hmmm, all i got out of that was macs are better than pc because they look cooler, have up-to-date wifi cards, and good tech support. Well, the Nintendo Wii looks pretty cool, has an up-to-date wifi card, and I can't even remember a time i need Nintendo's tech support. Screw laptops, buy a Wii! And as an added bonus, you can play games on it without Bootcamping to Windows!
Very good point. Personally, i'd just like to try it out, but i don't need anything offered at any of the current list of stores. I do like the the idea of my credit card only being in one site rather than the slew of sites i order from.
I worked on the computer sales floor before best buy implimented Geek Squad. I went to the initial training and such. So I did have a glimpse of what Geek Squad used to be. I'd have to say, it's horrible what has happened to such a good company. A computer technician should not be graded on how well he sells more products to his client but by the level of expertise and repairs he does. I've seen my store hire people into Geek Squad not because of their computer knowledge but because of their selling ability.
Well, i work at best buy ( i know i know, it pays the bills) last time i checked, most of best buy's services centers are third party. I personally know that the one located in Atlanta is HORRIBLE! My laptop had a loose plug for the power. I knew it was just a simple soldering job, but i was to busy at the time with school to work on it myself. Had them send it out. I got it back and the power cord worked fine, but my case had been put back together half-a**ed and had big gaps in the seams and the keyboard didn't work. We've also had other problems of ipods coming back and the case wasn't even put back together. If you for some reason take sometime to best buy to get fix, DON"T let them send it to Atlanta.
I currently work at Best Buy and have had this question asked of me before. First off, i don't know much about linux. I'd dabbled with it a few times and can do what i need to with it, but i'm more comfortable with windows right now. Anyways, i didn't know the answer to this this question. (Nobody keeps a running count of what hardware is or isn't linux compatible) BUT instead of making some crap up, or even just saying "i don't know", i actually looked up the products right there in front of the customer until I found one that was linux compatible.
It all depends on where you go. I would have to agree that most people at retail stores don't know that much in the technical area. I currently work in the Camera area and i know more than most of the our store's Geek Squad about computers. It's exactly right when you say that these retail stores don't pay enough to people that actually know what they're doing.
I just recently bought a 50" HDTV (yes i'm one of those single geeks with money to blow). I bought one of the HD-DVD players the other day too. I have to say, horrible experience. I ran into a big problem, I haven't upgraded my eyeglasses to accept the HD format yet. I was at the eye doctor the other day and he said that my current lenses only gave me 20/20 vision. I need 1080p/1080p vision to see the HD-DVDs. So i went to check out some glasses, picked up a pair i liked but they only supported Blu Ray. Finally found a good HD-DVD compatible pair of eyeglasses and the frames were $500 more than my old 20/20 glasses!! $2000 TV + $500 HD-DVD player + $700 HD-DVD glasses to watch HD content = slightly better looking picture! Definitely worth it! Now my tv looks better than real life!
I work in an electronics retail store and have notice many people still are confused with the differences between CDs and DVDs....or maybe it's just the part of Ohio that live in:)
One downside to you settop box as opposed to DVD/HD-DVD/Etc, you can only watch those movies at home. What do you do if you're going to a friend's house, roadtrips, anywhere but home? Don't get me wrong, i love your idea. Much easier to hit a few buttons and *bam* my movie is playing. But there will ALWAYS be a demand a universal portable media. One you can play anywhere and others around you can also play. Unless of course if we ever get high bandwidth, long range wireless:)
Has anyone made a mass multiplayer first person shooter? If not, they should. Think of battlefield 2 but instead a large map, a large continent...
First company to do a decent job with this, has my paychecks for quite some time.
"A computer expert told KATU News there is no way to know if someone is using your wireless connection without permission."
Wow, i wouldn't call myself a computer expert, but even my old netgear POS router shows connected devices and their mac addresses. If someone's on a network for 3 straight months, you think you'd get used to seeing that mac address.
I'd have to agree too. I work at best buy (which is 5 minutes away), and i'm 5 minutes from CompUSA, and Circuit City. Microcenter is about 30 minutes away and worth the trip when i have the time. Great selection and relatively knowledgable employees. Prices aren't to bad either. Microcenter is my favorite of all the B&M stores.
Same thing at Best Buy. Since margin is made on accessories and service plans, it doesn't matter what computer you get, as long as you get service plans and stuff with it.
I got reamed while i was working there for simply asking the customer if they wanted a service plan. If they said no, i dropped it. That made my manager mad.
...HAD. Had a good reputation.
...or try to fix it http://www.tuaw.com/2006/06/19/exploding-shuffle/

...the US's Northeastern Power Grid problem is solved.
How many people loose "just" a bone?
does checking the weather online count?

...newegg accepted this i may actually use it.
hellz ya cuz i am 13
Can i get this for my PC? I could really use the extra time.

possibly cuz you're not 13 anymore
I'll be sure not to steal these bullets.

Brilliant!
Like most new windows OS, you wait 1 year from the original release date for it actually is released. Then you wait another year for them to fix it.
I was in Japan a year ago and ran into a drink call "Calpis" I was disappointed when it didn't taste like cattle urine in the least.
