  7. For those confussed on US Pennies To Be Worth Five Cents? · · Score: 1

From what I understand from the information gathered from various web sites, it's not the price of copper but the price of zinc that makes pennies expensive. According to wikipedia the US penny has a zinc core(97.6%) and is copper plated(2.4%).

A penny weighs 2.35g, roughly 2.293 of which is zinc and .056 is copper.
There is 453.59 g/pound. So, it would take 197.8 pennies to have a pound of zinc and 8099.8 pennies to have a pound of copper.

The current price of zinc is 1.6736 $/pound and copper, 2.6348 $/pound.
Which gives you ~.008 $/penny from zinc and ~.0003 $/penny from copper. So just the cost of the materials for a penny cost ~.83 cents, ~.0083 dollars.

What pushes the cost of a penny over a penny is the cost of production as that is nearly imposible to produce a penny for .17 cents.

I beg to differ! Check it out. http://www.ericharshbarger.org/lego/faq.html

    18. Which is correct as the plural of LEGO: 'Lego' or 'Legos'? Neither, actually. The word 'LEGO', when used as a noun, should only refer to the company that makes the product. Otherwise 'LEGO' is supposed to be used as an adjective. Thus, when referring to the pieces, neither 'lego' nor 'legos' is correct... rather one should say: 'LEGO bricks' or 'LEGO pieces' or whatever (using LEGO as an adjective -- and one should really capitalize all of the letters, and put the little 'circle-R' symbol after it (®)). This is all a matter of protecting the trademark of 'LEGO' for the company (using it otherwise degenerates the strength of the trademark). This is not to say that I use the word correctly 100% of the time... but that's the answer to the question (it's always fun/painful to read the near-flame-wars that start at slashdot.org over this topic... and generally, both sides are wrong).

  12. Crappy needs to be defined on Is Computer Science Still Worth It? · · Score: 5, Insightful
I'm a software engineer and currently getting my CS degree part time. Frankly there are two aspects to websites, The apperance and the backend. Not very many programmers are good at apperance, ie colors, ect. While I hate creating websites I do like writing backend components for websites(ASP, PHP). Frankly, I wouldn't even consider creating a webpage programming from the fact that it's not required to use anything other than HTLM for a webpage and still have it be well a webpage. Simply knowing HTML does NOT make you a programmer.

So if by crappy you mean design, I don't think a degree in computer science will help. If you mean crappy as in functionality, a degree in computer science might help.

  13. Not specific study on 4 Seconds Loading Time Is Maximum For Websurfers · · Score: 1
I don't think this study is really useful at all and let me explain why. First of all there isn't any definition of what "Web page to load" really means. It could be they are talking about simply starting to get data, to completely load the website, or have it load enough to be useful. Also, I don't think these people taking this survey have a good concept of time. It's amazing how you can tell someone that something takes a certain amount of time and they will completely disagree with you and when they see it actually timed they can't believe it. I find it completely BS that people say they would never visit a site again if it took longer then a set time to load. Are these people keeping track of this information writing down/timing every site they visit? I think not.

For this study to be actually useful they would have needed to have individuals visit various sites and state whether or not the loading time was acceptable. The load times for the pages would have to be cataloged within the browser without the "consumer" able to know how long it really took. Only then might we actually get some useful information.

If you have even visited the wiki for olpc you would find, "Our goal is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves." Yeah, sounds like replacement to me. And simply because I have a different view on what money should be spend on in third world countries does not negate my right to use Slashdot. Perhaps, you should read your own post and take it into consideration. So instead of starting a flame war, go up and actually intelligently discuss something for once. Have a nice day. :D

I agree with you. When I entered my freshman year into a computer science program there were probably 70+ people in my "class" but nearly every semester the amount of people was cut in half. In this particular school the number of people graduating with a CS degree each year was only about 5. This was not a super intensive school, yet the professors all knew what they were talking about and did a good job of helping students.

While, yes, you can learn a programming language that doesn't mean you can speak it. Simply knowing syntax will get you absolutely no where. A matter of point regarding my current job; While we do ask some questions to new programmers about syntax most of our questions revolve around trouble shooting and strong mental cognitive ability. We want to know how someone thinks, their ideas to solving a problem, what they do when they don't know the answer. These types of things, while they can be enhanced are not something that everyone has innately, this has been proven. Some people are right brained others are left brained. All in all you are an analytical type person or you are not. And that's not saying this is all a good programmer requires...

Anyone can learn a programming language not everyone can program effectively.

And in my opinion he really started something with the original Star wars...of course he could never do as well on later ones. But then again I don't think hardcore fans really gave him a chance. George was also involved with Indiana Jones, while he didn't direct he was responsible for the story which was a very good one. And last time I checked writing for film is still in the industry. I'm sad to see him go, I think he still has some good stuff to offer although maybe this move works better for him. In fact for those of you who only know Lucas by Starwars should broaden your horizons.
