We do not know about Canonical because it is privat corporation and it does not need to release it's incomes.
All what we know is that Mark Shuttleworth has told that Canonical would be independent from it's own income without Shuttleworths money.
But it really can be so that when Mr. Shuttleworth stops giving money for Canonical, it dies slowly. But the free community is doing the marketing job for them, no matter what is the economical or technical status of quality.
First thing what I got to my head was "Is this licensed with CC?". Well, mayby not but this is exactly how CC has marketed itself.
All the artists of the "band" can be around the world, never meeting each other or contacting and people could mix their art and product new art from it, by same license.
Just CC by-sa (or what is the new license versions, if I remembere correctly, it is always "share alike") and you are mentioned in the credits.
Because the linux.com is now for about Linux operating system and it has nothing to do with GNU, why should users to get redirected to site what is about GNU/Linux development platform? There is no sense at all.
Linux.com should be about Linux (the monolith kernel aka operating system) and thats it mainly. Not about other things what has nothing to do with Linux. FSF can keep their own site for their political propaganda if they want.
Hopefully Linux.com comes clearly one place where you get facts about Linux and information center where you can find out what it is about. For open source and commercial purpose, but mainly for normal users too!
I hear more than usually, netbooks referred to "minilaptops". I try to use "netbook" if needed officially, but the "minilaptop" does sound nicer.
And when I searched littlebit around Internet, I found that there has always be a computer class called "Sub-notebook". And that is class where actually the "netbook" goes. You can find computers from toshiba and others, from 90's what are smaller than current netbooks sold, but ain't called netbooks but sub-notebooks. And they run Windows 95 or Windows 98 (newer models) easily.
So what happend when I first saw the Asus EeePC, that it is just resurecting the old Class, I tought they should get better name than "netbook". And for me the sub-notebook does sound better in the techinical view and "minilaptop" in daily talk.
Test had few different versions from Mozilla Firefox.
One what is compiled for Windows NT and other what was compiled for Linux.
Then on the test, intresting part is not that Windows is faster (well... it is, but not after other tests) but that Wine runs Firefox faster.
If Linux + Firefox is slower than Linux + Wine + Firefox... something is wrong between Internet Browser (Firefox) and the operating system (Linux kernel), because when using Wine, the typical system libraries and applications gets passed.
So, the real question actually is, why software between operating system (Linux kernel) and Internet Browser (Mozilla Firefox) slows down the Internet Browser so damn much?
We all know that Wine is not emulator but "swapper". And these tests proofs again that Wine can run software almost as fast as native versions on Windows systems.
As someones has already questioned speed of - as example - the GNU project glibc, the system library. Is it possible, that GNU software is actually so bloated, that Linux OS (kernel) can not run applications as fast it could? And you can swap any other software part to between Linux and Firefox, when thinkin where the problem might be.
At least what was proofed, was that Linux OS (kernel) can run Internet Browser as fast than on Windows platform, you just need Wine for that. If Linux OS would be slower, then the Wine version would be on same level too.
So what can be tought from that? Simple, problems exist all over other places than Linux OS (kernel). You just need to find it and fix it... It can be even on the Mozilla's fault, on the Firefox version, if swapping all software between Linux OS and the Mozilla Firefox does not bring more speed. If more speed is gained, then about the gained speed, problem might be on elsewhere than Mozilla Firefox and Linux OS (kernel).
So, as Linux user, I dont blame it to be slow... I blame other software top of the operating system to being slow...
So the article writter got all wrong, because he does not even know what is the OS.
Because the OS is that part of software system what manages the hardware and software and serves the hardware resources for the applications so they can serve other applications etc.
You can not get slim OS by disabling system services, because then you do not even touch the operating system itself.
Example, there is operating system called Linux. I do not know how many of you have heard it but that operating system is monolith. Many people believes that Linux is just "the kernel of the operating system" but only few smart knows that Linux kernel is THE operating system.
If you want to slimm down operating system on Ubuntu, you need to touch only to Linux. Not to MySQL, Apache or CUPS. Those are just system (software system) services and not parts of operating system.
