  1. eGroupware on A Family Collaboration Server? · · Score: 1

It's a bit of a pain for a PHP newb to set up. Now that I've learned some things, it's actually fairly easy. You need a web server, PHP, and a database. It will work with a number of web and db servers. You have your choice of file storage via DAV or via db.

  2. No certifications here! on What's the Point of IT Certifications? · · Score: 1

I don't believe in certifications. I've never needed them, and I've met too many paper MCSE's. My university degree is more than enough to get the point across, and only one time in my life have I ever been denied a job for not being an MCSE.

  3. Network down with a hair dryer. Format live OS on 10 Computer Mishaps · · Score: 2, Funny

I was working tech support and talking someone through formatting a hard drive. My workstation was Windows 95. I typed subconsciously as I talked to the guy: FORMAT C: /s/q/u [enter]

    1%...2%...3%...4%...5%... OH MY GOD!!!!!!11!!!!

I slapped the reset button and amazingly, nothing bad came from it. It booted and came up just fine!

Another one, I was a net admin and I had an apartment-size fridge in my office. I got the idea to defrost the fridge using a hair dryer, since a block of ice had formed inside it. A few minutes into this, the hair dryer overloads the circuit and I flip a breaker. The breaker on which the ENTIRE SERVER ROOM was running. I sprinted around looking for it, and I found it... 45 seconds after the UPS'es drained.

  6. Wal-Mart v. RIAA on Record Labels Push for iTunes Price Hike · · Score: 2, Interesting

I for one would love to see a fight between Wal-Mart and the RIAA. The RIAA can force Apple to raise prices because Apple is comparatively small. Wal-Mart, IIRC, is selling for $0.88 / track, and Wal-Mart is the world's biggest corporation. I'd love to see a fight between those two.

Then again, we may wind up with a market flooded with cheap Chinese music.

  7. Chronological is not the only resume style on Working Around Bad Luck on the Resume? · · Score: 2, Insightful

My resume is functional rather than chronological. I don't have gaps to cover up, I just have a lot of similar experience across years and jobs. It makes no sense to restate it repeatedly. Granted, I didn't think of this myself. My wife is a professional resume writer, so I had just a bit of help.

  9. Normal humans can't install Debian on Debian Fastest-Growing Distro, Says Netcraft · · Score: 1

I'd love to try Debian but I can't install it. I'm a Windows expert and have done installs of Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, Peanut, and Turbo, but Debian's install is a) ugly text, b) gnarly. By that I mean that it asked me way too much about installing packages with which I'm not familiar, then it failed on first boot. No time for that, back to Mandrake.

  10. Soft Starbuck on New Battlestar Galactica - Worth a Series? · · Score: 1

I don't mind the Boomer and Starbuck gender changes. I liked the way the actress portrayed the character of Starbuck and the way the character was written, but the actress herself is too physically soft for me to buy as a military pilot. A device for perfect pitch will only improve one technical fundamental of music and that is A Good Thing. The human factor for self-expresion is not affected by this technology at all. The more the human can focus on self expression and let machines do the gruntwork the better!

One machine can do the work of 50 ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.
  15. IT is BIG on Lifetime Careers in IT? · · Score: 1

It's a wonder how many times this needs to be said, and people don't get it.

IT means a LOT of things. If you think you can be Tech Support for life and retire, I'd say you're nuts. I'm working for others, building my skills, earning capital, networking, and when the time comes I'll start my own business. That will be my eventual path to retirement. IT is no different from any other field in this respect. Constantly improve yourself and strive for excellence, and it will pay off.

Most considerate relatives give back of their own talents and abilities to those that give free support, and if they don't, your problem is you don't stand up for yourself.
