  1. Re:Gentoo Is a good learning tool on New Gentoo 2007.0 Release Gets Mixed Review · · Score: 1

everyone touts Gentoo for its ability to teach, and I'll agree that users will get a stronger understanding of what is under the hood than if they use a binary based distribution, but I'd have to say that Slackware is the best learning tool next to straight up Linux From Scratch. All three (Gentoo, Slackware, and LFS) have their strengths and teach users in their own way about different things, but I think that creating my own personal Slackbuild Scripts to create Slackware packages is what makes Slackware the best for learning. My move to Gentoo was for the sole purpose of me not wanting to be my own personal package manager anymore.

I haven't run in to a broken system yet with this issue myself, but I'd assume all you need to do is find the config file that says "Gentoo 2006.1" and change it to "Gentoo 2007.0", then emerge --sync and then emerge -uDN world. Removing blocking packages is the biggest weakness of portage that I see. As I haven't done this yet or even looked in to it, I'm just guessing at the steps, so I'm sure some one else has more/better info on this.

while I appreciate a good gui install, and the previous 2006.1 gentoo gui install was QAB, I'd have to agree with the review that any step forward is a good step. Also agreeing with the article, the CLI install is still the way to go and even if the gui install worked flawlessly I think I'd still choose the CLI install method over it. Once everything is installed, the review finds several things they say "don't work", but that is just the nature of the "do it yourself"/"linux my way" mentality of Gentoo. Has this realease turned Gentoo in to Ubuntu? No, and thankfully it hasn't. I believe Arch might be more up your alley if that is what you are looking for.

If they are the same price, then what would the benefit of buying a box with Linux preinstalled be? One of the selling points of Linux is that it is less expensive than Windows, and the total cost of the computer should show that. If it costs the same as it does coming with Windows, then I can see more people simply buying the windows option just so they can have Windows if they want it in the future or so they could possibly sell it (not sure if that's legal or not, but wouldn't stop many I'm sure). The price difference is needed to attract customersIt would be much nicer if Dell would put the Windows, FreeDOS, and Ubuntu options right next to each other so a direct comparison could be made between the cost difference, but I think the argument about unsuspecting customers picking Linux by accident does hold some wieght. I still think a link on the side much like their "looking for windows xp?" link would be a good idea so people don't have to explicitly type in a url like dell.com/linux or dell.com/open to find these computers.

my question is: Is Dell going to advertise these Linux boxes right next to the "normal" Windows boxes on their main site? Or are they going to leave it up to the 1337 who are in the know and know that they have to go t dell.com/linux or dell.com/open to be able to purchase these?

Even if their target consumer for these inital Linux boxes are the people who already know what Linux is and are probably going to the Dell site already knowing they can get a Linux box, Dell still needs to give it some legitimacy and give it proper "advertising" on their main site. Looking at their Home & Home Office page now, they have a "Still looking for XP?" box on the right side which would be perfect for a matching "Looking for Linux?" box. Or, they could exen place the Linux option right next to the "Dimension/XPS" selection box in the main part of the page.

Either way, if the only access to the Linux page is through direct url, this is going to generate very little traffic.

i do have the cd somewhere, tho i've never used it. I've always known the 204bw to be an "updated" version of the 205bw, and I find it pretty interesting that your cd says the 205bw is a 8bit panel. Every review I've read of the 205bw online has said the only downside is that it is a 6bit panel. Tell you the truth, it doesn't bother me at all. I've always been in to digital photography and digital art and games, and this panel looks just as good as the viewsonic 19" pro series CRT that it replaced. Every once in a while I notice a color that looks like it might be off, but I also use 4 different screens at various times throughout the day, and really I just tell myself that any one of these screens could be right or could be wrong, so why sweat it.

the 204bw, i am 99% positive, is a 6bit panel. I have the 205bw and I bought it knowing full well that it was 6bit, but I didn't want to spend $100 more for the Viewsonic that was 8bit. I've been told that you can distinguish the a-si TFT/TN 6bit panel from the better 8bit panel by looking at the Viewing Angle. the a-si TFT/TN 6bit panel has a 160/160 viewing angle, while the better 8bit panel has 178/178 i believe. The funny thing is that if you go to a site like newegg.com and view all of the 20" samsung models, the majority of them say 16.7m colors while having the 160/160 viewing angle. That might not be the most scientific way of deciphering which panel is used in what monitor, but it sure does illustrate how bad the information can be.

I don't really understand why you are saying this is nonsense. Do you not think that there are actual people out there living with a cell phone as their only means of voice communication? I can tell you that as soon as I got my first cell phone in college, I never used my land line in my dorm room, ever. And once I moved in to an off campus house with my friends, we never got a land line because we all had cell phones. And, all of my fraternity brothers who lived in our fraternity house only used their cell phones and did not pay for land lines even though every room was wired for phone access. And now that I am out of college, I can tell you that the same reasons hold true for every one of my friends and me. Having a cell phone and a land line for personal use is rediculous because of the added cost and the fact that the person now has 2 phone numbers, and 1 is never going to get used. In fact, I was going to get DSL when I got my own place out of college, but then I was informed by the DSL company that it would take 2 weeks for internet access to start because I'd have to wait 1 week for the telephone to work, and then another week for the DSL to work. When I heard that, I literally told the person on the phone, "Oh, no thanks then. I'll have cable internet this weekend."

As for businesses going completely wireless, I think that will never happen, especially at my company and I'd assume other companies are the same. In my office, cell phones do not work. Period. I have a cubicle right next to a window, and I barely get reception if i leave my cell phone sitting on the sill. Also, I work in construction, and I can tell you that Nextel is huge in the industry. As such, every contractor I talk to has one and they all have crappy service. They always drop calls and I always get to hear "Please hold while the nextel subscriber is located" when I make a call to them. I can only assume that the walkie talkie aspect of the Nextel service is what attracts so many contractors to get it, as I can see that being useful for coordinating things on site.

I absolutely love that HBO has 0 ads during the show/movie I am trying to watch, and only shows them at teh start/end of a show.

I have noticed that Comcast has started adding adverts to the beginning of some on-demand content, which isn't so bad because I can hit play, then go get my drink and come back just in time for my desired content to start. I can fastforward thru, but comcast seems to take a 5 second delay between me hitting a button and it actually performing the function.

still, having a feature disabled because a company wants to force you to watch their advert is a horrible idea. Good thing I never watch Disney content OnDemand, unless they happen to own HBO.