The whole IT-world has gone grazy about marketing pushing their own "special OS" when they use Linux, because someway they need to bring them itself up. And it is not so great to say "Yes, we use Linux OS" because then other people say "Great, again a new Linux distribution". So they got marketing term "Operating System" and they hide the real information that Linux kernel is the operating system.
MS already slimmed down their NT OS on the MinWin project. They got it to under 50 megabytes. Linux takes only a few megabytes if even that... I can have whole software system, with graphical desktop and firefox browser running on it with slashdot. Just under 20 megabytes. When I start abiword and I type few sheet letter, it takes under 25 megabytes.
And still I am using one and the same OS than Ubuntu users, The Linux, but I just dont have same system services running as they do. I do not use Gnome desktop environment but simple windowmanager.
If the article writer does not even know what is the operating system, the whole article is meaningless and only marketing hype about Ubuntu and Windows seven. Without anykind techinical point or facts, even whole article relays for them!!!
They should give them to you if they offer the application for all from web and you download it from their repositories.
They should offer the sources same way as they do the binary itself. From online. If they would only deliver them trough laptop selling, then you need to have the laptop and you get sources free by some way what you do not need to pay too much extra, like CD-ROM on the Mail.
LoL... Thats why Open Source software is developed that third parties can take the code and improve it how they need (and idea is that they share it back).
Gnome, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, E-17 and multiple windowmanagers there, does not give best UI for every situation. I hope that Microsoft would understand this and actually build a desktop that can be replaced by normal user, without nerds helping. Just clickin "Install this UI" button and logout and back and you would have different UI.
I just use konqueror from KDE desktop environment. I do not need AdBlock Plus, NoScript. I just use Internet sites as they were meant to be used when World Wide Web was designed... (unless they designed those pop-ups and other things, what I still do not see).
I use Konqueror and only webpage what brings pop-up is bt-torrent or similar site what you can access from eztv dot it site when downloading a torrent. I was watching what my friend was doing on my computer when I notices fullscreen pop-up.
Those are very annoying on these days when I do not see them at all. I do not like to use Opera or Mozilla Firefox, but still konqueror manages to remove all unwated pop-ups.
I had now that adimpact site on tab and suddenly something popped up... but it was just a notification from konsole that it has got silence... so wrong alarm. Still nothing from that site... I think they are soon out of business...
Ah.. that is just like on the Mandriva on the metapackage part. You just "urpmi meta-printing" or "urpmi meta-webserver" or "urpmi meta-smartphone" and you get what you want. (not exactly with those names but you get the point).
Altough that Mandriva Linux is still bretty big system what you get when you install it.
But there are few Linux distributions what are under 100Mb. One is about 50Mb and one is even just 24Mb. Those includes only Linux operating system (the kernel), few system libraries from GNU and X-server with somekind small windowmanager.
I just ran my P1 133Mhz with 144MB ram DSL (Damn Small Linux) and whole system toke only 12,3 Mb RAM when booted to desktop. And when running Firefox, it takes only 24,7MB with one page (example slashdot... hey, what else you need?).
This kind small system is what Microsoft should bring out. You get minimal OS with just needed system libraries (C, C# etc) and then somekind very light windowmanager and then you just say "install DirectX", "Install gameplatform" or "Install HTPC-system" and then you would get minimal software system for that task.
Windows NT OS is not big, as you can remember the minWin project made NT to take less than 50MB ram with light HTTP server. So it would be possible.
Linux can do it, why not Windows? (yeah, it is just marketing like Microsoft is dealing with Intell and NVIDIA).
What? why not just "su" and give the damn root password.
sudo passwd
What? When you are logged in as root, you do not need sudo to change password.
Is this somekind "Ubuntu" logic that you need to run everything as sudo? For Ubuntu users the sudo command seems to often to mean "run".
"run apt-get update" or "run apt-get install name"
Ubuntu users do not even understand the problems of sudo what Canonical has mde because it use sudo as root replacement and not as why sudo was designed in first place.
The UAC was build just to allow users to run non-administrator account.
Earlier than Windows Vista, you ran your system as administrator that you could use your computer.
