My problem with HP consumer stuff, was the abismal quality. A desktop failure was expected about 6 months to one year after the warantee expired. And also, replacement part (power supply or mother board), were non-standard, meaning that one had to visit HP for a replacement. Even their wireless mouse failed within a year.
If a company skimps on quality, the customer flees that brand and also recommends other brands. I have a pile of failed HP desktops.
I taught pure and applied Calc and Diff Equations at a smaller university. We were 3 profs for the same subject. My students did not have rich benefactors; some were bright students from other countries. Groups of 4 foreign students rented an apartment, to share the costs. These students were appreciative of my not obliging them to buy the official book. In fact, they shared the one book, and worked together (synergism). It was one of the few years in the history of the university that a math class had every student passing with a good understanding of the two subjects. And, I am willing to bet that after the course, each of my students from that class could teach the two subjects to others. At the end of the year I left that city to return to my home town to get married. I called it the year of three successes.
Regarding keyboards, I took some crazy glue and put a dot of glue on the F and the J keys. That elevated dot on each key works to allow my fingers to find the home keys.
As any computer systems engineer knows, it's all about compute and storage. This article is about compute. But storage has been vastly improved for all of us. We now store or keep knowledge on the Internet instead of keeping it in our heads. The access time of this storage is very fast, too, compared to paper files and libraries. This access time is also of low variability, as it is in our pockets now.
Only trouble is that in terms of competitive advantage, the Internet is available to all. The best you can do is to learn how to use it slightly more effectively.
But in terms of the Slashdot headline, "You Can't Get Smarter," I disagree -- we've all gotten a lot smarter.

If your home has two bathrooms, you are living above the average in prosperity. Most apartments and smaller single houses have one bathroom.
