The UK broadcast of Heroes is currently half way through season one so it will be a _long_ wait until I can see season two.

I don't feel too bad downloading it from newsgroups as the BBC already have the rights to broadcast Heroes season two next year and as I am unable to not pay my TV license (which goes to the BBC) I do not see anything wrong with download it and watching it. I am simply doing what the BBC is going to do next year anyway.

    Anyone else feel the same?

A simple text advert or a well designed STATIC graphic is all that is needed.

Google did it right with their text adverts. I don't mind text adverts providing they do not get in the way of the content.

However as most sites go over the top (read: get greedy) with adverts I just simply block them (as well as Flash, JavaScript and Java). Much the same as with popups back in the late 90s when they were starting to become a big problem.

I just bought a Dell Vostro 1500. I was _very_ tempted at a MacBook or MacBook Pro but neither of them suited me. I wanted a sub £1000 notebook with dedicated graphics and a 15.4" screen. The MacBook Pro may be more powerful than the Vostro I ordered but it was also more then £1000 more expensive as the MBP I customised up on Apple.com was £1978 with the 7200RPM HDD and 3 year apple care.

The Vostro I ordered was a 2.2Ghz Core2Duo, 2GB RAM (667Mhz), 160GB 7200RPM HDD, 15.4" 1440x900 screen, Nvidia 8600M GT 256MB graphics card, bluetooth, 802.11a/b/g/n, 4 year on site warrenty (I only get warranties on laptops as I find they tend to break for me :P and it was ok value at £103 for 4 years), some dodgy Dell all in one printer and a naff nylon carry back and Vista Home Premium for £847 delivered. While it might not have OS X and while its look and build might not be as good as the MacBook/MacBook Pro I cannot justify a price difference of more than £1000.

I have BioShock on the 360 and it is a seriously amazing game however I am fortunate not to have to deal with the rootkit and install limit. I would never purchase this game for the PC. I would simply wait until a cracked copy hit the net and use that instead.

Just because a game is good does not mean that you should just forget about other things that are important to you and to a lot of people the rootkit and install limitation is important.

I suggest you print out Microsoft' EULA from things such as Windows, Office, Visual Studio and the .NET Framework, highlight the paragraph stating you can't do anything to Microsoft if use of their product results in damage to your company, hardware, finances, etc. then leave it on their desk along with a cost of migrating from your LAMP environment to Windows Server/.NET

People think that because you pay for it you get support or compensation when it goes wrong but you don't. You cannot do anything, when you agree to that EULA you agree that it isn't a perfect solution, it may screw up and your business might lose billions because of it. If that happens tough luck, you c^Hshould have bought Enterprise Edition and had a clustered solution :P

Saying that I don't hate MS. For some thing Windows is fine and I am happy to use it just as I am happy to use Linux or Solaris or AIX.

At the end of the day if the company you work for wants to change to MS that is up to them, if you feel it is a bad move for the company explain why. If they still switch to MS you can always find another job if you hate it that much. Their are plenty of FOSS based companies around.

  14. I like Microsoft but ... on Microsoft Will Not Sue Over Linux Patents · · Score: 1

I will be perfectly honest. I like Microsoft. Windows, while not perfect, is pretty damn good for a lot of stuff. Sure it costs money but I am using it to make money so I see it as a moot point. Providing its costs are proportionate to what I will make from the software I don't mind paying.

Now 10 years ago Microsoft wasn't so great but then neither was Linux (or Mac for that matter) so that is a moot point, plus it is all in the past. Lets move on.

Today Windows XP is a decent, enterprise and home user OS. Server 2003 is a decent enterprise and small business server platform. Windows Vista is similar to XP in that its look is a bit dodgy but its pretty solid under the hood (or at least it will be).

HOWEVER. I really hate all this crap with patents. Everytime I see Microsoft do this I equate it to bullying. They are scared to rather than face up to their problems and realise that OSS isn't the enemy but something that can help them develop better applications and be a stepping stone for smaller businesses to step up from or down to.

They need to realise that they don't appeal to everyone, I know that is hard for them to understand but its the way it is and the sooner they realise this the better. Not realising this won't kill them (I don't much can to be honest) but it won't do them any good either.

For me everytime I see this it makes me more determined to use Linux. It is all bull and anyone who is worth employing as an SA or similar knows this and can explain why IMHO.

  19. What is your SLA? on How Would You Benchmark an IT/IS Department? · · Score: 1

First of all what is your SLA? You should measure yourself firstly against the SLA in place. If you are way out you need to figure our why and/or maybe adjust the SLA. Do you offer a standard 9x5x5 (9am to 5am 5 days a week)? You need to have a clear cut definition of what services and at what level you will supply those services. Does your company outsource code infrastructure such as core network and telephony to another company? If so how does their SLA measure up to yours? Your SLA should be lower their your suppliers for obvious reasons.

How many 9s do you provide? In all honesty anything 97% or above should be acceptable to standard office users. Along with allowed scheduled downtime during office hours (such as lunch, first or last hour of the day) it should be fine. For core services this can be difficult (such as email) however you can resolve this in many ways most of which are rather simple (although require more hardware/software).

What is your DR plan? In case of fire/flood can you get your hands on the off site backups in 24 hours? Can you have a fully operational network with all data restored in 48-72 hours? These are realistic numbers for most businesses.

Other areas you should measure yourself on are how well your support your company with new technology? Have you looked into things such as server and storage virtualization? What are your storage technologies? SAN based? What backup systems do you use? Are they the most efficient for your business? I am not saying you have to use the latest greatest but you should know about them, their pros and cons, why they are/are not suitable for your business (And money is a perfectly acceptable answer).

What are your infrastructure forecasts? Things such as storage, CPU power, accessibility (internal and external, VPN?). In 1 year how much additional storage will you require? Can your current solution support this? Will you need to purchase a new system? Can your backup solution cope with this growth? Will you need a bigger tape library? Will this effect your scheduled downtime? What about DR numbers?

Providing you can answer all these questions you can consider yourself in good shape. Don't measure yourself just on uptime. Uptime is just one part of a much bigger picture, yes it's important but there are many other bits just as important.

It is things like this that make me cautious about buying media from Sony these days. It is a shame that the companies are worsening their products with these copy protection systems to help fight piracy when all they end up doing is ruining it for the people who want to buy DVDs.

One thing that I have wondered about for a while is how many DVD rips online originate from retail DVDs? I would have thought the majority (if not all) came from pre-release copies as the DVD rips are normally several weeks (if not months) ahead of a retail DVD release.
