Except, of course, he wasn't burned at the stake for anything to do with an infinite universe or aliens... From what I can read on Wikipedia it had to do with public heresy none of which seem directly related to anything scientific. Also, the Catholic Church did not execute them, the secular authorities did, against the advice of the Church.
I'm not saying it's a particurally glorious moment in the history of the Church, but a march against science isn't what it was.
Yeah, it's the same kind of thing as Windows... Like if a user installed a remote management protocol, then left the default password on it, and then wondered why they got hacked so easily...
Not to mention this is NOT apple's software, or anything that apple sanctioned on their phone. It is from hacked phones. Sadly, this will do nothing but make Apple more sure that they should not open up the iPhone platform more.
Jim Halpert: Have you called any headhunters? Michael Scott: Any good headhunter knows that I am available. Dwight Schrute: Any really good headhunter will storm your village at sunset with overwhelming force and cut off your head with a ceremonial knife. Jim Halpert: Right, because that's what we're talking about.
Isn't the codebase for XP and Windows 2003 essentially the same? Why can't the 2003 patch be modified? I don't remember reading that the TCP/IP stack was that different in 2003.
Actually, my girlfriend worked on this project and she informs me that it's implemented in GNU/Linux. Word of mouth being what it is these days, though, I thought that I'd quote a much better article than TFA.
The service is moving 1,300 Sun Solaris midrange servers to a Hewlett-Packard Linux environment. USPS is using Novellâ(TM)s SUSE Linux on the mainframe and distributed computing platforms to forge greater interoperability between the two environments, Byrne said.
If you were convinced that you were morally right and upholding 'God's Law' would you really act suspiciously? Those who act suspicious know what they are doing is wrong.
Terrorism is a different animal all together from faking IDs and drug carrying.
You can target the iPod touch as well as the iPhone, and can develop on the iPod touch as well as the iPhone ($220 development platforms with no per-month cost).
Excluding, of course, the per-month AT&T contract.
You have some very interesting features (accelerometer, GPS, camera) which make for some particularly interesting ideas
All of which exist on other phones.
You have a large installed base thats still growing rapidly.
vs, say, J2ME, which has a huge install base that shows no signs of collapsing.
And apple takes only a 30% cut of revenue, in exchange for a nice distribution mechanism.
"Only" 30%? And they can pull the plug on your app any time they want.
All you've managed to do so far is to show that it could work, not why it's better than anything else.
Excluding, of course, the per-month AT&T contract.
Yep, last time I used my iPod Touch I had to pay AT&T. Learn to read, please. You have some good points about J2ME, but spouting off non-sense doesn't help.
"by an Earthling probe". Interesting phrase to put in there. Unless I misundertand it, it is assuming that some other intelligent life has already probed (as it were) Mercury? I don't really see a point to put that in there, except to be a bit more sensationalist.
Actually, there is another option. Mail2web has free exchange accounts which you can use with your iphone. My yahoo push was pretty hit or miss, but activesync with Mail2Web is pretty good.
On the other hand, Apple needs to get push notifications working. I'm tired of being strung along.
It sounds like a lot of you just need to be looking for new jobs. At the company I work for (a very large company), we have paid over-time after 80 hours (in a two week period), 8-5 work days, and anyone below Senior Manager isn't even allowed to have a Blackberry on the network. (You can sync using Exchange and Windows Mobile or an iPhone, but I digress). I get 26 paid vacation days a year, and standard holidays.
I've worked crazy hours for other companies, but when you realize that you are working 60+ hours a week for more money but have no time to spend it, who cares?
I get paid less here than I did at a few other organizations, but my quality of life is higher, so what does it matter?
I've also moved from more technical infrastructure work (server administration, backup, maintainence, etc), into a more business oriented role. Essentially I take business requirements and translate them into to be process models and describe the requirements of new systems. Then they are moved off-shore for development. It's a good role that is not easily outsourced, so I'd also suggest taking a look at non-technical work. It was hard for me to do at first as well, as I much rather work with computers than people, but it is rewarding:).