On *nix systems (different Linux-distributions, BSD-distributions, Mac OS X etc) you were by default a normal user.
All applications were designed to work as normal user. On Windows-systems, you did not need to know anything about admin user situation.
Now on Vista, you got UAC what allows (or it should if first user would not be again a admin, even on the Windows 7!) user to be a normal user. Because all software makers need to make applications work like on *nix systems, work for normal users without needing a IT-degree to tweak system.
With UAC, you can use normal accounts. But when needed, you can get admin rights to maintaint system, when you are tweaking something what is outside of your user rights. What shouldn't happen often!
On *nix systems (I use Linux OS) like Mandriva, I need root password only a 1-2 times a month. When I install new software. All system updates goes by my password. On Windows 7, I need to click more often "Allow" button every day. And now I need to give admin password because I turned my account to normal user because it was by default a administrator. very stupid from MS. But hey, I am normal user and not administrator and I can actually use my computer that way.
Well, it is good to understand that "professional" does not mean that you are actually great or even GOOD in the job what you do. It just means that you get your paycheck from that job.
But back to the point.
I do not call anyone qualified to edit photos, videos or anykind grahic if they are doing it on their laptops on normal room, and dont ask what it is when doing it _outside_!
If you demand best results for computer hardware, you should own color profiled middle-gray room. The lighting is so dim that you can fall to sleep. Then you need to make sure that there is not anykind disturbing colors (wallapers, cellphones etc) what effect your eyes how you see colors on the screen. And you need to profile whole workflow from camera, to computer to printer/screen/press etc. Just the color profiling is hard enough.
Too many pro photographer use laptop, what is just 8bit/channel, they work on normal office with normal lighting. They might turn off few lights to get darker but then they have typicall mistakes done already on that point that you can not get 100% accurate color view.
And even that you would have 100% correct color profiled workflow (room colors, lighting, devices etc) then your client opens the image on typical computer or laptop and see the colors are wrong. Or student on press sets wrong colors adjustments because he thinks that he need to "fix" the results.
So you just end up fighting with all other things than just the monitor and how well it can present colors etc...
You get all most used web browsers on the CD/DVD disk what your internet operator gaved to you.
Or are you saying that you use Internet without Internet connection?
When Microsoft and Netscape were fighting browser wars, internet operators included Netscape and Internet Explorer browsers to same disk where was applications to set your system settings correctly for operator.
Netscape was winning then because they both were competitors, even both added nonstandard features. Microsoft was loosing badly so they used their dominating position on OS markets (Linux OS was just something 1.x version then!) and bundled the Internet Explorer to the Windows system and even integrated it to operating system in the windows system.
Then they released next Windows system version 98 and tadaa! all new Computer users were automatically IE users.... No worries about Netscape anymore. And no more need to install netscape browser from the CD disk because browser was preinstalled for the user.
To fix things, just demand removing the IE from windows system and ask internet operators to include IE, Opera, Firefox and few others to their Internet CD what you get when you get internet connection. No need to use FTP, just use the disk what came with the ADSL/Cable modem.
Oh, you do not use ADSL/Cabel modem... I see. (even the mobile phone 3G connection brings a CD with them. Internet browser would be included that too!).
btw, for what you need internet browser on your computer if you do not have internet connection? (the html-engine still can be preinstalled on system!)
Is that all what you got? When user opens the KDE4 menu, she/he see:
Web Browser (Konqueror/Firefox/Opera) Instan Messenger (kopete) Bittorrent Client (Ktorrent) Text Editor (Kwrite) Advanced Text Editor (Kate) Audio Player (Amarok) Videoplayer (Dragonplayer) Video Editor (KdenLive) Photo management (digikam) Image Editor (Krita/GIMP)..... etc.
Normal user do not need to know the application name, he just need to know what he wanted to do and he can easily find application for that TASK, not searching application by name and quessing what they do!
Only idiot demands that application name should be telling user right away what it is doing.
Application name should be unique, so that when user search it, she/he does not get n+1 different applications on the screen, but just exactly the needed one.
