I just wanted to chime in and say that Dell offers VERY nice screens for laptops. They were one of the first to offer 1600 by 1200 on a laptop, and the viewing angles and black points are suprisingly good. Other laptop manufacturers out there have interesting hardware that not everybody else sells. (I recall that Saeger had laptops with two optical drives.. that's kinda neat, at least for some people.) For some people, it's just not as simple as "go find another retailer". They all cut corners in different places to keep the costs down. Some of those corners are very important to people.

"As for porn, I cannot BELIEVE that people on /. are advocating restricting porn to people you would allow violent video games too."

The reason for this incongruity is that teen pregnancy happens far more often than teen murder. In other words: Parents remember how they spent their youth and don't want their kids making stupid mistakes. They think that by being bombarded with porn they'll run out and try to 'score', ignoring the risk of tying up the next 18 years of their lives.

Whether they're right about that or not is a seperate discussion. I'm just pointing out why sex is far more taboo than violence.

"As long as you continue to confuse a kernel with a full operating system, then you don't even hold a credible opinion either on the matter of the adoption of Free Software: you don't even know what you're talking about!"

Considering how common it is to use Linux as an umbrella term to describe various distributions ("Microsoft's evil! Everybody should swith to Linux!") then a lot of the noisy people don't have a credible opinion, either. You've supported his point. It's hard to believe people who have dedicated so much of their energy to fighting an entity that they blindly prescribe a different OS without any objectivity that would give them pause for thought.

Microsoft may be out to get you, but you shouldn't perjure yourself to get people to move away from them. All it would take to sour somebody's opinion of Linux (excuse me, I mean Ubuntu) is for them to have a few 'dammit' moments when they try to get their games or wireless drivers to work. Who knows how long it'd be before they gave it another shot after that.

I dunno if I'd derive too many conclusions from the return policies of stores. This all happened around Christmas time and if it's one thing retailers won't do, it's give a lot of shit to customers during the holidays. I remember a couple of years ago game retailers were allowing returns of games little Johnny just plain didn't enjoy. Can't do that any other time of year.

Put Wii sports on any other console and 'ho-hum' is the best they'd generate. I'm personally satisfied with the "whole new way to play games we haven't experienced" declaration.

I'm not saying the Craigs List community was wrong (or right, for that matter), I'm just having trouble with this argument you've put forth.
