It would be a bonus, but seeing as TiVo offers the service and the Cable companies would have to pay TiVo subsidies, how likely is it that we'll see this any day soon? TiVo could in itself build a cable service branch out of itself offering the service and cornering the market. Wouldn't it be sweeet :)

  13. A Case for self defense? on Fight Virus With Virus? · · Score: 1

I am not a lawyer, so please take what I say with a grain of salt (Maybe more).

If your local machine were to have the equivalent of a self defense mechanism, that responded only to direct attacks by other machines, that's one thing. With such a system your machine is limited to warning the attacking system before using minimal resources to defend itself.

On the other hand, if your machine is actively seeking to modify an attacking system, by patching it, destroying it or otherwise, one would say you've gone beyond self defense and are an active participant in malicious intentions.

Causing another machine to patch be patched and then to still attack another system simply to patch it up, seems like a grand idea, but the root problem remains, and you've simply added to it. Legally, I believe, this would be called an ilegal act (remember grain of salt).

I don't believe it. Why does this seem like a threat to me? "Should the user fail to comply, we will attack him with SPAM upon SPAM upon SPAM". I feel less threatened by my statement, than I do by AOL.

  18. Comparable to the Porn Industry on MP3.com Summit - The Music Revolution is Over · · Score: 1

Ironic how we all seem to have forgotten what happened to the porn industry just a few short years ago.

I remember the days where porn was easily available on the net (not to say that it probably still is). The laws came about and porn websites were required to verify your age (or should I be PC and say "do some verification"). In time such verification made the use of Credit cards and hey why not charge for the service in the process. That industry has certainly not shrunk, in fact it's grown exponentially.

The fact of the matter, whether we approve of it or not, is that we as human beings want the best deal we can get legally. If music online exists with cost, people will purchase it. Do note that illegal avenues will always persist (It's a fact of life).

The question that needs to be asked is this; why would I pay for a subscription service that gives me something for a month that I can no longer use after that month should I not continue to pay for it? If I buy a CD, that CD is mine for life or until harm comes to it.

Microsoft has had so much flak from us, that they've profitted from the bad press. Now that the criticism has slowed down, they are creating their own havoc with things like this licensing model that in the end they'll be the key to their own doom.

  22. The Law is is right, but are ACME the enforcers? on Using GPS To Catch Speeders Found Illegal · · Score: 1

The Law should not be broken, but ACME don't have a right to enforce the law. As a matter of responsibility, they should have called up the police to indicate where the offender was, had him ticketed for speeding by the police. Through this system they would have had a legal recorded recourse to fine the driver for speeding at least once. Greed took the better of them, enabling them to fine the driver for three speeding offenses recorded by the GPS. Anyone calling them a safety conscience company has to take their actions into account as not being very safety conscience, but rather, very greedy.
