His comment was not nice, but you could have avoided it by not calling yourself a physicist without further explanation ("high-school physicist"?). But to answer your question, diagonalization was a mathematical technique that Georg Cantor used to show that the set of all real (rational + irrational) numbers is larger than the set of all counting numbers, even though they are both infinite. They are different "levels" of infinity. I think you can get it if you read this: http://www.mathpages.com/home/kmath371.htm

If you can get a sample size of 10 that is representative of a population of 60,000,000 people, you'll have a pretty accurate survey. The reality is, that's not possible in most cases.

No, it's not possible in *any* case. If you have a sample of ten people out of a sixty million, and they are *representative* of the sixty million, you *did not* get them by randomly selecting them. You knew about the population to begin with, and chose your sample very carefully to "represent" it, and it will still be a coarse measure. The sampling standard deviation is proportional to the square root of the sample size. No way around that.

Just read a couple of news stories recently about two young ladies in th UK who separately won the lottery. One invested and made wise choices, but the other, as happens often with lottery winners, blew her millions quickly and has little to show for it, and as I understand it, is not very happy now.
