlike consoles they benefit from the intelligence and creativity of the pool of homegrown talent out in the wild and unlike consoles they're doing increasing well.
pc games did show signs of encouraging the great user generated content that appeared, but the move towards consoles obviously hasn't helped here.
as far as games are concerned, where people don't have products shoved down their throats by the marketing and hardware restrictions of big companies, they will go elsewhere.
i would argue that the same thing happened in music.
the notion that big firms and corporations can cash in on the creative process seems to be dying out in a lot of ways. the application of business principles and the accompanying contempt they have for both the artist and the consumer is most unwelcome, and above all - it just doesn't work anymore. it produces something that people don't want.
crysis, kylie, terminator 7: as far as i'm concerned they can all go back from whence they came.
Armed Assault was a huge disappointment to me - flawed in numerious ways and completely lacking the genius of the original - OFP.
Armed Assault II has been received coolly - and apparently it crashes a great deal -
as for the drm ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARMA_2#Copy_Protection ) i'm happy with the one rootkit i have installed thanks. i just can't be bothered with pc games anymore - and it seems that most of the games companies feel the same way.
OFP is a another good example of a ground breaking pc game that was never built upon - apart from the player community that created brilliant maps and vehicles aplenty. Totally open and open-ended game.
it's funny you should say that because rts is one of the areas i am hoping will take off in flash games- red alert is probably the pinnacle of pc gaming imho. who can argue with a 30ft tesla coil?:)
apart from world of warcraft, i think its pretty damm clear that pc gaming is dying.
for me the reason why is that lame gameplay and lame game design is sounding the death knell. the bigger the industry gets the less room there is for creativity. even if the games were decent the drm has pissed me off enough that i'll not buy another pc game.
also, companies are content to push people onto the consoles, which are easier to develop for (despite direct x) and make a lot more money.
having said that console sales are not great either.
the only really promising area for me is flash browser games. their growth is extraordinary - especially over the last year or two. imo the main reason is that they're home-grown and have the kind of innovation and intelligence that used to fuel games such as Doom & GTA.
as they appear on more and more devices and the back-end becomes a bit more sophisticated then the possibilities open up.
its strange what people consider offensive, especially if you look back into history a bit.
i don't know that much about the circumstances but my great uncle was one of the last people in the uk to be charged with the crime of 'racist dancing.' i could never get a clear explanation of what this entailed but there ya go.
it is arguable that the whole point of flash is its ubiquity and the ease with which it can be installed. compare/contrast with java fx and silverlight, which are both a lot more troublesome than flash in both respects.
hardware acceleration is great, (who would argue against it), but if it compromises these aspects of the flash plugin then that might be seen as a bad move.
with flash 10, pixel bender can be used to offload a certain amount of work to a gpu but its not ideal. something that adobe are working on no doubt.
your having problems with logic here but its quite simple, let me help you a bit.
for most people flash is a very good thing, for idiot zealots like you it isn't. flash continues to spread and grow in power.
the increasingly shrill voices of those like you
if you're stupid enough to buy a phone that drops 1/5 of all calls in nyc then they deserve what they get - a walled garden that nobody with half a brain would want to be in.
you just wait for html 5 with svg wundershow extensions/sarcasm.
Every study that has been conducted in a genuinely scientific spirit has found that there are no real differences between racial groups in terms of the ability to benefit from education.
This can be seen in the fact that the differences between racial groups are much smaller than the differences within those groups.
In other words, humans are in fact equal in terms of their race.
As for evolution, it has nothing to do with this issue. Evolution is a slow sifting of gene pools until the whole population is better suited to its environment. The type of extrapolation of natural selection to society represented by Social Darwinism and other right wing ideas. is a crude ideological justification of laissez-faire economics and eugenics. It has very little to do with science.
The controls weren't really that much of a problem for Goldeneye because the pace of the game was such that you didn't need the kind of responsiveness that a mouse/keyboard offered. e.g. sniping - you could still pick off a sizable bunch of guards from miles away (with indecent haste)
The other weakness as compared to pc lan offerings was that you could see what the opponent was up to, on their half of the screen - but this was never too much of an advantage - and using it was very much a part of the game
Imho it would be pretty hard to overestimate the significance of the game. everything was so balanced and well thought out that the player had scope to be as fiendish or clever as they like.
For the joy of proximity mines alone it deserves to be remembered.

"True technology... [that] works today." In almost every respect it's a blatant sham. I've seen far more credible performances from the likes of Uri Geller. Say sorry Peter, like you mean it!
In one way its nice to see that Peter is settling in nicely to the Microsoft marketing team.
you're too right. he is the last thing that the environmental movement needs.
imo he was at his funniest a few months back when he stated (with a straight face) that if he wasn't allowed to comment on architecture, education etc. then he might as well just go on skiing holidays all the time. priceless.
by the time brenda gives up the throne, all the wind will be gone from his sails and his shrill protestations will have hushed (hopefully)
one gets the impression that she will hang on like grim death to help ensure this is the case; if the the monarchy is to survive then it doesn't need a berk like that at the helm.
The thing was tough and light enough to carry around. Quiet as a peep as well, it was. Originally designed by Compaq i think. Why it was dropped I'll never know - deep sigh.

something like commandos 2 would be well suited to a flash version as well - the little thief was a classic - "going zere..."

And cheers for the glimpse of the future with Natal, but i already saw Peter Molyneux showing off his, ahem, "demo" of Milo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPIbGnBQcJY

Yes indeed, I will vouch for the TC1100 - a futuristic yet very well-made gadget.
Turned up in lots of movies - and looked every bit the part http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tc1100#Appearances_in_Popular_Culture
