It's a bit of a pain for a PHP newb to set up. Now that I've learned some things, it's actually fairly easy. You need a web server, PHP, and a database. It will work with a number of web and db servers. You have your choice of file storage via DAV or via db.
I don't believe in certifications. I've never needed them, and I've met too many paper MCSE's. My university degree is more than enough to get the point across, and only one time in my life have I ever been denied a job for not being an MCSE.

I was working tech support and talking someone through formatting a hard drive. My workstation was Windows 95. I typed subconsciously as I talked to the guy: FORMAT C:/s/q/u [enter]
1%...2%...3%...4%...5%... OH MY GOD!!!!!!11!!!!
I slapped the reset button and amazingly, nothing bad came from it. It booted and came up just fine!
Another one, I was a net admin and I had an apartment-size fridge in my office. I got the idea to defrost the fridge using a hair dryer, since a block of ice had formed inside it. A few minutes into this, the hair dryer overloads the circuit and I flip a breaker. The breaker on which the ENTIRE SERVER ROOM was running. I sprinted around looking for it, and I found it... 45 seconds after the UPS'es drained.
I for one would love to see a fight between Wal-Mart and the RIAA. The RIAA can force Apple to raise prices because Apple is comparatively small. Wal-Mart, IIRC, is selling for $0.88 / track, and Wal-Mart is the world's biggest corporation. I'd love to see a fight between those two.
Then again, we may wind up with a market flooded with cheap Chinese music.
My resume is functional rather than chronological. I don't have gaps to cover up, I just have a lot of similar experience across years and jobs. It makes no sense to restate it repeatedly. Granted, I didn't think of this myself. My wife is a professional resume writer, so I had just a bit of help.
That may be true, but it costs me a lot less to flock to the next guy that says "unlimited" than it costs you to replace me as a customer. What's more, I value honesty in our relationship. A provider that limits unlimited access will only harm himself.
I'd love to try Debian but I can't install it. I'm a Windows expert and have done installs of Red Hat, Suse, Mandrake, Peanut, and Turbo, but Debian's install is a) ugly text, b) gnarly. By that I mean that it asked me way too much about installing packages with which I'm not familiar, then it failed on first boot. No time for that, back to Mandrake.
I don't mind the Boomer and Starbuck gender changes. I liked the way the actress portrayed the character of Starbuck and the way the character was written, but the actress herself is too physically soft for me to buy as a military pilot. I expected a woman with the physique of Sigourney Weaber in Alien, or at least Tasha Yar, but I can't accept Starbuck's body to have gone through military training...
I'd say you missed the better one. Article 29, Section 3: These rights and freedoms may in no case be exercised contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations.
How far would the USA have got had that been Amendment 11 back in 1786?
You can't count on that forever. The politicians who DO care and DO get it are coming, and they will find a way to control the 'net if people like us let it happen.
Would anyone claim that having better surveying, measuring, and leveling tools in construction would lead to less artistic architecture?
A device for perfect pitch will only improve one technical fundamental of music and that is A Good Thing. The human factor for self-expresion is not affected by this technology at all. The more the human can focus on self expression and let machines do the gruntwork the better!
One machine can do the work of 50 ordinary men. No machine can do the work of one extraordinary man.
It's a wonder how many times this needs to be said, and people don't get it.
IT means a LOT of things. If you think you can be Tech Support for life and retire, I'd say you're nuts. I'm working for others, building my skills, earning capital, networking, and when the time comes I'll start my own business. That will be my eventual path to retirement. IT is no different from any other field in this respect. Constantly improve yourself and strive for excellence, and it will pay off.
Honestly. Don't like it? Go start your own company, take risks, get investors, get paid US$65 million and pay to have a bobblehead doll made of yourself.
Personally, all the schwag I get that I don't like goes right to charity.
I'm becoming increasingly convinced that the only real way to know you've "made it" in modern society is when a bobblehead doll gets made of you.
Honestly. THIS from the crowd that chants "information wants to be free" and demands free MP3s, free software, free source, free speech, free beer, and even free Kevin.
Most of us are doing fairly well for ourselves. Getting some good money in doing what we most love. I would do what I do for free if I didn't have any bills to worry about.
Most considerate relatives give back of their own talents and abilities to those that give free support, and if they don't, your problem is you don't stand up for yourself.
I swear I mean all of this, it isn't a troll. However, I expect the flames to start in 3...2...1...NOW
Seems to me that if there is a legitimate law enforcement use (checking for security) that is being performed by law enforcement agents, then private citizens can do it under the same pretence. Like a neighbourhood watch.
Actually, J'Raxis, I'm doing just that with Windows XP Remote Desktop. I do it so that I can encrypt at least as far as the corporate network goes. We get monitored, so it's only a matter of time before we start getting sniffed.
All right, you want a real workable solution. I haven't verified this, but rumour has it that Brazil will allow anyone over age 21 to carry firearms.38 calibre on all domestic flights.
That's how you most effectively prevent hijacking. Allow the law abiding and self-interested citizens to outgun the hijackers and the war on air terrorism is over.
Why did these hijackers choose aircraft? Because they knew ahead of time that the group they had to keep subdued would be unarmed.
That's what we need to fix. Do we have the courage, or do I get flamed?
I remember this bit in the Princess Bride where Wesley says everyone will be wearing masks in the future because they're terribly comfortable.
How long before the camera-in-every-intersection and face recognition madness makes it fashionable to wear a mask wherever you go?

Fan not included, I take it?
(first post?)
Yeah, now just imagine a Beowulf cluster of these things!

I never completely understood why people would join the Mandrake Club when their stock is hovering around 2.50 and would be a better buy...

So that's what happened to all the missing Nazi gold!

It basically sucked onto and grabbed hold of my eye, then a blade comes out of that to slice a thin layer of the cornea.
Am I the only one that saw that line and screamed OH MY FRELLING GODS!!!!!Seems to me that if there is a legitimate law enforcement use (checking for security) that is being performed by law enforcement agents, then private citizens can do it under the same pretence. Like a neighbourhood watch.

Encrypt while you can, folks!
and get a Passport. I was about to buckle under the pressure...

No, it should be moused.
Manned : mousedI hope I got that right. If not, rats.
