As much as CD protection got heavier these days, I can still go to the street and find the latest games ready for 2$us. (This country is quite special, few got the broadband to download CDs, and pirated software is an street product like a hotdog or candy :)

  3. Yep, MS is behind of this on Linux Patent Infringement Lawsuit Filed Against Red Hat/Novell · · Score: 4, Interesting

It all appears MS is making up a new SCO.

A rational question is to ask "why also Novell"? Yes, we all know Novell and MS are buddies and all so this is a reason to think MS is not behind this lawsuit.

Imho what's going to happen is that Novell will be VERY collaborative and willing to accept to pay royalties for this BS patent, the game will be make Red Hat play alone. The expected aftermath (for MS-Novell) would be to make Red Hat look like a rogue company that does not respect IP. And yes, thanks to Novell the case will be much harder to solve for Red Hat than before, probably Novell will rush in making a deal so there's precedent...

Laugh at the ridiculous theory all you want, I just hope Novell does not prove me right on this one. But if they do, then I hope nobody will argue to me whose side Novell is playing for.

  15. Novell apologists read on Novell Makes Linux Driver Project a Reality · · Score: 2, Interesting

This is a threat to open source, since Novell may just add duhbious terms to the drivers' licenses. Or purpotedly add MS code to them so they are the only ones able to legally distribute them.

Some stuff before the Novell apologists come to bash me:

    • Thanks to Novell's deal, the only distro able to legally include moonlight is SUSE enterprise, you are right, not even OpenSUSE, and they say moonlight is open source, sure it is licensed open source but due to 'patent issues' only novell can distribute it, Don't believe me? It is something that both Miguel Icaza and a Novell guy called Bruce have publically accepted, hope a google
    • Novell is now actively being a predator spreading FUD and lies about other distros and faking numbers to show how their "superior windows integration" (which is null) is a competitive advantage.
    • Novell has accepted MS' proposal of effectively turning Linux into a windows program, so that people can easily migrate their Linux servers to MS' servers, they have accepted that only Linux is going to be virtualized, and 0 virtualization of windows on Linux, Yeah, this is the "open source supporter" Novell, turning Linux into a second class operating system.
    • Novell is actually the only company that will support OOXML, oddly enough not even MS would support it if it was approved as an standard, fun?
Denying that Novell's deal is a threat is like denying water is composed of Hydrogen , if you prefer Novell over Linux and open source, friging accept it, but we are growing tired of people that keep their blind Novell fanboyism and pretend they do not want to destroy Linux for their own convenience, they want to make their own propietary, MS dependent OS out of open source projects.

We can only beat this by promoting an open source operating system, in this regards Linux, and a possible GPLed OpenSolaris are required, there is not much worth in open source if you still need to pay some tax to use them (windows' licensing...)

I think that as much as the author blames ubuntu for complacency out of popularity, the things the author is complaining about are not specific to this release which kind of destroys the whole article, as if the guy didn't know the things he is complaining about are exactly the reason ubuntu is so popular.

I RTFA this is a summary:

    • Installation : "Is easy, but I want it to be hard, complicated and specific"
    • Boot: "Grub doesn't show up when there are no choices to make! OMG that's profanity"
    • Desktop: "But man, I like fedora fonts" Side note: he says icons are too small at high resolutions which is probably huge BS.
    • Add-remove: "Look, I'll complaint about a gnome feature and blame ubuntu for it"
    • Security: "After so many ages ubuntu used sudo, I'll complaint about gutsy using sudo. And I'll demonstrate how little I understand of it and how much I ignore about sudo actually making things more secure" And accessible root account makes your computer less secure, sure people could initially give administrator priviledges to everyone in the family (this is a desktop computer, damnit!) but once they learn about it is as easy to remove sudo priviledges, it is also very easy to exchange the sudo priviledges and all without really having to give someone the root password...
    • Debian: "I want ubuntu to be debian and friking restrictive ubuntu won't let me convert it into debian by adding a bunch of overcomplicated options, for some reason I think that not willing to complicate the user for no reason is 'windows thinking' and I actually think it is a bad thing because Linux must be hard and punish the user with a lot of choices even for trivial things, even though I complained before about how ubuntu offered 3 ways to install software, this is a clear contradiction but I'll include it in the article"
    • Conclussion "I'll complaint about software that is in alpha stage calling it unpolished. I'll call things that aren't new in gutsy as proof ubuntu is dropping in quality. I don't understand that ubuntu's objective is to be easy for everyone and not to be overcomplicated and flexible like the distribution I like more."
