I don't think it is fair to say it is bad that he can't be bothered with learning a new OS. He is a journalist, not an IT professional. He gets paid for writing, not for troubleshooting computers. So what if his idea of a good time isnt tweaking his config files to get his new distro working? This does not make him a bad person.
Linux distros to this point just are not as intuitive. Rank and file users should not have to manually edit config files to get their computer working. MS has done a pretty good job making it so that users with fairly regular hardware can just plop in the windows cd and crank it up. I even consider myself fairly tech savvy, and I have never installed a distro on my box that doesnt take alot of work to get my AC97 sound card working. I dont know why, since its generic/onboard, but it is at least a three hour ordeal every time. Mom and Dad just are not going to put up with that, and will be more than happy to get Uncle Bill to solve their problem.
Moreover, it would be an unathorized attempt to access classified information, a.k.a. spying. Whether or not it should be classified (if it even exists) is a debate for another time.
Anyone who says this is a cookie cutter series clearly never liked playing Street Fighter / MK / Tekken / etc. when they were younger (or even now).
I say more power to Square for finding something that at least many people think is great. Thats more productive than curmudgeioning (sp?) on Slashdot will ever be.
See- that is the rub. When I heard about the company, I emailed their techs a few times to learn about the project. I decided not to use them simply because I feared this type of event, and didnt want my email box doomed to this kind of fate. Good thing they saved my email address for later use.
Yeah, I got boatloads of emails saying that I shoudl withdraw my subscription to Blue Security. I have never used them, but apparantly I am in the bad boat now.
Good to know Blue is doing so much to protect us from the spammers.... especially letting an email list be leaked such that it can be used against their community.
But remember, I has never been done successfully before, so it will never be done successfully in the future! If the luddites had their way, Linux would stop fighting MS for market share...
That's a good choice, but that's a PDA, not a phone. I personally wouldn't do a PDA since its 1) too big, 2) too expensive, and 3) too likely that my business will come home with me.
I have a Razr. I got mine on release day, so i got the.02 firmware, which is OBEX and other BT services enabled. Apparantly Verizon is backing off on their anti-BT stance with their latest phones, but I would still warn you to try out a phone and see if you can connect from your lappie first.
That said, I love my Razr, and I have used BT to sync it as a 'modem' and called into my work VPN dail up service. Not very high-tech, I know, but I cannot yet afford the monthly for wireless internet.
I don't know how much the wow factor plays into your buying decision, but I definitly got my phone for coverage (VZW is best in SE VA), usefulness, and looks (omg! ponies?) Samsung has some new EVDO phones over on Sprint's service that look pretty good and are supposed to be a lot more geek friendly. Hope this helps.
You, sir, fear no flame. I agree with you, but the audience will hate it. My bottom is still recovering from the last time I said sports may indeed have more benefits than videogames.
He forgot the most important group: Parents that cannot say 'No' to their kids. Hence, you price it at their limit to maximize profit over the Christmas season.
i remember seeing a tutorial out there on how to add firefox and a few other programs to autoinstall during a windwos install a year or so ago. sorry to say i do not still have the link saved, but i found it on google. happy surfing.
From TFA:For legal reasons, I cannot go into details about exactly what happened. Suffice it to say that betrayal of trust, theft, and embezzlement has inflicted what we estimate to be $850,000 to 1.3 million dollars in damages to Palladium.
It is a blow from which Palladium cannot recover. At least, not without YOUR help.
This sounds a little more like 'we are seriously going out of business' than the local furniture store sale.
Due to a severe case of Jet lag after visiting Japan, I found myself primarily playing with Japanese players back when i played FFXI. I can't speak Japanese other than ordering food and finding the lav, but using the auto translator I was able to get along well enough. Given, it still required the first two keystrokes to get by, I am sure there is a way around that.
That said, I still don't think a portable MMO is worthwhile, since the only time I am on the move for that long at once is on road trips... which would require EVDO or similar uses to work. Maybe eventually, but not yet...
I think you miss the point. I was trying to illustrate that the definition was incomplete... football falls into his criterion, but i think it has little intrinsic artistic value. Just because an object/activity involves those three elements, it is not automatically art.
Are sports art then? They require creativity to outwit the opponent, a logical approach to scoring, and certainly more reflexes than a videogame. Oh, but the slashdot community doesnt hold sports int he bottom of their hearts, so I suppose they must not be art.
I am not saying videogames cannot be art, but your definition is lacking.
I have a feeling if the debate were over something the slashdot community did not hold so dear as their controllers, that the debate would be more towards the middle. Pick a random profession that not many of us are involved in: interior decorating. Certainly it has alot of the nature of art, and takes an artistic vision. But i wouldn't call knowing where to put the couch art.
However, if anyone decided that our blessed videogames are not art, gad- get the torches and pitchforks. I think the distinction needs to be made between what is artistic and what is fine art. I find the design of a late '60s stingray to be quite artistic, but i wouldn't compare it to a fine painting.
So, come on guys... we're not gonna protest? Were not gonna protest! Were not gonna protest! Gutter is a...
I don't think its a moot debate. Would you call the game 'Sorry!' art?
It has colors, movents, forms, and arguably sounds (as I have yet to play an overlapping round of 'the silent game' with my niece while playing). I would certainly call it entertaining (especially if the power is out) but I would never assume it is art. Video games are hard to charachterize because they imbue both the qualities of a game and that of television.
The core of this debate revolves around what is indeed art. For me, most modern art (the kind where they glue together a blender, a broom, and a trash can and call it 'Hollywood') is not art, its a way to get broken crap out of your apartment. Modern sculpture is different, for me. Due to its subjective nature, one can really only speak for their personal kingdom... for me, that is confined to the squiggly gray thing between my ears. That said, I would be much more inclined to look at Myst or an RPG as art, where i would see a shooter like Unreal as more of a simulation (of non-reality). And you are entitled to your opinion. I encourage you to take down all the paintings in your dwelling and replace them with close-ups of Lara Croft's 'shading'.

I thought this was a fluff piece, and not about real science.

Well, we know it has linux (or bsd) somewhere in there... but I don't know if it will run it overtly.
DRTFA
Yeah. I emailed their techs twice to ask some questions, but decided not to use the software to avoid exactly this. Good thing they saved my email.

I would imagine it is so we have a presence there in case they try any thing squirrly like back in the JFK days.

That would be good, although I rue the day that the 'annoying kid who leans the way he is steering in the racing game' becomes any better due to this.
