I work for a large consumer products company, and our sector is pretty competitive. If the marketers would come over to IT and see us using competitors products, they'd be pretty pissed. We're all part of one team, and sticking to our products is important to us. I think that's one reason why we're successful. We do have competitors products on our desks / shelves but only to learn from / motivate us to gain more share. I have a hard time using products from our competitors... even in segments that we don't compete in... who wants to give the enemy more ammo?
And that attitude works on a large scale too... one of my company's founders said this about 80 years ago:
"When all is said and done, this business is nothing but a symbol. And when we translate this, we find that it means a great many people think well of its products, and that a great multitude has faith in the integrity of the men who make this product.
"In a very short time, the machines that are now so lively will soon become obsolete. And the big buildings, for all their solidity, must some day be replaced.
"But a business which symbolizes can live so long as there are human beings alive. For it is not built of such flimsy materials as steel and concrete; it is built of human opinions, which may be made to live forever.
"The goodwill of the people is the only enduring thing in any business. It is the sole substance... the rest is shadow."
They take care of us, and we do our best to make the company successful.
Wow, sounds like you've added some great functionality. Interesting read.
I have a T1i- the little brother to the 5d Mark II. Any thought on firmware for this model?
Aside from not being full frame, it also only does 1080P video @ 20FPS... I understand that it *can* do 30 but Canon crippled it as to not encroach on the 5D market. Has anyone seen any "updated" firmware to crank the frames for the T1i?:)
You'd be amazed how many people play WoW, Counter-Strike, and a host of other network games in Iraq. The internet is such a big morale booster over there. Nearly every American base I've visited has free (govt. sponsored) Internet connections for troops that include web cams, microphones, and IMs. The pay Internet (AT&T Cyber Cafes) have everything else... pre-loaded games, cams, and access to many other things the govt. doesn't want to worry about. Everytime I went in there to download my e-mail (Yes! They had laptop cubes/ connections! ($5/hour)) there were no less than 5 people playing WoW.
For those people that lived/worked on Iraqi bases the Internet connections there were pretty much unmonitored/unfiltered and allowed everything through.
I also have to say I've seen Morale network drives too... When I was there last summer the music directory was 195gb and the movies and videos topped 300gb... this is on a NIPR military LAN too. I think the leadership looked the other way 'til the filesever blew up December. I don't know if it exists anymore.
Sorry, I couldn't disagree more. The coalition is here to rebuild Iraq's military and police force... that exactly my job here. The 'terps want Iraq to be a strong, self sufficient country and they see what we're doing is making a difference. They thank us for being here... and they're not even getting paid that much. 90% of them are college graduates, and instead of trying for a more "civilian" job, they're out here in the shit with us.
I'm stationed in central Iraq, and think this software would be great as a backup tool. I've never used this hardware, so I can't comment on how well it really works.
At the moment, I'd stick with my Iraqi 'terps for day to day operations. I have 9 working for me now, I trust all of them. Typically they're screened by a US Company, and are pretty smart guys who love their country.
Where they prove to be extra valuable is when they use their "Arab-sense". They can tell where people are from by the way they talk, or look. They know the difference between Iraqi and Syrian Arabic... and even between cities in Iraq. They're great at defusing situations, and act as my eyes and ears when working with locals/Iraqi soldiers. They are also able communicate my intent without directly translating my words. Sometimes a direct translation isn't the best way to go, as it can be confusing. If needed, they can further clarify what I'm trying to convey. That's why I like to call them my 'terps, instead of translators. Strict translation may be OK in certain situations, but when you're in a hot situation having someone interpret can be necessary.
From what I understand, if Valve suddenly decided to stop making games, and get into ranching or something, they could very easily "turn off" any steam authentication.
I think steam is a great thing... automatic updates, and more $$$ for the developers, not the stinkin' publishers.
OK, so you're not just a gun-nut, you're also paranoid.
By your comments it seems as if you take your pistol everywhere. I don't see the necessity in that... and just doing it because you can isn't a very good argument. Do you keep a loaded gun under your pillow as well? I don't think I'd want to live in a place where every unbalanced redneck-tinfoilhat-wearing imbecile is carrying a weapon. There's nothing wrong with owning them, but if everyone was carrying it would be a scary place. Check into what the vast majority of police organizations think of concealed weapons... are they "pinko pussy communist(s)"? too?
Oh, and if I thought you didn't have 5 guns crammed down your crotch (to simulate a normal-sized penis) and one up your ass, I probably would tell you that.
I manage a second level support group at a fairly large company. We've found that On-Track's Easy Recovery Professional is AWESOME. It fixes 200-some file extensions. All office suite files, zips, etc. We used it a lot on enormous PST files that would blow up at 2gb~. It fixes them in half the time of M$'s ScanPST tool.
Further, this product will do all sorts of HDD checks, and can does great file recovery. It's saved our asses a bunch of times. Just take a read.
It might seem kind-of expensive to someone on their own, but not to a mid-sized company. It's worth it's weight to me. They do have different licensing options and offer different/lighter versions of the product for less $$$.
The sucky thing about it's licensing scheme is that it's based on how many drives you run it on.
I've also heard that wininternals has an great product but if I remember correctly it was really expensive.
We see this all the time. I'm a company commander of a BCT Company (in the summer) and maybe 5~ of 220 kids have this problem. Most of the time the headaches are so bad they get kicked out. Otherwise they get 800mg Ibuprofen "horse pills", and tough it out.
Typically, they're drinking 5-10 cans of soda / cups of coffee a day before they show up. It takes about 2 weeks for them to get back to "normal".
I've heard Tolkien originally wanted the three series into one large book. The title of this submission "The Trilogy as One" got me thinking. I wonder if they'll splice all three movies together when the next generation DVD comes out. Then you could take it all in as JRR intended. Sure, it'd be a marathon... but I think lots of geeks would dig it.
Tell that to R2D2. :(
This. 1000 times this.
Not all the time, but I think about it... often times there is no alternative... Nearly all of my companies products are made in my country.

Bottled moon water. :)

I was sure there would have been a yojoe tag by now. ;)
The boots! No wait, the cape!
;)
Whoops - I got this discussion confused with the poll.
Too similar!

In case you were looking, here's the device.
Have fun with your self-styled "security experts" at work!
Here's an update from Valve on that issue, looks like it should be fixed today or tomorrow:

At any rate, now I can get my one share framed! I like to keep all my favorite tech company's stock certificates on my computer lab wall. :)
And it's running windows. :) I wonder long long your server can take a pounding with that large image on there!
(Good luck!)

Fuck-off.
What's going on there? Why would there be multiple guns (loaded?!?!) at a LAN party?
You sound like a class-A psycho gun-nut.
Reloaded! :)

The pr0n button! Why wade through all those annoying popups?