It is like Firefox vs Mozilla Firefox. You can find panda animals with first search but the second one will bring the Internet Browser. Should we demand that Mozilla rebrands their #1 product to "Internet Firefox" so even the stupid Windows users understands right away that it is Internet Browser just like "Internet Explorer" does mean?
I remember those bots too, they were first ones maded for the Counter-Strike mod. Then they suddnly started to be bots again when they included the ultimate skills for them, like complete 180Â turn in one millisecond. So you just ended to situation that bots killed you before you even saw them behind corner what was situation with every human player on game itself.
TA Spring RTS engine (http://spring.clan-sy.com/) has few AI's to what are made to learn from human players. They just actually collect information about units, abilities etc. And then positions on the map where they got killed and then they avoid or attack more agressive to that position. So very limited AI but sometimes nice opponent for single player.
Hopefully people would start developing good open source AI's for different games, so every game developer would not need to build everything from scratch. We could end up to AI's designed for RPG, FPS, RTS and simulations etc games. Design them to use plugins, so you can import wanted features from other areas AI's and configure it work correctly on different situations. Then somekidn nice player recorder what would calculate the human player movement and adapt it.
Marketing? Who needs marketing when technical tests and facts speaks truth itself... Linux is better OS than NT and any distribution gives more possibilities than one of the Windows Vista Editions for daily computer use. You get more applications preinstalled on your system when you take one of the common distribution than Windows Vista Ultimate even has.
I dont count PC games as daily computer use, not because the Linux sucks on that area because it does not have so many games, but because people has game consoles and most computers are not used to play games, but for work and multimedia.
And I dont count special applications like AutoCAD for daily computer user neither, because I dont know anyone else than few guys (architecs) who use it on work, they dont even have those applications on their own laptops. So I separete corporation and personal laptops.
Only two things is needed, 1) Windows (and Mac OS X) users stops the talking of Linux OS and it's distributions (systems) if they have not used them in daily purposes in last 6 months over few weeks.
2) Consultant would do their real job, not just promoting Microsoft systems everywhere just because they get more money from it. They would actually learn the Linux OS possibilities (from supercomputers to watch) and how the Linux systems actually work.
The youtube and actuall Linux users does the job if done correctly. And we do not need Ubuntu fanboys to promote their own system over others, because they happend to spread false information so easily about Linux and other it's distributions.
And I dont care about if Canonical is finally independent company. Because there is Mandriva, Novell, Red Hat and many others who already has done that. So Canonical is even behind them.... so this article was nothing more than just marketing for Canonical and Ubuntu. Just what Ubuntu people can only do... promote their own system over others.
Actually, that could help US snipers to actually shoot the correct targets. You can get photos of target to iPod to show you next your scope. And after kill or before you get captured, you could delete all the information from device. No papers left to investigate etc.
What actually scares me because snipers (sorry, US millitary wants that own snipers are called as "sharpshooters" because it does not have such bad sound than snipers, and it should tell people at home that own boys/girls are really accurate shooters.) should be smart enough so they can work alone behind enemy lines. They should not relay anykind electronic devices. It is important that they can calculate math in their head, without needing a electronic device. Most important information should be given them how to operate even when they would be week away from connection to other units. Best snipers does not even use the scope, because it can give your position away, get broken etc. And still you should be able to kill a target with headshot from 800m without scope. Even WWII snipers could do this... with normal rifles.
If snipers now needs/gets a iPod to be included in their gears, I say they do not deserve the definition Sniper/Sharpshooter. They are just christmas tree of the battlefield.

Or you can have plasmoid on your toolbar or on your desktop, what looks like a switch and clickin it turns 3D effects OFF or ON. Very simple and nice.
it should be said that a compiler, just like the operating system, is an absolutely essential component to any development platform.
There, fixed for you!
Is that all what you got?
When user opens the KDE4 menu, she/he see:
Web Browser (Konqueror/Firefox/Opera) .....
Instan Messenger (kopete)
Bittorrent Client (Ktorrent)
Text Editor (Kwrite)
Advanced Text Editor (Kate)
Audio Player (Amarok)
Videoplayer (Dragonplayer)
Video Editor (KdenLive)
Photo management (digikam)
Image Editor (Krita/GIMP)
