So this parent is complaining that Al Gore should not impact what is taught at school because he is not a schoolteacher.
1. Is the parent a school teacher? If not...pot? Meet kettle.
2. As far as I'm aware, grade school/high school teachers don't come up with the knowledge that is taught in classrooms...they teach it. I'm guessing virtually everything taught in school should be barred by this person's "logic".
3. What is with people wanting unscientific, religious/metaphysical subject matter being taught alongside science in schools? If somebody wants to believe Earth is 14,000 years old, well, okay; but there's no reason to subject children to that kind of nonsense.
Well said. I'd like to note that I didn't intend to single out Sony; to some degree demand will exceed supply during console launches, although it seems Sony's case last year was particularly bad.
The very idea of constraining supply to positively manipulate demand seems stupid, although it probably works (have we had the opportunity to see what happens when a major console ships with supply left over?). I mean, in theory, wouldn't you want Gadget Y whether it is selling out or not? Is this tactic employed with other kinds of products? Doesn't a sell out like the PS3's make the parent company seem incompetent? Are people really so blind to this sort of deception? It reminds me of a recent Penny Arcade strip:
"Does that shit actually work on people?"
"It doesn't not work."
I've only got a basic understanding of statistics, but I believe this folk wisdom is an unfair comment. Statistics are an excellent tool to summarize data and make predictive statements, but they're only as good as the data put into them. Only people can lie.
I say this as somebody who grew up loving TNG...yes, Star Trek has definitely run its course. For now. It probably should have gone away around the turn of the century (as in the 21st century).
However, over the decades, Star Trek has had many memorable themes, characters, settings, etc. If the IP holders would be willing to consider not turning a profit on Star Trek in the short term (and that's a big if), I believe, one or two decades down the line, an entirely new Star Trek series that drew on the best and brightest ideas throughout "Trek history" could possibly prove financially and artistically viable.
Has anyone else thought of the sexual implications of the wii technology? In terms of sex games with devices attached to sexual organs and such. Or am I the only one with a perverted mind...???
This touches on a remark I was going to make regarding the grandparent.
OS-X should be a major draw for Apple customers. In my opinion, it's a top-shelf OS that makes Windows XP seem crude.
With that said, I'd love to see some stats on how many people buy an Apple product (computers especially) because of the "pretty" factor; I'm certain there are people drawn to Apple computers on looks alone, unaware they are different from a "normal" (read: Windows) computer.
Why don't we get USEFUL numbers. Sony launches a console, Microsoft has a console that's been out for a year. Why do we expect Microsoft's console to sell as many?
This is an excellent question, and I can only assume the answer is one of two things:
1. For some reason, gaming site users have an insatiable appetite for fuel to the "console war" fire, perhaps with little regard for the accuracy of said fuel.
2. See #1.
Imagine what the world might accomplish if the energy we put into worrying about which console was teh winnar was put into, oh, say, discussing what operating system sucks the mostest.
I bet there's a disparaging joke in there, but I'm sure there must be some people out there who want to rootkit -- er, root -- for Sony's new console. In the name of fairness, wii all should give the P$3 the benefit of the DRM^H^H^H doubt, despite the large price tag and dubious overall entertainment value... to say nothing of Sony's utter contempt for the consumer...
P$3? Oh, yeah, I forgot, only Sony is in the video game business to make money. The other corporations wish to entertain us because it makes their shareholders warm and fuzzy. Give me a break! Or was the point that Sony's console costs too much money? Then
don't buy it
!
Yeah, Sony has done some bad stuff. Microsoft does bad stuff. I'm sure if we dig deep enough, we'll find a case for Nintendo doing bad stuff (although, to be fair, likely not on the same level). So what? Are you so passionate about making sure that people don't buy the game console you hate that you need to make this off-topic comment? And on top of that, what has Nintendo done for you personally that causes you to become their unpaid billboard? It's highly unlikely you've gotten your hands on either product yet. If you put your faith, trust and energy in a corporation, you'll most certainly find it misplaced down the road.
Can anybody think of another type of product that people campout to buy? To me this seems like a game console sort of phenomenon, which I find rather odd.
Personally, I recall my experience with Lik Sang's customer service as awful. But with that said, it is unfortunate (though not surprising) that the import industry has taken such a blow.
What is this..."logic" you speak of? We don't care about what makes good business sense, we just want any excuse to bitch about how Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo are teh suk. Don't ask me why, because I haven't figured that part out yet.
Next month, nVidia will release the 7777 Lucky Seven Fever GTX-EXR-Type S-Twin Turbo. It can transform into a fighter jet, power zord, or GPU. I might be able to afford the card itself, but I'm going to ask my parents to co-sign a loan for me so I can afford a new PSU to power it. I'll post my 3dMark score ASAP!

Consoles being massively under-supplied at launch!
Oh, come on. As if you've never had to bitch-slap a Furby.

Dude, you just said a Zelda game sucks. Goodbye, karma.
Yes.

I am thinking, my friend, that you chose the wrong board to use the word "Japanime".

Wow, wait until Bill O'Reilly or Jack Thompson gets a hold of that one. Thanks a lot.
This is either a major feat for mankind, or the sound of our entire race jumping the shark.
Probably something like "good luck".

Good grief people, it's just video games!

Read this thread, should study instead.

Why don't we wait and see how many of these games are good, and then make our decisions?

Imagine what the world would be like a few years from now if teh intarweb had one less console to hate.
The marketing department at nVidia called back, and the answer is a resounding yes.
I've always considered Windows itself a virtual desktop.
