  1. Nothing new here on NSA Wages Cyberwar Against US Armed Forces Teams · · Score: 4, Informative

    I was in the AF from 1977-1981 and worked directly for the NSA when they still had some scruples. In fact, my last posting was at Fort Meade after several years in the far east.

    As a '202xxA'(Radio Communications Analyst), that focused on foreign military communications, I could have been reassigned at any time as a 202xxB (Radio Communications Security Specialist) with no retraining. The B job just meant we were testing our own weaknesses instead of exploiting those of our opponents. It is important to look inward, find your flaws, and fix them. Kind of like debugging open source code, huh?

    That's what they were doing. Good job.

    !!! This probably means that this ebuild's files must be downloaded

    * Please download jdk-1_5_0_06-linux-amd64.bin from:

    * Select the Linux AMD64 self-extracting file

  15. Restricted by executive order on NSA Wiretapping Whistleblower · · Score: 2, Informative

    It has been an awfully long time, but I was a "radio communications analyst" back in the late 70's and early 80's. Though I wore an Air Force uniform and collected my paycheck from them, everybody in my units were tasked by, and reported directly to, NSA. My first 3+ years were spent doing real-time work in the far east and the last 6 months at Fort Meade at NSA HQ. I can assure you that all of us were aware of the fact that intercepting communications involving any "United States Persons" were strictly forbidden. If we did so inadvertently, we were required to destroy all such records and file a report detailing the circumstances, though not the content.

    This was all codified in an "executive order" which was, ironically, signed by Richard Nixon. My best googling efforts have come up dry, but I'll bet someone here can find it. The definition of "United States persons" is easier to find and essentially means: a U.S. citizen located anywhere or anyone who is currently located in the U.S., regardless of citizenship. Our reporting requirements were strictly defined by exacting criteria and little was left to chance or personal judgement.

    The whistle blower sounds like the real deal to me.

  21. RTFA before you mod, please on Update on Playfair · · Score: 4, Informative

    A "cracker-program"? Hardly. Just a snippet from the sarovar response:

    PlayFair does not give the user any special facilities that Apple itself has not given the user:

    1. PlayFair requires a valid key from Apple to convert the format of music downloaded from iTunes. PlayFair cannot convert downloaded songs' formats without authorized keys.

    2. PlayFair is not a music distribution program. All PlayFair does is convert songs from one, restricted format to another, less restricted format.

    3. PlayFair is not a method for making illegal copies of iTunes songs. PlayFair by itself cannot be used to copy music to CD, distribute on a peer-to-peer (P2P) sharing network, play music or edit songs.

    4. PlayFair saves time in converting songs. The Apple iPod permits the iTunes user to make a music CD out of iTunes songs. After that the user can convert the songs in that CD to MP3 or another digital format for playing on portable, non-Apple music players. By converting iTunes songs directly to a common digital format, PlayFair shortcuts this sequence by eliminating the need to make a CD and then convert it.
    So read it and think again.

    At the time that the Linux port of WP8 was released the office-suite market for Linux was wide open. As I recall, there were few choices and none of them were very comfortable to use. Admittedly, WP fell into this category.

    Corel could have learned from their experience and pursued a vigorous development stategy, but instead they waffled on the issue and here they are trying to find a niche to fill. Fighting for market share against MS Office on Windows is an uphill battle at best, and now OpenOffice has a firm foothold on Linux and will run on almost any platform.

    They had their chance and blew it, so I guess 'Too Little Too Late' sums it up nicely.