I think the answer is PvP, and we're already starting down that path.
The "princess" doesn't stay saved because another group of players from a rival faction doesn't want it to be so, and snatches her back. Of course, a princess doesn't really work here. How many times would a princess be saved and lost, before she decides the tower in the middle of the contested zone isn't a great idea? But in terms of villages, land, etc, it works.
EVE is pretty original in this as well, where essentially the players make the story to a large degree.
To do it without PvP would require there to a lot of company controlled NPCs or incredibly smart AI systems. Why not use paying intelligent people to fulfil those roles? Just make it fun.3
I work for a very large consulting firm >150,000 employees worldwide, and we have around 1,000 permanent IT workers. The nice thing about working in technology consulting is that for large internal initiatives we can "hire" our own consultants to work on our initiatives. With that in mind it's hard to quantify the exact number of workers in the IT department, but I'm actually surprised about how efficient the IT department runs.
BTW, we are mostly a Microsoft shop, with some Oracle and SAP, and I'm sure you can figure out what company I work for, and thus criticize me for it.
At my place of work there are two types of people at the same level, exempt and non-exempt.
Non-exempt is paid around 10% less per year, with full OT benefits. Currently, the exempt workers are working about 30% more hours than I am for 10% more pay. On the other hand, I am not asked to ever work OT so my pay is pretty constant, but it is nice working in a tech job from 8-5 constantly, and being able to come home.
On the other hand, I don't have much to do at home, so I'm considering changing workforces.
At my work (a large fortune 500 company) we use Pointsec and it works pretty well. I haven't had any problems with it, but I don't know how much it costs, etc.
I am in a similiar situation to you. I was very worried about going to the gym and didn't want the outsiders to see me. I'm an IT nerd that lives and works where others don't want to see.
I started working out in a local gym and just had to say "fuck it" if anyone judged me. They are going to judge me worse on the street that at the gym.
Since starting 5 day a week ellpytical (700 or so calories per go) and cutting my caloric intake I've dropped 30 lbs. I feel a lot better, more confident and a lot more virile. I've also noticed that I get along with women better.
I still have a long way to go (70 or so lbs) but it's getting there.
I suggest the elliptical. I was nervous at first because I had never used one, but it's extremely low impact and I can burn a lot of calories and still feel good in the morning. The treadmill hurts quite a bit. On the other hand I've dropped my 2 miles time by 4 minutes since starting working out, and I'm feeling a lot better in physical situations.
I suggest all geeks do it.
Also, if this post didn't make a lot of sense, I'm sorry. I've been out drinking with a woman! Yes, an actual woman, Slashdotters!
This reminds me of the extra 4Mb of RAM you had to purchase for the N64 to run the more advanced games. It should have come with it in the first place. I wonder if it will come bundled with the first games that require it, as they did with Starfox 64 and the rumble pack.
Either way, it'd be cool to use this so Red Steel works the way they advertised it.
When I first read it, I assumed it was going to be a data store of all possible combinations of every Lego block ever created so that all possible designs were prior art and their property.

Are you directly on Comcast or are you behind a router?
I have a WRT54G running Tomato and Comcast gives it a IPv4, and Tomato assigns IPv6 to my internal network.

Why isn't my keyboard and monitor DRM-laden? I demand a rotating 1024 bit cipher on my keyboard!
WHERE OH WHERE IS THE RIAA TO PROTECT ME?!
60khz is very low bass...for a mosquito?

When we are talking about DDR3 9 is a normal CAS latency. At the clock speeds Corsair is running 9 is a decent CAS latency.

Fun books to read at a young age. Most of it is pretty "iffy" in terms of science, etc, but a great read.
Oh, wait, that's Myspace, not Faceboook.
When I first read it, I assumed it was going to be a data store of all possible combinations of every Lego block ever created so that all possible designs were prior art and their property.
Lego needs to work on this.
Sucks to be Stephen Hawking.
