"Peace will come to the world when the people have enough to eat,"
Hunger is infinite - no matter how much you have, you want more. Nobody get's 'enough'. Unless they have natural constraints or pretty good self control, people will usually get into some kind of escalating snit, usually over the vainist of issues like 'national pride', a flag, honor, or something.
Just look at how well we Americans are fed, and what our military budget is.
We wouldn't have this problem if people could readily purchase machines with $LINUX_DISTRO preinstalled. And the reason we don't see more of that is because of Microsoft's historic tendancy to punish (or at least make life difficult for) vendors that try.
a lot of porn content creators probably wouldn't care if you're at work or not.
If someone depends on the nsfw tag to protect them and then goes wading into the porn/pirate/gambling underworld at a public terminal they're likely in for a suprise.
Maybe I don't fully understand (on 5th beer while reading/typing) but I have Vista Beta RC1 (build 5600) running in vmware with SQL Express 2005 and having no problem serving simple asp applications on another vm, odbc, etc.
Billy the software mogul Had a really dorky 'box and if you ever saw it you would even say it sucked. All of the jukebox makers used to laugh and call him names They wouldn't let rich Billy in their music player games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve customers came to say, BIlly with your box so bright we got to find some gift tonight. Then how the retailers love him Accountants shouted out with glee Billy the software mogul You'll go down in history.
Those economic strides have their costs. Do you think USians would put up with 6000 coal miner deaths per year? It's not even proportional counting population and production amount. And that's just one sector. The old adage is that growth entails risk, and we just aren't willing to put up with the amount of risk it would take to grow at a competitive rate.
People could choose Macintosh or Linux, but they choose to use Windows instead.
I don't think people so much "choose" Windows so much as it has become the default choice for people who don't know what they want, just like a car dealer will try to sell their most profitable unit to the customer who doesn't know what s/he wants, whether it's the best 'fit' for the customer or not.
Well, if it "sprung ahead" instead of "falling back" at the last time change, you would have showed up at work 2 hours ahead of everybody else. That's the "Sharper Image" part.
Basically what will happen is the onus sould be put back on the students in the form of: if you want to run software package P you will have to run distro D, or one of D1 or D2 or D3 etc. That's how the PC and Windows trampeled over other better systems in their path and brought them to the forefront: the application drags everything else along.
It was amazing how the IBM PC steamrollered over everything is sight. Manufacturers almost jokingly came out with clones call the "PC Too", etc. There were cartoons of a salesman showing a new model with outragesously advanced specs of speed and storage, and all the customer would say is, "But, is it PC compatible?".

I like my women like my coffee: expensive and easily available on many street corners.
Who were we imitating..
Oh, DEC BASIC, Wordstar and Lotus 123.

Doesn't every friggin plant on earth absorb 'greenhouse gases', i.e., co2, and emits o2 ???
The misguided attempt to reduce co2 is actually a secret war on our little green friends. They hate plants!!
that's easy
we are just pawns in the global geopolitical game.

1) Take out potential business threats by any means possible.
2) Use proceeds gained to give aid and charity to people who could not be any possible threat to show world what a swell guy your are.
Life's not fair.
That's ok - but I wish it was not fair in my favor every once in a while.

Seems someone already has.

You've got to hand it to those cunning linguists at Penn State.
