Just a reminder about the old joke, that in Europe, 100 miles is a long distance, and in America, 100 years is a long time.

I have nothing bad to say about all-electric cars. But a 300-mile range will not even get to my parents' houses. That's why i can't buy one.

  3. I couldn't stand my boss on Ask Slashdot: Why Did You Quit Your Last Job? · · Score: 2

I just did not get along with my manager. He made stupid decisions, he blamed me (even wrote me up) for his mistakes. My co-workers basically indicated that it's my job to get along with him, and not his job to get along with me, so that impacted my relationship with my co-workers too.

I think the final straw was that I had surgery right before my annual review was due. A week in the hospital, a week on bed rest, a week light-duty-no-driving, a week light-duty-with-driving. He asked me during my "bed rest" week to come in for my annual review. I declined. He asked if I would come in during my no-driving week, and again I declined. When he finally gave me this annual review, it had zero raise.

PostScript -- one of the co-workers I stopped getting along with over this incident -- he left six months later, citing this same manager's stupid decisions.

    IMHO, that counts.

A couple of years later, I was in college taking Freshman Physics 102. The professor was supposed to be running an experiment on the (grounded) Space Shuttle. Instead, he was teaching Freshman Physics 102. And he never let us forget that. I think the mean on the first test was around 30% before somebody got a higher-up to step in.

Not sure if you're being rhetorical, but there's an answer.

In Maryland, the county is the primary local government. There is one "independent city" (Baltimore), and a small number of "incorporated cities" that have a limited amount of "home rule", primarily zoning.

States like New York and New Jersey, you have the State, the County, the Town, and the Village, all providing different levels of services and different levels of government.

I gave up on it when they added the Sokoban levels and I switched to Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, although I'm playing that less and less these days as well in favor of Larn.
