Why yes, it has been almost 10 years since I had anything to do with AOL! You can still get unlimited access much cheaper, in the $9 to $14 a month range no matter where you are.
If they were smart enough to set up a P2P client, they'd be smart enough not to pay $25/month for a slow dial-up connection. When you're bandwidth limited, constantly being kicked off, and paying by the hour, it probably doesn't make much sense to run Kazaa, does it?
One of my neighbors has been fooling enough to set up a wireless router with no encryption. If I now run P2P software through his cable connection, can he be sued by the RIAA? Is "gee, I'm stupid enough to leave my cable connection wide open so anybody can use it" and affirmative defense?
Best way to be perceived as cool: make products that don't suck. Assuming that marketing and product placement can substitute for quality is extremely insulting to your target audience! You're not selling to teenage kids, you are selling to businesses -- marketing your product like Coke or Nike simply isn't going to work!
Why not just invest in a CD-Burner, have 20-30 students chip in for a CD and make copies for everybody? Cost you ~$1 per CD (or less with more participants)... what's your time worth?
I was wondering where Kevin Kelly got the money to buy all these toys... until I saw his recommendation for the book "Revolution in Cannabis - State of the art in pot usage." That explains a lot...
Last time I checked, the Wind River toolchain I was using (Tornado) was built on top of gcc and gdb. So they added a GUI wrapper to it -- so what? It's still THE SAME tool chain you get for free with any embedded Linux!
- Congressmen having the same retirement plan and health care as the rest of us, not having reserved parking for them at the airport, having to pay for all the mail they send, having the same bank accounts as everyone else, having to work the same hours as low level federal employees, etc., etc.
Imagine the embarrassment of calling somebody up at dinner time and being told "I'm the president of the Direct Marketing Association, so I know all about your fradulent tactics and worthless merchandise, so you're certainly not going to get even a penny out of me!" Better to after suckers that have never heard of direct marketing instead, don't you think?
They can't kill the GPL and have a surviving product line. Does anyone seriously think that SCO has _any_ intention of having a product line when this is all over? Who in their right mind is going to sign a contract with these blood-suckers? There's only so much profit you can make out of selling software to people already locked up in mental institutions...
HP can get away with it because they haven't been targeted and probably won't be before the thing is over. HP is also sponsoring the "SCO Road Trip", although they appear a bit reluctant to let everybody know that... I wonder why?
Uh, the 2-year old survived for 3 weeks by eating dry pasta, mustard and ketchup until her father demanded entry into the apartment. Yes, it was extremely upsetting to me too, as I have a 2-year old. And I do hope my 2-year is as well-equipped to survive.
The money came out of his commission. In fact, he would have been screwed if I had not remained on the new job for at least a month, as he would not have gotten his commission, and would have had no way of getting his cash back. Unfortunately, that's not how I operate...
By the way, the company that I quit after a couple weeks was The Complete PC. During those two weeks the guy that hired me resigned -- leaving me to wonder if there might be some problems there. Where are they now?
Today, I was watching something called the "Home Shopping Network", and the amount of product placement was truely appalling! Really! The government needs to do something about this!
outlawing product placement would also drive all travel shows off the air, as well as monster house, monster garage, all game shows, all shows set in an obvious city (like Las Vegas), etc. Seriously, where do you draw the line?
[Suddenly realizing I forgot to click Post Anonymously] Well, I certainly declared it as income on my income tax forms, and certainly didn't spend a cent of it on illegal intoxicants (or even legal intoxicants) or women of negligable or negotiable virtue, that's for sure!

Does Kazaa even work behind a firewall doing NAT? It seems like all incoming connections would be blocked...
I think you mean Eve Troutt Powell

I assume then, that they're doing digital distribution, to get around the prohibitively high cost of producing a film print for all those theaters?

how 'bout shoes that can detect someone is trying to light a fuse stuck into them?
Where every team has to have one employee whose sole job is to talk to the computer!
I believe the Windows(TM) bug database is fast approaching that size...

That's waves at me, sticks out it's hand, says "pay up, sucker!" then tells me where I want to go today...
It's called "applause". If you don't hear any, then the show sucks...
