  1. A sliver of a decent idea on Berners-Lee Wants Truth Ratings For Websites · · Score: 1

It would only take seconds for partisans to slam Fox and CNN as untrue so the idea simply won't work. However, if someone were to create a domain similar to wikipedia that was well regulated and comprised of science and history information known to be authoritarian (or marked that there is debate on the subject) it might do us all a world of good. Wikipedia is great for topics that are not contested (history of the Hundred years war for example) at all but it's censorship-hell for anything that someone might disagree about (politics). Such a site could post science papers and request to repost other stuff of interest and if done properly even the contested stuff could have rational discourse and thus provide useful information.

  5. Pelosi is the problem on House Dems Turn Out the Lights On the GOP · · Score: 1

The thing is the country is looking for any solutions, even feel good ones that won't help much. The Dems have shown an unwillingness to debate the issue, they will easily be painted as the cause of a lot of problems and as beholden to the environmentalist movement at the expense of the average American. The ads write themselves, a shot of a recognizable Dem on vacation, a shot of Republicans demanding to debate the issue, a shot of an oil price sign. Pelosi should not have allowed herself to be so easily maneuvered and she should be replaced. She should have been replaced long ago when the Congress hit an all time low after the Dems took over. The Congress ratings may have no connection with who is running the thing but that is the perception and in an election year. Not throwing her under the bus was foolish. If anything is gonna slow the Democrat juggernaut this year it will be Nancy's inept leadership of the House.

  8. Better to use it as a gas station wharehouse on Send the ISS To the Moon · · Score: 1

I just don't think you retask space equipment like that. The stresses involved from acceleration/deceleration, even if the thruster were attached to the trusses would probably cause all sorts of havoc. A better idea is to make it into a gas station/wharehouse. Put a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transhab transhab up there decked out for room and storage. Then use the shuttle (or the Russians or private space companies) to bring up large quantities of water or fuel or other supplies. Then when the mission goes up they can resupply in orbit and won't have to take everything with them from the ground on one trip. You could even send the astronauts separately in a known and tested vehicle so the Aries wouldn't need to be man-rated for the launch itself. That would save time and money.

  9. Using the heat on Efficiency? Think Racing Cars, Not Hybrids · · Score: 1

I heard recently (in the Skeptoid podcast) about an engine with extra pistons that captures the heat generated from the normal pistons and uses that heat to get another stroke or two. This uses the waste heat so that heavy radiators and cooling systems aren't required and also gives you a bit of extra energy for the same amount of fuel. That is the kind of thing we should be considering. All that engine heat is just wasted energy. There has to be ways to recoup that energy. Using a radiator just seems wrong.

  10. Looking at the issue backwards on Do the Blind Deserve More Effort on the Web? · · Score: 1

A browser is a tool that reads the code and delivers it visually for the sited reader. What is needed is a browser specifically designed to read that same code and deliver the content audibly for the reader. You don't need to redesign the web and force every webpage to comply, beyond some kind of tag for images that is. Most images could have a simple (unnecessary image) as the tag to tell the blind boy browser that the image is not required to understand the page. In fact that could be the default for most images. Whomever managed to come up with such a browser would probably make a bit of money as Microsoft and Apple would both want to bundle such a browser to show what good people they are.

  12. The problem with the Taliban in a nutshell on Taliban Demands Downtime on Afghanistan Cellphone Networks · · Score: 1

Instead of telling Taliban members not to use their cell phones they try to shut down the towers so using them is impossible. Instead of telling men not to molest women they force the women into burqas to shut down any desire the men might have. To me God or Allah would be more impressed by someone who avoids sin in Vegas (hard, temptation everywhere) than one who avoids sin in Salt Lake City (easy, no temptation to be found). The Taliban knows they will fail the self control test so they remove the options that tempt them. They are losers.

Moving icons and folders around or nesting them all in humorously named folders. Changing the .openwin menu title to something really long so when they right clicked they got a massive window. Of course it was UNIX but most of this could be duplicated elsewhere if you caught someone with their system unattended. Of course the best is if you've got time to do them all. They will notice the beeps and flashes and things and be sure not to leave their system unattended again so upon reboot they'll generally be mystified by the giant clocks which were not obvious before.
